Fix pipes around your home.

4 . Can you imagine a world where more than half of our common plant species and a third of our known animals disappear from sight? That's the prediction suggested by new research on the impact of climate change.

An international team of researchers looked at the impact of rising temperatures on nearly 50,000 species of plants and animals. They came to the conclusion that these are to decline due to changes in their habitat. They looked at temperature and rainfall records for the habitats in which these species now live, and mapped the areas that would remain suitable for them under different weather conditions.

The scientists projected that if no significant efforts were made to limit greenhouse gas emissionss, by the year 2100 global temperatures would be 4C above pre-industrial levels. In this scenario, some 34% of animal species and 57% of plants would lose more than half of their current habitat ranges. The impact on species will be felt more heavily in some parts of the world such as the Amazon region.

Our society would be affected too, according to Dr. Rachel Warren, from the University of East Anglia in Britain. She says: "There'll be a knock-on effect for humans because these species are important for things like water and air purification, flood control and nutrients cycling, and eco-tourism."

In spite of the conclusions to this paper, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, it is not all doom and gloom. Dr Warren says: "Swift action to reduce CO₂ and other greenhouse gases can prevent the biodiversity loss by reducing the amount of global warming to 2C rather than 4 degrees." The researcher believes that this would buy time for plants and animals to adapt to the change.

If nothing is changed and the predictions of this study are confirmed, the world might look very different in a few generations.

5 . As the directorial work of comedy actress Jia Ling, the film is adapted from her 2016 sketch comedy of the same title. The film reflects on how she misses her late mother Li Huanying, who encouraged Jia to pursue her artistic dreams.

Interestingly, the way that Jia showcases her filial piety (孝心) is a bit special as she fictionalizes a time-travel story to tell her mother’s love story set in 1981.

The sudden shakeup reflects the extent to which Hi, Mom has become China’s clear favorite among the Lunar New Year offerings. Written, directed by and co-starring female filmmaker Jia Ling, Hi, Mom has received the best user review ratings by far of the seven films currently on release.

Thanks to Hi, Mom’s powerful performance to date, Jia is already China’s most commercially successful female filmmaker ever.

China’s New Year box office tends to reward titles with broad family appeal — and a little sadness rarely hurts. Hi, Mom appears to have hit all the right notes.

Hi, Mom should end up just over $400 million tonight. Where the film end up is an open question, but “above $750 million” seems to be pretty likely.

If Hi, Mom ends up above the $821 million global cume of Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman, it’ll be the biggest grossing movie ever by a solo female director.

6 . Once upon a time, 10 suns rose in the sky, drying many crops and people to death. A brave man called Hou Yi came to rescue them. He excelled at archery and shot down nine of the suns. Only one sun was left in the sky to give people light and warmth.

On hearing of his amazing achievement, people came from far and wide to admire Yi. Among his admirers was Peng Meng, whom Yi accepted as his student. Even the Immortals noticed Hou Yi.

One day, the Queen of Heaven came down to Earth. She told Yi that as a reward for his bravery, the gods would give him a medicine of immortality so that he could drink it and join them in heaven.

But Yi was married to a beautiful and kind woman, Chang'e, who he loved dearly. He wanted to be immortal, but he wanted to spend his life with her more. So he gave the medicine to his wife and asked her to hide it away.

But Peng Meng broke into Yi’s house while he was away and demanded the medicine. Chang'e couldn't fight him, but she wouldn’t allow such a man to have the medicine. She drank it herself and immediately flew into the skies.

When Hou Yi didn’t find his wife at home, he went looking for her. The night was bright with the full moon rising high above him. Yi looked up and was amazed to see a figure which looked like his wife appear in the moon.

Chang'e’s love for Hou Yi drew her towards the moon, which was the nearest place to Earth in the heavens. Upon realizing what had happened, Hou Yi brought her favorite foods, cakes, and fruit out in the moonlight to share with his wife.

On hearing this story, many people participated in bringing their offerings to the moon. This is one of the origin myths of the Moon Festival.
