1 . Obesity (肥胖) has become a serious problem now. According to a recent survey, teenage obesity has increased at an alarming rate across America. Teenage obesity is mainly due to the increased consumption (消耗) of junk food which contains large amounts of fat. This has exposed the teens to a 14% greater risk of having a heart attack as well as seriously high blood pressure.
Various causes of teen obesity have been claimed, the most important of which is being insufficient (不足) physical exercise on the teen’s part. It is argued that teens nowadays who lack (缺少) sufficient physical exercise topped with their unhealthy eating habits are more likely to be obese. Nowadays, a main part of the teenagers spend their spare time on the computer, television or perhaps simply playing games. This greatly limits any kind of physical activity of the teenager. According to a recent survey, around 43% of teenagers spend more than 2 hours watching television every single day.
Long time inactivity in addition to the ill eating habits has increased the incidence (发生率) of obesity in teenagers even more. However, this does not mean that teens do not do enough exercise, but the amount which they do, is certainly not sufficient as compared to their intake of fatty foods. Besides this, parents need to change the whole lifestyle of the family in order to develop a healthier lifestyle of their children.
The teenagers must also be encouraged to take part in other physical activities which require more effort; such as playing basketball, tennis, badminton, volleyball and swimming. Meanwhile, the teenagers also need to be educated on the ill effects of junk food and must be asked to avoid them as much as possible. Their diet must also be made healthier and more balanced, which will help them in losing more weight quickly. For better guidance on reducing the teen’s weight quickly, parents can always turn to a doctor.

2 . Four True Canadian Heroes
Albertine Lapensée
Born in 1898, Lapensée learned to skate on iced-over rivers. When the First World War sent men to the Western Front, a Québécois arena owner dreamed up the Eastern Ladies’ Hockey League-and Lapensée seized her opportunity. Between 1916 and 1917, she showed astonishing skill, leading the Cornwall Victorias to glory after glory. Francophone fans referred to her as “the star of stars”. She once scored 15 goals in a single game. And then, at 18, she left the spotlight.
Hussain Guisti
In 2006, Guisti and his family relocated from Winnipeg to Thompson, Manitoba — only to discover it didn’t have a mosque (清真寺). In response, Guisti started the Zubaidah Tallab Foundation and raised donations to build one. The building opened its doors in 2007. Next, the Muslim community of Inuvik, N.W.T., asked him for help. He raised $ 323,000 and in late 2010, the mosque welcomed its first worshippers.

4 . Just a few hours ago, the Italian ship Andrea Doria was sailing through thick fog toward the city of New York. Captain Piero Calamai kept watch. He knew that many other ships were nearby. He should have slowed down because of the fog but he decided not to. He wanted to arrive on time the next morning.
At about 11:00 P.M., another ship, the Stockholm, suddenly hit the Andrea Doria. It made a huge hole in the Italian ship. Some people were badly hurt. Others fell into the sea. But one girl was saved by the Stockholm.
Linda Morgan was fourteen. She lived in Spain with her mother and her little sister. She was going to visit her father in New York. She was excited about seeing her father.
Linda had loved the trip. She wanted to have dinner with the captain on the last night at sea.The captain did not sit at his table that night, though. He was busy guiding the ship through the fog. Linda did not get to talk to him.
When Linda went to bed, everything seemed fine. Her mother turned off the lights. Linda talked to her little sister. She thought about seeing her father the next morning.
What happened next was a terrible surprise. Linda woke up not knowing where she was. She was not in her bed. When she called to her family, no one answered. Both her knees were broken.
Linda had been saved by an amazing accident. When the Stockholm made a hole in the side of the Andrea Doria, it lifted Linda out of her bed. She landed on the deck (甲板) of the Stockholm instead of falling into the ocean. A sailor heard her cries and found her.

5 . When I woke up, I made myself breakfast, sat and listened to the traffic. Some of my friends asked me how I could stand living somewhere so noisy. It’s true that there’s always some kinds of noise in my neighborhood, but to me, these are the sounds of life.
It was Saturday morning, so I decided to go to the park. The taxi was the fastest way to go but I took the bus instead.
When you ride the bus, you get to see so much more of the city. It can be kind of loud on the bus, with some people talking on their phones, some people chatting with their friends, and others playing music. It’s just like the traffic’s sounds, though the noise on the bus represents people working, relaxing and living.
Once I got to the park, I picked a bench over near the play area where kids played while their parents sat nearby. I could see and hear almost everything from there. Peoplewatching is one of my favorite things to do. However, I like listening even better. The only problem is that there’s so much to see and hear in the park!
Usually, I like to close my eyes. That way, I can pay more attention to the sounds and not get distracted by what I see. With my eyes closed, I could pick out parts of two old men’s conversation. One of them was telling the other about something his grandson said. I couldn’t hear the rest, but it must be hilarious because his friend’s laugh was so loud.
When I’m old, I hope that I will also have a friend who will sit in the park with me, and who will enjoy listening to the sounds of the city as much as I do.

