1 . Russia's first and only police corgi(柯基犬) has announced his retirement from the force, ending his career of one of Russia's smallest officers. Officer Ryzhiy ("Ginger" in English), 9, worked with the Nizhny Novgorod transport police for seven and a half years, sniffing out illegal drugs, weapons and substances that are able or likely to cause an explosion.

Recently, the short-legged corgi made its name and became a local star after his trainers created a social media account for him last summer. He now has more than 15,000 followers. His resignation was submitted to the local Interior Ministry over the last weekend. "Now, my friends, I am a real pensioner!" reads a post announcing his retirement. The account will now update Ryzhiy's followers on "the everyday life of a retired police dog" as well as the work of his former dog colleagues. "I plan to play sports as often as I did before. And maybe I will even try to learn new things, for example, dancing," the dog's account wrote. Ryzhiy's partner, a Belgian Sheepdog named Ziger, will soon be joined by a new four-legged companion.

Ryzhiy initially joined the police force by accident. His owner, also a police officer, brought him to work one day when the traffic police didn't have enough dogs on hand. He quickly adapted to the task and earned a full-time job as a result.

Corgis are well suited to working as police sniffing dogs but are too expensive for most police budgets, said a Russian corgi trainer. As a result, it remains unlikely that Russia will see any other corgi officers joining the ranks of its police.

1. How did Ryzhiy help the police?
A.By searching for the criminals.B.By discovering prohibited things.
C.By helping keep traffic orderly.D.By protecting them from danger.
2. Who updates the posts about Ryzhiy online regularly?
A.Ryzhiy.B.Ziger.
C.The trainers.D.The police.
3. What can we infer about Ryzhiy?
A.He was probably once a pet dog.
B.He devoted his whole life to his job.
C.He had no companions while working.
D.He was highly adaptable to emergencies.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Police Corgis Are Rare in Russia
B.Corgis Are Considered the Best Police Dogs
C.A Russian Corgi Makes His Name Online
D.Russia's First Police Corgi Goes into Retirement

2 . How to Teach Respect

Respect is one of the most important, fundamental skills a child can ever learn. A sense of respect is important for succeeding in school, holding down a job, and having adult relationships.     1    . So it is parents' responsibility to teach their kids these skills.

You should set a good example to your kids. When it comes to teaching children respect, it all boils down to this. Children are easily affected by what they see.     2    . Live a kind, caring, respectful life and your children will learn that this is the way adults are expected to behave.

You should encourage activities that require sharing and cooperation. One of the reasons that respect is so important is that it's needed to form helpful friendships and relationships with others. Teach your children that respect allows them to build bridges by giving them fun opportunities to work with teammates and partners toward a mutual (共同的) goal. If they get rude, warn them.    3    .

You should control your own negative emotions. Children don't have the argumentative skills that adults do.    4    . Worse, it can teach them that it's OK to yell or threaten other people when they become frustrated. Show them that difficult situations are best conquered with a cool head.

5    . Patience is a sign of respect. It may take some children longer to learn how to behave respectfully around others. Becoming impatient with children only teaches them to become impatient people, so instead take time to explain the problem to your children.

A.You should be patient
B.If they keep it up, end the activity
C.You should read some stories about respect to your kids
D.Using your own behavior to teach your kids needs much time
E.The number one place that children learn respect is in the home
F.Losing your temper can be a scary, confusing experience for them
G.In addition, they naturally look up to their parents and imitate them

3 . All animals play. Running and rolling are ways for them to have fun. But it also seems to be how they communicate and strengthen bonds with each other.

When a dog comes up to another dog, front legs bowed or his tail high or wagging, his friend knows he wants to play. But new research shows that this play behavior is surprisingly similar when horses and dogs play.

“Up to now, most studies have focused on dog-human play due to the important implications that such studies have in understanding the special relationship we establish with our pets,” researchers from Italy wrote in the journal Behavioural Processes. “Here, we focused on social play between dogs and horses.”

