文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,是伦敦大学学院图书馆的使用指南。
4 . 阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容完成下列各题。

My name is Clare, welcome to University College London Library. When you join the university you are given an ID card which also counts as your library card. So when you find the book you want to borrow you get your ID card, go to the reception desk and you give them the card and the book. They scan the book, put it onto your library record, the computer reads the bar code (条形码) — then you can borrow it.

To borrow a book, you need to come to the catalogue hall and get the computer screen. For example, we’re going for “book title”— if you click under “type word or phrase”— so we put in “Oliver Twist”, then click on “go” and it comes up with all the titles with Oliver Twist. So we’ll go with this one say the 1949 edition. It’ll tell you which library it’ll be in and how many copies are available, so we’ll then go and find the book.

The main problems that students have with using the library card are things like when the books haven’t been borrowed but cannot be found on the shelf. It’s likely that they’re often being used by someone in the library, so they are not on the shelf.

My advice when using the library card would be: ask others for help, either the librarians or other students. They’re more than delighted to help. So next time, don’t hesitate to ask, because we are here to help. Another good way is to come to a library tour. Most libraries will hold tours for new students within the first two weeks or so of term —make sure you come on one of the tours and they will show you where everything is and how it all works.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了关于儿童数字媒体习惯影响的不同观点。

6 . Children are starting on digital devices at ever younger ages, and opinions on the effects of children’s digital-media habits are deeply polarized (两极分化的).

Jean Twenge, a psychology professor, thinks excessive (过度的) use of the internet and social media makes children lonely and depressed and poses serious risks to their physical and particularly their mental health, sometimes to the point of driving them to suicide.

However, Daniel Kardefelt-Winther of the Innocent research office of Unicef examined various evidence and found less cause for alarm than is often suggested. Most of the studies he examined seem to show that the technology helps children stay in touch with their friends and make new ones.

The relationship between the use of digital technology and children’s mental health, broadly speaking, appears to be u-shaped. Researchers have found that moderate use is beneficial, whereas either no use at all or extreme use could be harmful.

What worries some experts more is that screens are becoming part of the middle-class armory(武器) for perpetuating (巩固) social advantage. Children from well-off homes are enrolled in private classes to learn skills like “How to be a YouTuber”, which poorer parents cannot afford.

B.Not all Children from poor homes can learn skills like “how to be a YouTuber”.

5. What is the best title for the text?

文章大意:本文是记叙文。文章讲述来自美国马里兰州的11岁小女孩阿迪·巴雷特创立慈善组织挽救大猩猩的故事。

7 . Addy Barrett, an 11-year-old girl from Maryland, the US, is a regular visitor to the zoo, and never gets tired of watching gorillas (大猩猩). “I really fell in love with these smart animals after reading a book about them,” Addy said. “I also learned they were being killed for unnecessary reasons. And I knew I needed to do something.”

Addy is now working to save her favorite animals. She has sold T-shirts and home-made cookies to raise money, and she hosts a party about the gorilla yearly.

Addy asked Meredith Bastian, a zookeeper, about the challenges that wild gorillas are facing and that many people ignore. Bastian said it’s because of habitat loss, climate change and the spread of disease. But there is also the problem of mining. “Some mines in Congo, Africa destroy gorillas’ habitats and make their living conditions worse,” Bastian told Addy.

Addy decided to start the Gorill a Heroes project. She has held fundraisers (筹款活动) hoping to start a conversation on the risks to gorillas. The animals, which are native to Central Africa, are endangered. There are fewer than 900 mountain gorillas and about 100,000 western lowland gorillas in the world. So far, Gorilla Heroes has raised more than $11,000. Addy was recently named a winner of the 2019 Gloria Barton Prize for Young Heroes for her work.
