文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,介绍如何在今年秋天获得锻炼的灵感。

1 . Get Inspired to Work Out This Fall

As fall approaches, a lot of people make resolutions to exercise more and improve their physical condition. However, most of the time, these objectives are quickly forgotten and daily habits are resumed.     1     Here are some ideas for maintaining your motivation to work out frequently.

Joining a sports team is one of the best methods to maintain your commitment to fitness and your motivation. Sports teams are a terrific way to stay active and to improve your health.     2     Being a member of a sports team has many bonuses, one of which is having a uniform to wear and be proud of, especially if you win any prestigious matches or competitions.

3     When trying to reduce weight, it can take a while to see any changes, but there are other things you can keep an eye on before you look in the mirror. Simple things to remember are how long it takes you to complete a 5-kilometre run, and how much weight you’re carrying when working out. You will see improvement as you perform tasks more quickly and lift larger weights.

Another option is to work with a personal trainer.     4     They will be able to assist you through the proper form of exercise to ensure that you’re doing it safely. Since they are authorities in their industry, they can guide you to the destination of your choice and are well qualified to do so.

Taking care of your body is another technique to maintain your motivation for exercise. You may improve your general health by paying more attention to your eating habits, stress, and anxiety. You are more likely to desire to work out and exercise if you take care of yourself in all facets of your life. Simple adjustments can be made, such as your diet planning.     5

A.They can give you a sense of community as well.
B.To exercise frequently, I treat it like a trip to the doctor.
C.They will do everything in their power to maintain your goal.
D.To prevent boredom, try to keep things interesting and varied.
E.If you don’t want to try a team sport, you can learn something new.
F.Only if you make the exercise a habit will you be able to do it every day.
G.If you want to exercise frequently, keep track of everything you’ve done to date.

2 . Although it has been 15 years since Katherine Quirk had an infant to feed, she remembers how it felt to struggle to find something you need for your baby.

Watching the news, the nurse manager and mom of three grew increasingly alarmed by the infant baby formula (婴儿奶粉)shortage happening across the United States. She noticed many moms putting out cries for help on the Internet, because they couldn’t find a particular brand of formula their child needs. She knew she had to do something to help.

Katherine has always been a helper. Back in 2021, she and her husband made a group web page to help senior citizens get appointments for their COVID-19 vaccine. She has seen firsthand how powerful social media can be to unite people towards a common goal, so she started a new web page for parents seeking baby formula.

The South Florida Baby Formula Info Group is a resource for parents to share pictures of the formula supply at local stores, swap and sell extra formula, and help each other get through the formula shortage. Katherine solved the discussions on the group to help parents find much needed formula.

The group now has over 900 members, all of whom are working in the Palm Beach, Florida area to support one another and keep their babies fed. “The overall vibe (氛围) is very positive,” Katherine said. “Moms help other moms. Caregivers lend a hand and offer up unused formula to a mom who has a need. Exchanges happen between parents if perhaps a sample was received that is not needed.”

Katherine displays true leadership qualities! She urges other people to start groups of their own if they see a need in their community. She acknowledges that it does take “time and effort” to run a social media web page, but says, “If it helps even one person then it’s worth it.”

1. What caught Katherine Quirk’s great concern recently?
A.Parents’ struggle to feed more babies.B.The national shortage of baby formula.
C.Some families’ increasing cost of living.D.The unqualified baby formula in America.
2. What did Katherine learn from her previous web page?
A.The suffering of senior citizens.B.The importance of setting a goal.
C.The significance of social media.D.The difference good actions made.
3. What did Katherine think of the members of Baby Formula Info Group?

C.Considerate and helpful.D.Ambitious and generous.
4. What is the best title of the text?

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了机场工作人员给出国旅客提供的一些建议。

3 . The school holidays are kicking off. But with airports and airlines still struggling to manage.    1    . Fortunately, now one airport worker has revealed some advice for passengers heading abroad.

    2

The biggest mistake passengers are still making is not having their bags ready for the security check, which can have a much more significant effect than people may realize.

