3 . How to Keep Building Your Vocabulary
No educative process is ever the end. It is always the beginning of more education and more learning.
Read more. As an adult, you will find most of the sources of your supply of new words in books and magazines. If your aim is to have a superior vocabulary, you will have to make the time to read at least one book and several magazines every week. Not just this week and next weak — but every week.
Guess the meaning of a new word in the context. When you meet with an unfamiliar word, do not skip over it impatiently.
Set yourself a goal. If you do nothing about your vocabulary, you will learn, at most, twenty-five to fifty words in a year.
A.Get prepared in advance. |
B.Open you mind to new fields. |
C.You must be willing to learn new words. |
D.And that is the same case with vocabulary building. |
E.I have never seen a single person with a rich vocabulary who is not a bookworm. |
F.Instead, stop for a moment and read it aloud—get used to its sound and appearance. |
G.However, with a clear goal, you can learn several thousand in the same period of time. |
4 . The Memory Box is my fifth book, which begins the story with a simple image of an old lady, Jenny, celebrating her 100 birthday in the care home where she lives. However, instead of being with friends and family, she’s in the company of strangers. Jenny has outlived everybody she has ever loved and it is to her young carer, Candice, that she turns when going through her memory box. As Jenny gently touches the smooth stone, picked up off a faraway beach a lifetime ago, she realizes there is one last journey she must make. She knows it will be painful but if she can talk Candice into accompanying her, she will get through it.
As a writer, I try to keep to a writing routine (常规;惯例) similar to the common working week and am always at my desk by ten at the latest. I know this is not everybody’s idea of an early start. Then, I will go through the various writing work, followed by reading and editing what I wrote the day before. I set myself a target (目标) of 1,000 words a day and, while some days I may achieve many more than this, on other days it’s a right old slog and I can hardly pass the 200 mark.
Many moons ago, I attended a wing group. There, I got the best piece of writing advice from my teacher. She told us to employ the BOSHOK method, which stands for Bum On Seat, Hands On Keyboard. Or in my case, often, Bum On Set, Head On Knees. It basally means, just get on with it. She would always say, “The best advice I can offer to those who want to be writers is a quote from Elmore Leonard, ‘Try not to write the parts people tend to skip (跳过).’ Say it all really.”

5 . The results of a new survey have come out, uncovering young people’s thoughts on climate change (the long-term change in world weather patterns, including rising temperatures, caused by human activities).
More than 46,000 young people between the ages of 4 and 18 took part in the survey. Of them, 95% said they were worried about climate change, and 89% said that not enough was being done about it. Meanwhile, 81% said they feel as though young people aren’t being listened to. One young person, aged 14, from Bristol, who took part in the survey, said, “Children have a right to a future with a healthy, safe planet.” Another 14-year-old, from London, said, “Children have to live with the mistakes of adults, their wrongs and opinions. But as we grow up, we, as a generation, understand what is going on with the world and should have a say.”
When asked who has the biggest responsibility to do something about climate change, nearly 35% said world governments. Respondents were also asked what they’d like to see happen. Proposals included that governments should listen to young people more, and that businesses should change the way they work to be more environmentally friendly.
The survey was conducted by VotesForSchools and UNICEF UK. VotesForSchools is an organization that works to make sure young people have their voices heard. UNICEF is short for the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund. The United Nations is a group of 193 countries that work together on the challenges facing human. Both the survey and the COP26 climate change summit (峰会) took place on 31 October.

6 . About 8:15 one morning, I left for the airport to meet friends from Holland, only to discover that the plane was to be an hour late. The airport is close by, so I went home to wait.
Arriving at the house I found my dog, Clyde, in a very excited state, pushing his nose into a flowerbed near our front door then jumping back, barking (吠) all the time. I thought that perhaps he had seen a mouse among the leaves. Then suddenly he ran to the other end of flowerbed right by the front door, and began the same again—this time at a rosemary bush.
I decided to check with a stick. Do you know what I found? A snake! I was in shock! Quickly, the cobra was slithering (蜿蜒着滑行) up the steps to our front door! Two quick blows from me with the stick and it was dead. Clyde was still unsure of it and kept barking.
I just had time to put the snake in a plastic bag and leave it for the rubbish truck, before returning to the airport to greet my friends. If the plane had been on time, things might have been very different here today! Friends have told me that the cobra aims to spit in a person’s eyes in order to blind them. Clyde’s barking warned me that something was wrong and danger was near. If Clyde had not been “on guard”, the cobra could easily have got into our house. There he might have lain hidden, ready to “surprise attack” me when I wasn’t expecting it. This reminds me of the fact that anything can happen at any time so we should be always “on guard”. We cannot take life for granted, and should appreciate every day that we have.

Isabel sat carefully inserting papers into a folder. She had been at the Gateway Nature Center's office all morning and was weary of filing. She wanted desperately to work with the animals, especially the birds in the center. But her mom, who was the assistant director of the center, said Isabel was too young.
"I've been a weekend volunteer this whole school year. I know more about birds than almost anyone else here," she said to herself, recalling as evidence the extensive research she had done reading books and web sites on natural history. Then she sighed. She had never been good at speaking up for herself.
Suddenly, the quiet was shattered by Amy Jensen bursting in and letting the door slam. Isabel felt herself shrink. Amy, who had been a volunteer a bit longer than Isabel, walked around as if she were in charge of the place. "Hey, Isabel." she barked, planting a hand on Isabel's shoulder. Isabel willed herself to remain still, though she would have loved to brush Amy's hand off
Just then, Isabel's mother rushed into the room with Mr. Garza, the custodian (管理员). "The hurricane is entering the Gulf," she reported. "The Gulf Shore Preserve needs help preparing for the storm. I've got to go down there. You should be okay up here, but I need you girls to help Mr. Garza get the storm shutters down in the aviary (鸟舍). Stay inside with Mr. Garza after you get the storm shutters down." Isabel leaped to her feet, excited to have an opportunity to help the birds.
Mr. Garza and the girls worked quickly and were soon back inside, listening to the wind batter and rattle the shutters. When Mr. Garza found an emergency weather report on the computer, a concerned expression crossed his face. "A storm is heading our way," he announced. Amy's eyes widened in horror.
