2 . When Amy and Tom Smith posted a video to TikTok explaining how they would be charging their then 18-year-old daughter Mary rent, the video went spread quickly and the reaction was different.
One follower called it a “punishment”. Another said: “I don’t see anything wrong with it. It helps children learn responsibility.” While a third added: “Definitely no, that’s their home.”
Despite the mixed response, Tom was sure they’d made the right decision. “This is our way of preparing her,” he told Newsweek. “Part of becoming an adult is knowing that you have to either pay rent or you’ll have a house payment. Our hope is that by doing all this, we’re preparing her for the world.” The couple charged Mary $200 a month while renting a local apartment costs $634 a month. “If she were living separately, Mary would be making a much higher payment,” Amy added.
According to a recent survey conducted by Red-field & Wilton Strategies for Newsweek, around 57 percent of the 1,500 US adults surveyed were in favor of charging for the privilege (优惠待遇), even if their parents “do not need the money”. Only 28 percent felt that adult children should live rent-free.
Jessica Griffin, associate professor of psychiatry and pediatrics (精神病学和儿科) at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School, said, “Charging your adult child rent can be good for your long-term relationship. As well as easing any financial burdens caused by their homecoming, it sets healthy boundaries, stops your child from becoming too comfortable and gives them the added motivation to leave the home and have an independent, autonomous lifestyle,” he added.
To avoid arguments, Griffin also reminded parents to respect their adult child’s lifestyle choices.1. What is the video mentioned in paragraph 1 mainly about?
A.Healthy living habits. | B.Real estate investment. |
C.The parent-child relationship. | D.Teenagers ' mental development. |
A.To punish Mary for her misbehavior. | B.To gain more followers on TikTok. |
C.To ease household financial burdens. | D.To prepare Mary for an independent life. |
A.Charging rent did only good to the Smith’s. |
B.Charging rent promoted Mary’s growth. |
C.Mary was too comfortable living with her parents. |
D.Mary wasted a lot of money. |
A.Charge their adult child less rent. | B.Show respect for their adult child’s lifestyle. |
C.Request their adult child to move out. | D.Urge their adult child to do household chores. |
3 . With so many festivals taking place in the UK, it’s getting harder every year to decide which ones to go to—and more importantly, which ones you can actually afford.
Parklife — Heaton Park, ManchesterDates: 10th — 11th June
Headliners: The 1975, Skrillex and Aitch
Cost: From £149.50 (weekend ticket), from £84.50 (one-day ticket)
Manchester’s favourite music festival is, unsurprisingly, a favourite with the city’s large student population. The weekend usually features a top-drawer line-up with loads of acts. You can’t camp at Parklife, so you also have to factor in accommodation in Manchester.
Latitude — Henham Park, SouthwoldDates: 20th — 23rd July
Headliners: Pulp, Paolo Nutini and George Ezra
Cost: £286.45 (weekend ticket with standard camping), from £90.75 (one-day ticket)
Latitude is one of the pricier festivals out there, but the lineup normally justifies (证明……正确) the dollar. The festival will have big artists alongside its main headliners. It’s a great all-rounder festival, where you can get back to nature by camping and lake swimming before dancing to DJs until the early hours.
Wireless — Finsbury Park, LondonDates: 7th — 9th July
Headliners: Playboi Carti, Travis Scott and 50 Cent
Cost: From £248.39 (weekend ticket), from £88 (one-day ticket)
We’re still a bit upset with Wireless for cancelling the festival’s Birmingham stop, making it a London-only event. Wireless hosts the sounds of grime, hip-hop, rap and R&B in North London’s Finsbury Park. Wireless isn’t a camping festival, so you’ll have to factor in the price of London accommodation for this one.
Victorious — Southsea Seafront, PortsmouthDates: 25th — 27th August
Headliners: Jamiroquai, Kasabian and Ben Howard
Cost: £180 (weekend ticket with camping), £60 (one-day ticket)
Although it has an excellent line-up of big names, this is still a relatively little-known festival. Since there are so many big acts, it’s also a pretty cost-effective option too. Best of all, the Castle Stage is situated in front of the stunning Southsea Castle, making this one of the most picturesque festivals around.
1. What do Parklife and Wireless have in common?A.They are for students. | B.They are in London. |
C.They don’t offer campsites. | D.They are in July. |
A.Heaton Park. | B.Henham Park. | C.Finsbury Park. | D.Southsea Seafront. |
A.Parklife. | B.Latitude. | C.Wireless. | D.Victorious. |

10 . What do you feel passionate? What do you love (besides your family, children, and friends)? Our passion often leads us to our purpose in life. For example, am absolutely passionate about helping people work through blocks or barriers such as hurt, guilt, shame, and self-doubt in order to experience the freedom to be authentically who they are.
I believe when you find your passion, you will experience freedom, happiness and, ultimately, less anxiety and more peace. It sounds so simple. However, many people do not really know what they are passionate about because they have lost a sense of who they are. We have spent so much time trying to please others or creating stories about why we can’t do something. What if you could change this? How would your life be different?
Identify and write down the areas you love. Technology, gardening, helping others, inner design, leadership, finances, health, fitness, writing, photography, art, managing projects, and the list goes on.
Look at your thoughts around placing more emphasis on the area where you pursue either personally or professionally. What are you telling yourself? I’m not good enough. I don’t have the time or money. Whatever it is, work on deleting this from your thoughts and replacing them with the opposite statement.
Create more time in your calendar or research what add it information or resources you might need to integrate this more in your life. Maybe it’s getting a coach or instructor to help keep you on track, reduce your fears and work on your limiting conversations. Set goals and make them happen.
Living out your purpose may mean a different job or it may mean focusing your time differently or making your passion more of a priority in your life. We all matter and have a purpose. It’s never too late to create what you want.
This quote by Bob Proctor summarizes what this all means, “Your purpose explains what you are doing with your life. Your vision explains how you are living your purpose. Your goals enable you to realize your vision.”
1. Why does the author mention the questions in Paragraph 1?A.To introduce the topic. | B.To express his doubts. |
C.To present an argument | D.To compare different ideas. |
A.The benefit of passion. | B.The unknown about passion. |
C.The disadvantage of passion. | D.The definition of passion. |
A.To explain the purpose of action. |
B.To demonstrate the value of Bob Proctor’s book. |
C.To illustrate the process for achieving the goal. |
D.To remind the readers of the importance of passion |
A.Passion is the priority | B.Creation is never too late |
C.Passion leads to purpose | D.Success lies in anxiety reduction |
