5 . What I will be hosting, to be exact, is a series of meditation retreats (冥想静修) to be held this spring. During each retreat, about a hundred _________ will come here from all over the world for a period of a week to ten days to deepen their meditation practices. Some of them are _________, but many have never been to India. My role is to take care of these people during their _________ here. For most of the retreat, the participants will be in _________. 6 . Dawn Loggins didn’t have a typical senior year. Back in 2012, Loggins was waking up early to get to school to put in a before-school _________ as a janitor (清洁工).

Before the rest of her peers _________ school, Loggins was cleaning bathrooms, scrubbing floors, and _________ down the very desks she would _________ later in the day as a student. After 7 hours at school, Loggins didn’t get to _________ home to enjoy an after-school snack or downtime either._________ , she clocked back in for another two-hour time on janitorial duty.

7 . This is a true story that took place a few days ago. This woman looked _______, but she was very pretty in my eyes. I met the most beautiful woman in a shop. She wasn’t that _______ as she was 5 feet at the most. Her _______ was bent, too. She was thin and her face was _______ with black age spots from a lifetime of working in the sun. Her hair was thin and white. She was at least 80 years old and might have been over 90. She moved _______ and with great care. However, when she _______ you in the eye and spoke to you, you could see her _______ beauty shining through.

Her face was wrinkled from a very _______ life of hard work and difficulty. But it was the lines around her eyes that caught my _______. These wrinkles were deep and forever “canyons” that had been ________ by a million smiles and a lifetime of laughter.

While taking a 20-hour train ride along the edge of the Taklimakan Desert in northwestern China, I had the kind of humbling, educational, and above all else, wonderful ________ with a local that all travelers long for. A young Chinese man ________ me on the train. My ________ friend spoke virtually no English, so I happily took the ________ to practice my Chinese.

Over several hours, he would tell me about how he had ________ a two-year professional school to quickly find a job ________ highways in order to help support his family. 9 . This past summer I set out on a journey to Canada’s Arctic. When I left I was wrapped in a blanket of uncertainty and ______.

But when I first met the group members, I knew I didn’t have anything to ______. The group was amazingly ______ and I was soon part of a big family boarding on an amazing ______!

Approaching the Arctic, I was repeatedly ______ with its unusual largeness and its beauty. There I flew over vast glaciers (冰河) and stood on the frozen Arctic Ocean, ______   polar bears walk in search of seal holes, and _______ wait for a meal.

However, I also learned the pollutants carried by ocean from far away have a negative ______ on all Arctic inhabitants. And global warming has put polar bears at ______ because a warmer climate means that they have a shorter time to ______ seals on the ice.

During the journey, I talked with some ______ scientists about the ruins of homes once ______ by the ancient Thule people. I made good friends with people from different parts of world.

The Arctic is a land of incredible beauty which ______ to be preserved. I’ve learned why it is so important to ______ it. This journey has made me more determined to try to ______ that I do not leave negative or harmful footprints on either Earth or its people.

10 . At nine years old, Klynn found her first hero — a local police officer making the daily rounds in her neighborhood. She kept track of what time he would pass by and would sit by the window ______. When he came, Klynn would ______ wave to say hello and the police officer, who enjoyed the friendly ______, would wave back, smiling.

Klynn’s childhood was anything but ______. Without parents, she had to take ______ for her younger brother in a neighborhood where crimes (犯罪) often occurred. She did everything she could, even though her own ______ was declining.

The pair’s greeting became a ______, which lightened the girl’s dark world and she grew ______ to the officer, for she considered him the most reliable person in her world.

20 years later, Klynn managed to find Jeff, the officer, online. Upon seeing her childhood hero again, Klynn broke down in tears.
