文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要了介绍四种居家节能环保的实用方法。

1 . Eco-Friendly Changes You Can Make to Your Home

As part of the move to save the environment and money, many people have made lots of changes to their homes over the past few years, and the trend (趋势) is set to continue in the years ahead.     1     .

Switch out your light bulbs (灯泡)

You might not think that this could make a big difference.     2    . With LED light bulbs being up to75% more efficient than standard light bulbs, it could save about. $7.75 per month to light your home if you made the switch to LED.

Turn to solar energy (太阳能)

Rising energy costs are forcing people to look for new methods of powering their homes.       3    . It’s also a clean, renewable energy source, meaning not only is it cheaper for you, but environmentally-friendly to power your home.

    4     ?

Wind power is more stable than solar, and it can be used to produce power. Like solar options (选择;选项) , using wind means that it won’t matter as you’ll have a continuous power source of your own.

One very low-cost option to help your home be more efficient is to stop the air from leaving your home. If you have gaps around doors and windows, the air from your air conditioning system will be heading literally straight outside.     5

A.Is wind power an option
B.The sun is one resource that isn’t going away
C.Is it a challenge to take advantage of wind power
D.So make the most of your air conditioning system
E.We’ve listed a few options to make your home more eco-friendly

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍撒哈拉沙尘席卷西班牙大部分国境,并探寻其原因。

6 . Over the last two days, much of Spain has been coated with dust (灰尘) , and the skies have turned bright orange. A huge cloud of dust from the Sahara Desert is causing the strange weather. The dust cloud is expected to spread to other parts of Europe.

Across much of Spain on Tuesday morning, a thin layer (层) of red dust coated everything outside. From streets to sidewalks to balconies, everything was covered with a layer of dust. As the sun rose, the dust in the air turned the skies in some cities a strange orange. The cause of the dust and unusual sky colour wasn’t a forest fire, but dust from the Sahara Desert.

Every year, a large cloud of dust rises from the Sahara Desert. It’s called the Saharan Air Layer. Usually, it crosses the Atlantic Ocean as part of a natural cycle that helps develop farmland and beaches in Central and South America.

But sometimes, depending on the weather, the layer of dust gets forced to the north. Large sandstorms in northern Africa lift sand and dust into the air, where it gets blown towards Spain. Though the particles (微粒) in the air come from sand, they’re much more like dust than sand at a beach.

These kinds of storms aren’t unknown in Spain. In fact, it has a special name. It’s called a “calima”. This calima is so large that it can be seen from space. A NASA scientist who studies weather in the atmosphere says it’s like a river of dust in the air. That river of dust has met with a river of wet air driven by strong winds.

Spain’s weather service described the dust storm as being “very intense (强烈) ”. At one point on Tuesday, the air quality in Madrid was the worst in the world. Government health experts warned people not to go outside without a mask, and to keep their windows and doors closed at home.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了中国选手徐诗晓在退役多年后,经过不懈努力与搭档孙梦雅夺得2021年东京奥运会女子500米双人划艇金牌。

7 . On Aug 7, Xu Shixiao and her partner, Sun Mengya, won gold in the first women’s canoe (划艇) double 500 m event at the Tokyo Games. It was also the first Olympic gold medal for China in the event.

Yet Xu’s journey to the Olympics was bumpy — she faced lots of difficulties.

In 2013, the news that women’s canoeing was still not an Olympic event dealt her a heavy blow. At that time, Xu’s coach suggested her either changing to another sport or retiring (退役).

It was impossible for her to change the sport at age 21. Xu gave up her career and found her first job as a saleswoman. The next year, she was promoted (晋升) as a human resources manager.

When Xu went to work as usual in a company in Nanchang, Jiangxi province, five years ago, she was surprised to get a call from her former coach, asking about her willingness to return to canoeing and compete in the Tokyo Olympic Games. Xu quickly made her decision.