To study communication among different species, Elisabetta Palagi and her colleagues from the University of Pisa found 20 YouTube videos of dogs and horses playing where their interactions lasted at least 30 seconds. They analyzed the videos, looking for specific patterns of play.

They found that while playing, both dogs and horses often had relaxed, open mouths, which is a common playful facial expression in animals. Some also copied each others' movements, like pretending to bite, playing with an object, or rolling on their backs on the ground. The team also found that the dogs and horses copied each other's facial expressions. This behavior, called rapid facial mimicry, has been seen before in dogs and sun bears, points out National Geographic. But it has never been documented between animals of different species.

“A 2000-pound horse can play with a relatively tiny dog because the two are able to communicate their intentions. It's an important study because it shows how two animals who look and behave so differently can manage to discuss how to play in a way that's comfortable for both,” Barbara Smuts, a behavioral ecologist at the University of Michigan, told National Geographic.

1. How does a dog express his intention to play?
A.By bowing his back legs.B.By crossing his legs.
C.By waving his tail high.D.By raising his head.
2. How did Palagi's team study communication among different species?
A.By referring to some books about animal species.
B.By analyzing videos of dogs playing with horses.
C.By playing with some dogs and horses separately.
D.By conducting an experiment on dogs and sun bears.
3. What does Palagi's study find?
A.Dogs like to play with horses best.
B.Dogs and horses imitate each other's actions.
C.Animals show happiness by opening their mouths.
D.Different animals have different patterns of play.
4. What's Smuts' attitude to Palagi's research?
A.Supportive.B.Doubtful.C.Opposed.D.Unconcerned.

5 . Looking for a new poetry book to read? I’ve got you! We’re going to explore some of my favorite poetry collections, which range from the traditional all the way to the totally experimental. And though they differ in terms of tone and subject matter, they’ve all got we call "good parts".

Night Sky with Exit Wounds by Ocean Vuong

It is the first poetry collection from Ocean Vuong. Vuong’s style is well-suited to the heavy subjects he pursues, particularly when he reflects on the loss of his father and his experiences as a wartime refugee. There’s a certain wonderful quality to his writing.

Lunch Poems by Frank O’Hara

If you like a conversational style, Lunch Poems might be the poetry book for you. Personal, funny, and easy, the collection perfectly shows the casual voice of Frank O’Hara, an outstanding figure of the New School Movement in last-’50s New York. As the name suggests most of the poems were written during his lunch bread at work, bringing a realistic image by the writing.

100 Selected Poems by E. E. Cummings

It’s a shame that more people don’t take E. E. Cummings seriously. Yes, his poetry is sometimes experimental. Unconcerned with "rules", Cummings tried to capture emotion in its own form.

The Complete Poems by Elizabeth Bishop

In my opinion, any kind of fantastic poetry books must include Elizabeth Bishop. Highly skilled and highly influential, Bishop was one of the most powerful voices of the 20th century. She mostly worked within traditional forms, but the forms led to surprising effects, mixing classic style with modern ones.

1. Who experienced war?
A.Frank O’Hara.B.Ocean Vuong
C.E. E. Cummings.D.Elizabeth Bishop
2. Which poetry collection reflect the real world?
A.Lunch Poems.B.100 Selected Poems
C.The Complete PoemsD.Night Sky with Exit Wounds
3. What does the author think of Elizabeth Bishop’s poetry?

7 . Just wanting a hamburger, Hembert Figueroa was surprised to learn the dollar bills in his pocket were no good at Dos Toros Taqueria in Manhanttan.

Figueroa, an ironworker, had to stand to the side, holding his hamburger, until a cashier helped him find another customer willing to pay for his meal with a card in exchange for cash. “I had money but I couldn’t pay,” he said.

Cash-free stores are causing a backlash among some activists who say the practice looks down upon people like Figueroa, who either lack bank accounts or rely on cash for many transactions(交易).