6 . World number one Ashleigh Barty surprised tennis on Wednesday by announcing her retirement (退役) from the sport aged just 25, saying she had realized her dreams and was “spent physically”.
Barty dropped the bombshell weeks after becoming the first home Australian Open champion in 44 years and so winning a Grand Slam (大满贯) crown on three different surfaces.
In a tearful social media video message with her close friend and former doubles partner Casey Dellacqua, Barty said she was “so ready” to call it an end after achieving her life-time goal to win Wimbledon last year.
“Success for me is knowing that I’ve given absolutely everything I can. I know how much work it takes to bring the best out of yourself,” said the three-time Grand Slam winner.
She began playing tennis as a child in the Queensland state capital Brisbane and went on to win the junior Wimbledon title as a 15-year-old in 2011.
But the expectations that came with success hurt her badly and she made a shock decision three years later to ditch (放弃) tennis for cricket, signing for Brisbane Heat in the Women’s Big Bash League.
The attraction of tennis was never far away and she returned after a season out, breaking through for her first Grand Slam triumph (胜利) at the French Open in 2019 and becoming Australia’s first women’s world number one since Evonne Cawley 50 years ago.
Barty finally won a Wimbledon crown last year before her Australian Open triumph at Melbourne Park in January, storming back from 5—1 down in the second set against American Danielle Collins.

7 . If you feel like you’re always the one who gets bitten first by mosquitoes or who gets bitten a lot more than others, do not think it’s an accident. There is science behind it. Here’s how it works.
When you breathe oxygen (O2) in and carbon dioxide (CO2) out, many blood-eating species are smart enough to use carbon dioxide as a sign that a coming meal is nearby. So your breathing is enough to draw mosquitoes to your general area.
But why do they seem to be aiming at you specifically? Well, the amount of CO2 depends partly on your metabolism (新陈代谢). So if you’ve got a naturally high metabolic rate, you’re probably breathing out more carbon dioxide than others, and you attract more mosquitoes. You’ll also raise your metabolism by getting more active. So don’t be surprised if you end up with a bite or two after a tough hike or run.
Some of the things that attract mosquitoes sound unpleasant to you because you can hardly restrain them. You have no way to change it but to blame your unique physiology for making you so delicious to mosquitoes. The science shows that mosquitoes are more attracted to people with blood type O than people with type A or B.
The bacteria that naturally live on your skin can affect how many mosquitoes you attract, too. People who naturally have more bacteria on their skin tend to attract more mosquitoes, a scientist says.
Mosquitoes also use colors to find their hosts. Specifically, mosquitoes are more attracted to people wearing dark clothes. That might sound to be the opposite of what you would expect — most insects seem to love bright colors. But mosquitoes come out when it’s dark, and generally sec dark objects better than light ones. So a white or light-colored shirt may help lead them away from you.
Mosquitoes can spread serious diseases through blood. Hope the above may help you keep safer and healthier in summer.

9 . Researchers were interested in the rock iguanas(鬣蜥) on the Exuma Islands which are often fed grapes by tourists. They were curious about how this high-sugar food might have influenced the iguanas’ health. Over the past two decades, the remote islands have seen a big increase in the number of tourists. Just 25 years ago, some of the islands had zero to 20 visitors a day. Now they receive more than 200 tourists each day.
The team collected 48 rock iguanas: 24 from islands that tourists don’t visit and 24 from islands frequently visited by tourists. They collected blood samples and found the iguanas from the islands where tourists frequently fed them had the highest glucose level. The researchers say the findings how possible health issues could affect the iguanas’ long-term survival, which leads to health concerns.
“A visitor to these islands would never doubt that the iguanas were doing fine. They are big, active, and plentiful on islands visited by tourists. These phenomena(现象) are possibly concealing internal health problems that can cause a rapid decrease in population, so we need to watch the activity closely and find out ways to deal with these problems,” said Chuck Knapp, an author of the study.
“We also hope that the finding will lead to a scientific way that also protects people who depend on tourism. Many tour operators show the wildlife to visitors, and our research can be used to inform strategies that area win-win for wildlife and tour operators,” said Knapp.
“The rock iguanas face many threats to their existence, such as loss of habitat and climate change. Many of these threats are very difficult to deal with, but controlling the influence of human activities like feeding is a simple way we can help the species,” says Falon Cartwright, the director of science and policy at Bahamas National Trust.