“Make sure you’re not got excessive creams: liquids and gels,” the worker said, pointing out that stick deodorants and lipsticks counted as liquids.

Don’t try and chance it with bag limits

3    . Airlines have strict hand luggage rules. While it may be tempting to bring an extra bag and hope to get away with it, it’s more likely you’ll end up delaying the boarding process as bags need to be put into the hold.

Check your documents before you travel

Most countries have been easing their Covid travel rules, but plenty of destinations still have restrictions in place regarding vaccine (疫苗) requirements or Covid tests.

4    . After all, there’s not much that staff can do to help if you don’t have your paperwork in order.

Don’t arrive too early at the airport

Airlines have different rules on when you should arrive at the airport for your fight. Unfortunately with the travel chaos, there are holidaymakers showing up hours early, hoping to make the flight if there are queues. However, too many people arriving early means security and check-in queues become too long.    5    So, as is urged by Manchester Airport, you’d better arrive no earlier than three hours before departure.

A.British people are facing travel chaos
B.Check and make your luggage secure
C.Have your bag ready for security check
D.And the long queues are the usual cause of missing flights.
E.Extra luggage means you’re totally forbidden to get on board
F.So it’s important that you arrive at the airport with all the needed documents
G.Make sure you don’t have extra baggage when you’re getting onto the plane

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。本文主要介绍了森林砍伐、森林砍伐造成的影响以及如何恢复森林或减缓森林的流失。

4 . Deforestation is the purposeful clearing of forested land. Throughout history and into modern times, forests have been cut to make space for agriculture and raising animal, and to obtain wood for fuel, manufacturing, and construction.

Deforestation has greatly changed landscapes around the world. About 2,000 years ago, 80 percent of Western Europe was forested; today the figure is 34 percent. In North America, about half of the forests in the eastern part of the continent were cut down from the 1600s to the 1870s for wood and agriculture. China has lost great expanses of its forests over the past 4,000 years and now just over 20 percent of it is forested.

Today, the greatest amount of deforestation is occurring in tropical rainforest, aided by extensive road construction into regions that were once almost inaccessible. Building roads into forests makes them more accessible for exploitation. Slash-and-burn agriculture is also a big contributor. With this agricultural method, farmers burn large numbers of trees, allowing the ash to fertilize the land for crops. Tropical forests are also cleared to make way for logging, cattle ranching, and oil palm and rubber tree plantations.

Deforestation can accelerate global warming and threaten the world’s biodiversity. More immediately, the loss of trees from a forest can leave soil easy to be eroded (侵蚀). This causes the remaining plants to become more vulnerable (脆弱的) to fire as the forest changes from being a closed, wet environment to an open, dry one.

While deforestation can be permanent, this is not always the case. There have, however, been increases in the size of some forests, often, because trees in those areas were replanted. Forests can also naturally recover themselves if the land is nurtured and protected from any further timber harvesting.

Slowing the loss of forests, experts say, will require countries and communities to develop effective forest management plans. Such plans, they say, must strike a balance between environmental protection and the economic needs of human society.

1. What can be inferred about deforestation from paragraph 1 and paragraph 2?
A.It only happened in Europe, America and China in history.
B.North America has the most serious deforestation problem.
C.It is a process of people destroying forests on purpose.
D.The problem was more serious in the past than now.
2. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.The amount of deforestation in tropical rainforest.
B.The reasons for deforestation in tropical rainforest.
C.The influences of building roads on tropical rainforest.
D.The harmful farming methods used in tropical rainforest.
3. Why does deforestation make the remaining plants more vulnerable to fire?
A.Because it makes the environment dry and open.
B.Because it causes the loss of biodiversity.
C.Because it leads to warmer climate.
D.Because it pollutes the soil.
4. Where can the text be found?
A.In a history book.B.In a travel guide.
C.In a science magazine.D.In a local newspaper.

The UN recognizes the continent’s young people as critical to the success of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement, which took effect at the beginning of last year, and has called for their involvement in policy making and implementation.

