1 . 阅读下面材料,在空白处填入1个适当的单词,或括号内单词的正确形式。

“Animals are a who, not a what,” animal advocates say. Animal rights activists, including Jane Goodall, want writers —     1     take guidance from the Associated Press Stylebook — to stop referring to an animal as “it.”

Animals are a part of some of the most important     2    (story)being told right now, but they are not always given     3     voice. We have learned much about how intelligent, social, complex and unique as individuals they are, and we know they are important. But many times, they     4    (describe)as if they are merely objects whose lives and interests don't deserve further     5    (consider)on our part.

Jane Goodall points out that when she     6    (start)her research, she was told that her findings and approaches, such as     7    (give)names to chimpanzees, were wrong. She was told that the belief that they have emotions was also     8    (correct).

“But we know that animals feel joy, pain     9     grieve; We are not separate     10     other species,” Goodall adds. We must recognize that every individual nonhuman animal is a ‘who,' not a ‘what.'

2 . Hands-on experience is still attractive to many buyers, although online ordering is popular in the UK today.

Oxford Street

London is shoppers’ paradise, and most visitors head for Oxford Street. Halfway along is Selfridges, one of the world’s first department stores where the architecture and window dressing impress even before you go in. There are at least four other major stores on this street, plus Europe’s largest music shop. In December the atmosphere is especially festive because of the Christmas lights which are always lit by a politician, a great sportsman, or a superstar.

Kensington High Street

A fashionable area for shopping is Kensington High Street. One of its department stores even has a roof garden — good for relaxing between purchases. There’s also an organic food superstore.

Borough Market

One of the oldest and best for food is probably Borough Market on the south bank of the Thames. Get off the underground at London Bridge and wander among fresh fish stands, bakeries, and fruit and vegetable sellers. You can also buy special food to take away, like cheeses, pork pies, mustard and chutney.

More places for bargains

Portobello Road on a Saturday is your best choice for jewelry or collector’s items. It’s a short walk from the subway station at Notting Hill Gate and you never know what you will find. For clothes, Camden Market is the place. It gets a little crowded at weekends, though. Convent Garden offers great experience for the simple pleasure of looking at jewelry and gifts.

4 . I opened the big steel door to the school's front office. My hands were a bit sweaty, my heart was pounding in my chest, and my throat and tongue felt tense and dry. It was the first day of school. No, not for me as a student, but rather, for me as a first time reading tutor(助教)volunteering with the Experience Corps program.

I'm so proud to be part of such a worthwhile educational organization. The Experience Corps developed a research-based, statistically proven reading improvement program which consists of fun reading games. In the games, I'd play with each child and they didn't even realize that they were actually learning and improving their reading—we were having too much fun!

"Ms. R,"(as they called me), "I read my book to my dog, Sunny, and she really liked it, too." Great! That's the idea—keep on reading to others at home to increase accuracy and fluency. "Ms. R, my mom has a baby in her belly. I'm going to be a big sister and will read to him when he comes out." That one made me feel all warm and sweet, and I told the student that she would be the best big sister ever. "Ms. R, why do you have gray hair?" I love the frankness of kids. I just laughed and told them it was better to have gray hair than no hair! We all giggled(傻笑)at that.

The students were tested throughout the year, and results showed that they were making progress in their reading. I hope I played at least a small part in their academic success. When I first volunteered to tutor, I was a bit anxious. I had no teaching experience, but I found out that you don't need any. All you need is the willingness to give of yourself and a desire to work one-on-one with these children who so desperately want to please you.

1. How did the author feel when first working as a reading tutor?
A.Curious.B.Nervous.
C.Satisfied.D.Pleased.
2. What's the main task of the author in the school?
A.Helping improve the reading program.
B.Teaching students knowledge of all the subjects.
C.Playing various outdoor games with the students.
D.Offering reading guidance under the program.
3. What's the purpose of paragraph 3?
A.To describe the pleasure of being a reading tutor.
B.To state how the Experience Corps program works.
C.To show how close the students are to the volunteer tutor.
D.To explain the difficulties and hardship of teaching.
4. In the author's view, what is the key to being a good reading tutor?
A.Experience.B.Devotion.
C.Knowledge.D.Diligence.

5 . Robots are now being employed not just for dangerous tasks, such as discovering mines or rescuing people in disasters. They are also finding application as household helps and as nursing assistants. As the number of machines increases, which are equipped with the latest artificial intelligence and take on a growing variety of specialized and everyday tasks, the question of how people see them and behave towards them becomes ever more urgent.

A team led by Sari Nijssen of Radboud University and Markus Paulus, Professor of Developmental Psychology at Ludwig-Maximilians- Universitat (LMU), have carried out a study to determine the degree to which people show concern for robots and behave toward them based on moral principles.

According to Sari Nijssen, the study set out to answer the following question: "Under what circumstances would adults be willing to sacrifice robots to save human lives?" The participants were faced with a hypothetical (假设的) moral dilemma:Would they be prepared to put a single person at risk in order to save a group of injured persons? The intended victim presented in the situations was either a humanoid robot that had been humanized (人性化的) to various degrees or a robot that was clearly recognizable as a machine.

The study suggested that the more the robot was humanized, the less likely participants were to sacrifice it. Situations that included vivid stories in which the robot was described as a merciful being or as a creature with its own understandings, experiences and thoughts, were more likely to stop the study participants from sacrificing it in the interests of anonymous (无名的) humans.

"This result indicates that our study group attached a certain moral status to the robot," says Paulus. "One possible suggestion of this finding is that attempts to humanize robots should not go too far. Such efforts could come into conflict with their intended function—to be of help to us."

1. What has become a concern about robots?
A.How to treat them in life.B.How to humanize them.
C.How to use them effectively.D.How to find more applications.
2. In the study the participants probably have to decide _______.
A.where to experience risks.B.when to sacrifice a robot.
C.which robot to work with.D.what robots should be like.
3. What can be inferred from Paulus' words?
A.Humanized robots offer less help to people.
B.Certain moral status should be attached to robots.
C.Humanizing robots too much may be improper.
D.Conflicts often happen between humans and robots.
4. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.Robots, a Must for FutureB.Robots Saved, People Take the Hit
C.Humanized Robots, a New TrendD.Humanized Robots Replace Human

9 . While a man was passing by an elephant, he suddenly stopped. The elephant was held by only a small rope. The farmer ties the rope to the elephant's front leg. No chains, no cages. The man was very confused. He wanted to know why the elephant didn't run away.

He visited the farmer and asked why the elephant just stood there and didn't run away. "Well," the farmer said, "when it was very young and much smaller, we used the same size rope to tie it. At that age, the rope was strong enough to hold it. Of course it couldn't run away. When it grew up, it still believed the rope could hold it. So it never tried to run away."

The man was very amazed. In fact, the grown-up elephant could run away at any time. But it didn't run away just because it believed it couldn't. As a result, it was stuck right there.

We have such problems in our life. Sometimes we don't think we can deal with the problems. Sometimes we fail to deal with them. It's not wise to stop struggling. See? Failure is part of learning. We should never give up the struggle.
