But we couldn’t take her with us. So we ________ her with a garland (花环) and peace doves. We also gave her some toffees (太妃糖) and peace pamphlets (小册子). 7 . A man has been tidying up his town by weeding the pavements around where he lives during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year, I have been invited by Maki Hamanaga to help her family ________ rice in a mountainous village outside of Kyoto. It is an annual event which her entire ________ have to take part in: her brother, her aging parents, her uncle and even her grandmother.

The Hamanagas have kept their ________ harvesting that has come into existence for 400 years. After the rice is dried and cleaned, the field is turned over, and the remains of the plants are buried underground to ________ the soil.

On the day I arrived, Maki’s father ________ the bamboo poles while her brother and I walked through the muddy field and ________ the rice plants onto the poles.

The harvest was an exciting new cultural ________ for me, but I wondered how long it would last. In Japan, the population is aging. The countryside is facing population ________ as the younger generations move to the big cities like Tokyo and Osaka. I asked Maki, “What will your parents do when they get too ________ to farm?”

She gave me a shrug, and said that her brother would come home one day if he really wants to ________ the business.

10 . Social media is such a huge part of everyone’s life nowadays. It’s hard to _________ not constantly posting or sharing ideas and thoughts and opinions. I love strolling through on social media and seeing everything that my friends, family and classmates _________. I enjoy catching just a little _________ into their daily life through their pictures and written posts.

For me, however, I _________ post on my social media accounts. It’s not that I’m against it, I just don’t post about my everyday life _________ something significant happens. I don’t post too often, and that’s totally okay with me.

I don’t see any _________ other people might have in the drinks I get from Starbucks or what type of _________ I’m enjoying in the dining hall or even the pure excitement of me walking to my classes. I _________ posts for special events, meeting with friends, or scenery.