The African Export-Import Bank, also known as Afreximbank, likewise called on Tuesday for an increase in intra-African trade and financing, with the continent’s young people and technology resources playing important roles.

Benedict Oramah, president and chairman of Afreximbank, said industrial revolutions seen in other countries were largely owed to a young and capable workforce.

“It is our view that the youth will be the catalytic force of the development of Africa. This asset (资本) in our hands is perhaps the greatest resource, an asset much more valuable than all the oil and mineral resources,” Oramah said in speech at the ongoing 29th Annual Meetings of Afreximbank in Cairo, Egypt.

“The African youth are beginning to make significant contributions to economic transformation across the continent,” he added.

Oramah said Africa should turn to its own resources, driving investment and development by leveraging Africa’s human capital and technological potential, in order to accelerate intra-African trade and commerce.

Young people are ready to make giant progress in a single continental market and could become the drivers of the continent’s integration and intra-African trade, Oramah said.

文章大意:本文是一篇夹叙夹议文,主要讲的是Jay等人为保护牛所做出的一些努力。

6 . Animals are gentle and often fall victim to cruelty because they trust and don’t fight back. We are so grateful to be able to save our animals and prove to them that the world can be good. Five years ago, six cows pushed through three fences and escaped from a slaughterhouse (屠宰场). However, sadly, they were finally rounded up and retuned to the slaughterhouse. Because it was national news, the community insisted they be allowed to live and even raised money for their freedom. The slaughterhouse owner agreed to release them to a sanctuary (庇护所), but no one came to get them.

Unwilling to see them die, Jay jumped on a red eye flight and got there in time to stop their slaughter. He took “The St Louis Six” to the hospital to be treated for their various wounds and infections. Later, I flew to St Louis to meet them. The minute I saw them, I knew they had a story to share with the world and that we had to help them.

In the coming months, we found a gorgeous property in St Louis and opened a Gentle Barn as home for The St Louis Six. Once scared and desperate to live, now the boys are trusting, loving, and giving hope to humans in our Cow Hug Therapy sessions where they wrap their necks around our guests who come to The Gentle Barm looking for hope.

Animals have always been my greatest teachers. They taught me whether we are trying to survive or looking for a safe home, sometimes we need to leave something behind to find a better way of life. We may be afraid of change, but only when we are brave enough to face the unknown and head out on our own can we realize our dreams!

A.The community urged him to do so.
B.Someone had already bought the cows.

文章大意:本文是应用文。文章主要介绍一些在没有父母的情况下促进孩子独立自主的方法。

8 . Gaining more independence and increasingly doing more things without parents is an important and natural part of growing up. There are lots of steps to promote self-reliance.

•Doing household chores

Kids should be able to handle age-appropriate household chores.     1    . Chores give kids a sense of responsibility and can help increase their self-confidence as they see their work makes a valuable contribution to their family.

    2

As kids get older, they naturally spend more time away from home doing things on their own. They’ll go to friends’ houses to play by themselves and work through any conflicts themselves. If your child is ready, arrange for play dates at your house and let them choose what activities they might want to suggest to their friends.

•Volunteering

For very young children, everything is naturally about their own needs and wants. When kids help others, they learn to think outside themselves.     3    . Another benefit of having kids volunteer is that your kid will be less likely to be spoiled and be more likely to be kind people as they grow.

•Organizing their own schedule

Give your child a calendar and get them into the habit of writing down important dates and appointments. As they get older, they’ll need to keep track of things like doctors’ appointments, play dates, friends’ birthday parties, games and more.     4    .

•Learning to be independent thinkers

Talk about news events over dinner or while in the car.     5    . 文章大意:本文是说明文。主要介绍了园艺可以促进心理健康。

9 . Many longtime gardeners will tell you that the garden is their happy place. In a new study, University of Florida scientists found that gardening activities lowered stress, anxiety and depression in healthy women who attended twice-a-week gardening classes. None of the study participants had gardened before.

“Previous studies have shown that gardening can help improve the mental health of people who have existing medical conditions or challenges. Our study shows that healthy people can also experience a rise in mental well-being through gardening,” said professor Charles Guy.