Supporters for banning cashless stores worry technology is moving too fast for the 6.5% of American households—8.4 million—that do not have a bank account.

Business owners who go cashless say they are following the lead of majority of customers who are abandoning cash payments. Retailers(零售商)are under pressure to satisfy customers with higher expectations for fast and convenient service, driven by companies like Amazon and Uber.

Leo Kremer, co-worker of Dos Toros, said the amount of cash transactions at his stores fell from about 50% a decade ago to 15% last year. Cash transactions made handling cash especially troublesome. Before going cashless, Dos Toros locations were robbed twice.

Financial experts who work with low-income people caution against making assumptions about the shopping preferences or buying power of those who rely on cash. Justine Zinkin, CEO of Neighborhood Trust Financial Partners, said the greater urgency in the digital time is finding ways to better include low-income people in the banking system, such as urging banks to offer no-fee starter accounts and encouraging banks to open branches in underserved areas.

1. What trouble was Hembert Figueroa faced with at Dos Toros Taqueria?
A.He couldn’t make a deal with cash.
B.He failed to find a cashier for help.
C.He took no money or a card with him.
D.He was caught carrying false bank notes.
2. What does the underlined word “backlash” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Heated debate.B.Warm welcome.
C.Strong disagreement.D.High expectation.
3. What did Justine Zinkin suggest according to the text?
A.Making regulations to ban cashless stores.
B.Raising the buying power of low-income people.
C.Finding ways for banks to adapt with the digital time.
D.Making banks more accessible to low-income people.
4. What’s the best title of this passage?
A.Cashless stores—a production of new technology
B.Should cashless stores be banned?
C.Cashless stores, a new form of transaction
D.Are cashless stores preferred by low-income people?

8 . Iran’s Lake Urmia was once the second-largest saltwater lake in the world, covering more than 2,000 square miles at its deepest in the 1990s. In the past two decades, the lake has dried out, decreasing at times to less than 20% of its average size.

It’s not a story of climate change, though that certainly contributed. It’s a case of water mismanagement. Researches blame water overuse and inefficiency in agriculture, new dams(大坝)and irrigation(灌溉)projects, a bridge cutting across the lake, declining rainfall and rising temperature for much of the drying out.

“For me this is a really important topic: the environmental problems in the world,” says photographer Maximilian Mann, who traveled to Iran three times. His photos are collected from all three trips.

Lake researchers say there have been encouraging signs in the past few years. This past spring, massive flooding in Iran helped the lake regain water level as well. Mann’s photos were taken before that flooding.

“The floods certainly helped and increased the water levels,” says Amir AghaKouchak, a professor at the University of California, who has studied the lake. “However, one or a series of floods won’t have a long-term influence. The main issue in the basin is that the water demand is much higher than the renewable water in the basin. If the water demand in the basin is not managed, after a while the lake will continue to dry out. And the situation remains really worrying.”

1. How does the author begin the text?’
A.By giving an example.B.By describing an event.
C.By making a comparison.D.By expressing an opinion.
2. Which of the following is a reason that contributed to the change of the lake?
A.Water overuse and inefficiency in industry.
B.Massive flooding.
C.Rising rainfall and declining temperature.
D.New dams and irrigation projects.
3. What do we know about the lake?
A.It used to be the second largest lake in the world.
B.It had 2000 miles in depth in the 1990s.
C.It is linked to a new dam by a bridge.
D.It has regained some water level in the past few years.
4. What is Amir AghaKouchak’s attitude toward the future of Iran’s Lake Urmia?
A.Pessimistic.B.Hopeful.C.Uncaring.D.Unclear.

9 . Many of us dream about getting a good job, but you can never predict for sure which questions you’ll be asked in a job interview. However, some are so commonly asked that you should expect to hear them, and more importantly, spend time preparing your responses to them instead of leaving them to chance.

