5 . There is nothing quite like stepping into the shower at any time of the day. A warm shower certainly sounds more comfortable, but a number of influential people have recently said that for them, taking a freezing cold shower every morning is the best thing they have ever started to do. Take Jack Dorsey, the co-founder and CEO of Twitter, for example. He said in an interview, “Nothing has given me more mental confidence than being able to go straight from room temperature into the cold.” For us, starting the day in the freezing cold is the worst thing anyone can suggest!
Recently in Holland, 3,000 people volunteered to take part in an experiment. They were all instructed to take a warm shower every day. When they were about to finish, they were told to reduce the temperature for a 30-second burst of freezing water. Following the experiment, most of them said that the cold shower had given them a surge in energy that felt similar to drinking strong coffee. Compared with others who had not taken the cold shower, they said they were less likely to call their office and say they were sick. What’s more, 64 percent thought they would continue with the cold showers even though the experiment had come to an end.
This change in energy has been explained by Professor Andreas Michalsen from Berlin. “Cells in our skin that respond to light and heat react when coming into freezing water. These cells, called receptors, send a message to the brain which releases endorphins (内啡肽) into the bloodstream. Endorphins are chemicals that help reduce body pain or can help you feel more relaxed or full of energy.”
Cold water arouses blood flow which can reduce the itching (瘙痒) and bleeding caused by a skin condition called eczema (湿疹). Eczema can make your skin itch. This is good news for people suffering from eczema. So would you take a freezing cold shower every day?

8 . A good curriculum vitae (CV) (简历), with information about you and your qualifications and experience, will increase your chances of getting an interview for a job, but a poor CV could ruin everything before you even start. So it’s important to get it right.
Remember that your CV is only a way of getting your foot in the door, so keep it short. Most successful CVs include the following sections: profile (简介), achievements, experience, special skills (languages/ computers), education, training, and interests. Use no more than two sides of A4 paper.
Give the full story
Include related facts, not lists
List your duties, achievements, and responsibilities for each job. Use a separate section in your CV for specific skills.
Be honest
Although you want to present yourself well, don’t bend the truth.
Adapt it
Take the time to adapt your CV for each job you apply for. Research the company and use the job advertisement to decide what they are looking for.
Send a covering letter
Use this to stress information from your CV that is most related to the job you are applying for.
A.Be brief |
B.Be well-prepared |
C.Give information about your work history in order. |
D.Link your skills and experience to the requirements of each job. |
E.Otherwise, you are likely to be caught out and have your application rejected. |
F.It isn’t good practice to send your CV to an employer on its own without this. |
G.Doing some researches on companies helps you find out which one suits you best. |
9 . I’m not sure what I had in mind when I signed up to volunteer in Ghana. But Ghana seems different than the other developing countries I have encountered. Little children like to point us out to their mothers, and my hand waves back are often met with stormy silence. Perhaps the best part is that we aren’t treated like tourists: we pay the same price as the locals for our breakfast. We blend in (融入) while we stick out, a strange paradox (矛盾).
When I arrived I told the people in charge of the program to place me where there was the biggest need for help. That ended up being this 12m×10m run-down school room out in the slums (贫民区). When I entered the classroom, I found there were between 80 and 120 children under the age of 6 in it. It reminded me of overturning a rock and having hundreds of ants run loose. There was no rhyme or reason in this room: the children maintained the discipline themselves.
Within days, we had learned the names of those children who finally attended the class, al thirty or so of them. The one that impressed me most was a five-year-old girl sitting at the front row, studiously quiet. She learned everything we taught her, at a pace that took my breath away. She far outpaced any Western five-year-old I’d ever worked with and fueled my passion to keep going.
Now I look at this run-down classroom and these children in their ragged clothes, thinking of how different they are and how differently we can change their lives. Then the usual chaos attacks, I hold up a bag above my head and within ten seconds, the classroom is quiet. All the children are staring at my bag of candy and I realize maybe they’re not that different after all.

10 . Milan’s most famous mural (壁画), Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper, is hidden away on a wall of the dining hall adjoining the Basilica di Santa Maria delle Grazie. It’s a masterful psychological study and one of the world’s most iconic images.
Centuries of damage has left the mural in a fragile state despite 22 years of restoration, which was completed in 1999. Da Vinci himself is partly to blame: his experimental mix of oil and tempera (蛋彩画) was applied between 1495 and 1498, rather than within a week as is typical of fresco (湿壁画) techniques. But the most damage was caused by restorers in the 19th century, whose use of alcohol and cotton wool removed an entire layer. Yet the work’s condition does little to lessen its astonishing beauty.
You may very well kick yourself if you miss it, so book in advance or sign up for a guided city tour. English-language guided tours (€3.50 on top of the regular ticket price) take place at 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. from Tuesday to Sunday. Again, you’ll need to book ahead.