Thirty-two women between the ages of 26 and 49 completed the study. All were in good health. Half of the participants were assigned(指派)to gardening sessions, while the other half were assigned to art-making sessions. Both groups met twice a week for a total of eight times.

In the gardening sessions, participants learned how to compare and sow seeds, transplant different kinds of plants, and harvest and taste eatable plants. Those in the art-making sessions learned techniques such as papermaking, printmaking and drawing.

Participants completed a series of assessments measuring anxiety, depression, stress and mood.

The researchers found that the gardening and art-making groups experienced similar improvements in mental health over time, with gardeners reporting slightly less anxiety than art makers.

But why does being around plants make us feel good? The answer might be found in the important role of plants in human evolution and the rise of civilization. As a species, we may be innately attracted to plants because we depend on them for food, shelter and other means of our survival. “We believe this research shows promise for mental well-being, plants in health care and in public health. It would be great to see other researchers use our work as a basis for those kinds of studies,”Guy said. “At the end of the experiment, the majority of the participants were saying not just how much they enjoyed the sessions but also how they planned to keep gardening. ”

1. What do Charles Guy’s words in paragraph 2 suggest?
A.Their study findings differ from those of past ones.
B.Their study is based on the findings of past ones.
C.Gardening also does good to people’s physical health.
D.Gardening is suitable for all kinds of patients.
2. What can be known about the participants of the study?
A.They each did the same things every day.
B.They were all middle-aged men and women.
C.They attended an experiment that lasted about four weeks.
D.They were separated during the whole course of the experiment.
3. What did most participants think of the experiment?
A.It influenced them positively.B.Its process was a bit loo complex.
C.It was well worth doing much further.D.Its findings were beyond their expectations.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.Gardening Is a Perfect Choice to Stay Fit
B.Gardening Can Develop Better Mental Health
C.The Garden Can Be a Happy Place for Gardeners
D.Gardening Turns Out to Be an Effective Treatment

文章大意:本文是新闻报道。讲述了Ms. Liivand模仿海豚鱼鳍用单脚蹼游泳,从而引发人们关注海洋塑料垃圾的故事。

10 . Merle Liivand was born in Estonia. As a child, she had health problems, and began swimming to help her lungs get stronger. She was soon taking part in open water swimming contests, sometimes even in icy water. In 2017 and 2019, she represented Estonia at the World Aquatics Championships.

Eleven years ago, Ms. Merle moved to Miami, Florida. In one training session, she nearly wound up swallowing some plastic floating in the sea. That experience made her think of all the sea animals who faced similar pollution every day. She began swimming with a special single swimming fin(鳍状物) attached to both of her feet. This rubbery “monofin” allows her to swim by kicking both of her legs together. “Swimming with the monofin without using my arms is similar to how dolphins and sea animals swim,” says Ms. Merle. She believes that swimming with a monofin “sends a bigger message”.

Ms. Merle first set the world record for swimming with a monofin in 2019, when she swam 10 kilometers off the coast of California. In 2020, she broke the record again by swimming 20. 6 kilometers, this time in Miami, Florida.

Last year, she set a new Guinness World Record by swimming 30 kilometers, again in Florida. Even though it took her 9 hours and 19 minutes to set that record, Ms. Merle says she knew she could go farther. So for the last year, Ms. Merle has been getting up at 4 every morning, putting on her monofin and going swimming.

On May 7, Ms. Merle broke the record once more, this time swimming the length of a full marathon. It took her 11 hours and 54 seconds to swim 42.2 kilometers.

To keep her energy up, a friend followed her in a kayak and gave her food and water from time to time. Along the way, Ms. Merle picked up all the trash she found and put it in the kayak. By the end of her marathon, the kayak held three bags full of trash.

1. Why did Merle Liivand start to swim?
A.To become physically fitter.B.To pick up rubbish out of water.

2. What’s Ms. Merle’s terminal purpose in swimming with a monofin?
A.To help develop her strength.B.To improve her swimming speed.
C.To experience the life of a sea animal.D.To raise public awareness of plastic pollution.