1. “Why are you leaving your current job”

Interviewers ask this, because sometimes the question produces relevant information. They may learn if you were fired for poor performance, if you can’t get along with your boss or if you are actually out of job. Most interviewers won’t care too much about the details. Whatever answer you’d give, keep in mind that your answer needs to be truthful, and employers may check the facts.

2. “What salary range are you looking for”

It’s essential to prepare an answer for this question ahead of time. You need to research the market rate. Employers who ask for your salary history want to figure out how much you should be earning now. One option is to respond with your salary expectations based on reality, for example, depending on benefits.

3. “Why do you think you are good at this job”

To get an offer, you need to show not just that you’re qualified to do the job, but that you’d be good at it. That means you need to talk about “evidence” in your past that shows your success in each of the key qualifications. Get well prepared for questions like “Give me an example of a challenge you faced and how you solved it.”

4. “What are your weaknesses”

Interviewers ask this question because they want to make sure your weaknesses won’t get in the way of you doing the job well. Be prepared to honestly discuss your weak spots. What have you struggled with in the past? What have managers encouraged you to do differently? This type of answer will help you have an honest dialogue with the employer to figure out if this role is the right fit for you.

1. By asking the first question, the interviewers intend to ________.
A.get some related information about the interviewee
B.judge what kind of person the interviewee actually is
C.learn if the interviewee was fired by the boss
D.confirm whether the interviewee is honest or not
2. To get a job offer, the interviewee needs to ________.
A.be realistic and truthfulB.demand a suitable sum of money
C.give evidence of qualificationsD.tell about how you’ll do the job properly
3. Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?
A.How to cope with interviews
B.Job interviews and your careers
C.What would you do in a job interview
D.Job interview questions and answering tips

10 . An unconventional method for growing rice has been found to increase yields(产量) by 20 to 50 percent. Reports from China, India, Southeast Asia and Africa suggest that average yield increases of 20 to 50 percent are regularly being achieved by farmers adopting the "system of rice intensification(集约化)"(SRI),which needs one-tenth as many seeds and aims to stimulate the root system of plants rather than trying to increase yields in the conventional way by using improved seeds and fertilizers.

The idea of using less to gain more is seen as an important innovation(革新) for adapting farming to climate change and a way to increase yields at a time when human populations are growing fast but traditional plant breeding and genetically modified techniques have failed to increase yields more than a few percentage points, says Norman Uphoff, professor of international agriculture at Cornell.

The new way to grow rice needs only half as much water, and is proving most popular in water-stressed countries, says Tavseef Mairaj Shah, a Ph.D. researcher. "Rice growing in Kashmir largely depends on irrigation systems that draw water from the river Jhelum. But climate change is leading to drier winters, untimely rains, and warmer summers."

“SRI is a great technique, not just from the water-saving perspective but because it offers better yields and soil conditions. Different studies, both at the experimental level and farmer-participative level, have shown that SRl improves yields with less water.” Shah adds.

Some academic, the global seed industry and the international community once rejected reports of “fantastic” yields, accusing farmers of falsifying(篡改)records and researchers of carelessness and "non-science". But more than 600 articles, checked by SRI International at Cornell University, have shown benefits.

Uphoff says, “Attitudes are changing. The original hostility(敌意) has gone." However, the early opposition has resulted in comparatively little scientific research being conducted into SRI and a slow understanding by funders.

1. How does SRI increase the yields of rice?
A.By sowing more seedsB.By using improved seeds.
C.By improving its root system.D.By adopting special fertilizers.
2. Compared with the conventional method for growing rice, SRI________.
A.needs less waterB.increases labor costs
C.requires better soil conditionsD.depends on genetically modified techniques
3. What was the global seed industry's initial attitude toward reports on SRI?
A.CuriousB.Skeptical.C.ApprovingD.Uninterested.
4. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A.How to Increase Yields
B.People's Attitudes Towards SRI
C.An Innovative Means of Growing Rice
D.The Disadvantages of Conventional Plant Breeding