“I quit my job, told my family about it and went back to training three days later. There was not much time left for me to prepare for the Olympics, “Xu recalls.” I never thought that one day I could go back to the sport. Now that I have started again, I will do my best.”

To catch the opportunity to go back to canoeing on the international level, Xu started her training —“as cruel as hell”. She began her daily exercises early morning and ended at 10: 30 p. m. Every day, she would set several detailed goals for her training. “Only when I reached all my daily goals, I would go ashore,” Xu says.

The more than two months of grueling (艰辛的) training finally paid off. Xu won two gold medals at the 13th National Games in two women’s canoe events, which meant she would be part of the national team to compete in the Tokyo Olympics.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了Helmholtz作为一名多才多艺的科学家的生平事迹。

9 . Born in Potsdam (in the Kingdom of Prussia) in 1821, Helmholtz was one of the 19th century’s most knowledgeable scientists, whose name turns up in the histories of multiple scientific fields and specialties. As a youngster, he had an interest in physics, but that seemed a financially unwise career choice. He went to medical school and studied physiology (生理学) instead, because he was drawn to others who promoted the point that physiology should be based on the principles of chemistry and physics, not the “vital forces” that had been popularly emphasized previously.

After earning his medical degree, Helmholtz served as an army surgeon before becoming professor of physiology at the University of Königsberg. During that time, he composed a groundbreaking paper on the conservation of energy, which made him a good reputation (名声) in science community. His main argument is that all science can be reduced to mechanics. It is emphasized that Newtonian mechanics and Lagrangian mechanics are mathematically equivalent (相等的), so a force can be measured by the Laplace method in terms of the energy transferred by the force or the work done by the force. All of this energy is conserved. While at Königsberg, he studied the nervous system, optics (光学) and acoustics (声学), especially with regard to the physiology of the senses. Then he moved on to the University of Bonn as professor of anatomy (解剖学) and physiology.

After some time at the University of Heidelberg, where he became interested in philosophy, in 1871 he was awarded the physics chair at the University of Berlin. At last he could focus on physics, emphasizing the importance of the principle of least action for explaining physical phenomena. He also explored the branches of Maxwell’s new theory. By this time, he was recognized as one of Germany’s premier scientists, until his death in 1894.

1. Why did Helmholtz choose to study physiology?
A.He was attracted by a different viewpoint.
B.He made the choice for economic difficulty.
C.He would like to make himself have more skills.
D.He preferred physiology to chemistry and physics.
2. What made Helmholtz popular among scientists?
A.His degree in medical science.B.His talent in chemistry and physics.
C.His achievements as an army surgeon.D.His paper on the conservation of energy.
3. What can be inferred about Helmholtz from the last paragraph?
A.He proved Maxwell’s new theory.
B.He was a famous philosopher.
C.He devoted his rest life to physical research.
D.He was a physical professor at Königsberg.
4. Which words can best describe Helmholtz?
A.Energetic and caring.B.All-round and determined.
C.Humorous and courageous.D.Knowledgeable and brave.

10 . A Reminder Bracelet (手链)

Description

The “Within Good” product line was created as a way to encourage positive thoughts and good deeds.

In one simple design concept, it is a wearable reminder to people of all backgrounds that “Within Good, There Is God”—a pure message that no matter what you are going through, you can always do good, and the spirit of love, known as God, is always within us and in the world.

Within Good is not intended to be a religious bracelet. In fact, one of the reasons why the “God” reference appears on the inside of the bracelet is because it is personal to the wearer. The company co-founders say their concept was to go back to the basics of doing good for yourself and others: “At the end of the day, God symbolizes peace, love, connectedness, purpose, and any other word that makes you feel GOOD.”

Over many months, the logo (标识) turned into a symbol represented by the double “o” in Good and interlocking with the G and D. “Within Good” is printed on the top of the bracelet and on the back is printed, “There Is God”. The rope symbolizes strength, and a strong connection between Good and God (always inside us).

Why This Is a Good Gift:
