文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了世界上一些著名的电影节。

1 . Today we travel to film festivals around the world to learn about their different histories and goals. Some of the festivals are major competitions, while others are smaller events to help draw attention to more experimental movies.

One of the most famous film festivals in the world takes place in the French town of Cannes during twelve days in May. The Cannes Film Festival started in 1946 as a social gathering for showing movies. Later, the popular event developed into an important competition.

Visitors to the festival also see a series of short films, as well as films which don’t compete for awards. But the Cannes Film Festival is more than about honoring special movies and seeing famous actors. Each year, more than 1,000 people from almost 100 countries gather to watch about 900 movies. This helps link people from all areas of the movie industry. Also, it helps filmmakers sell their movies to distributors(发行人) so they can be shown in theaters around the world.

The Venice International Film Festival starts in late August. Dating back to 1932, it is one of the oldest movie festivals in the world.

Many film festivals have very specialized subjects. In Belgium you can go to the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival. For 26 years this festival has been showing science fiction and horror movies from around the world. If this event seems too frightening, you can attend the International Children’s Film Festival in Frankfurt, Germany. In Turkey, the International Istanbul Film Festival, which was first organized in 1982, shows movies about art, music, dance or literature.

On any given day, a film festival is probably taking place somewhere around the world. Here we’ve only discussed a small number of them. These important and exciting events help to celebrate the art and industry of movies.

3 . The Grand Canal, a large waterway that first connected north and south China over 1400 years ago, is shorter than it once was, but it is still the longest man-made river in the world.

The original Canal system began around the year 605. China’s emperor realized that he needed a better way to feed his army. Specifically, he needed a way to move food quickly from China’s southern rice-growing region to the country’s north. Thus, he spent 6 years on construction of the first section of the Grand Canal, connecting existing canals, lakes and rivers. However, by 1127, parts had begun to worsen. In 1279, Kublai Khan began to repair and create a more direct north-south route to and from Beijing.

The Grand Canal was also an important cultural channel. Soldiers, merchants and artists transported ideas, regional foods and cultural practices from one part of China to another. It is said that Peking duck and the Pecking opera were both brought north via the canal. Even today, the country’s watery highway plays an important economic role in China. In addition, local governments, eager to increase tourism and real estate (房地产) development, are beautifying areas along the Canal.

This development comes at a price, though. In Yangzhou, the city government has torn down almost all of the older Canal-side buildings. Farther south in the cities of Zhenjiang, Wuxi and Hangzhou, the situation is similar. “Traditionally, we talk about eighteen main cities on the Grand Canal, and each had something unique and special about it.” explains Zhou Xihua, the director of the Grand Canal museum. “But now many of these cities are all the same: a thousand people with one face.”

In 2005 a group of citizens proposed that the historic Grand Canal be made a UNESCO world heritage site. The status would protect both the waterway and architecture around it. “Every generation wants the next generation to understand it, to look at its monuments.” said Zhu Bingren, an artist who cowrote this proposal. UNESCO status was officially granted in 2014. The hope now is that the grand Canal, one of the world’s great engineering accomplishments, will continue to link north and south China for centuries to come.

3. What is the underline sentence meaning in paragaph 4?

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了新一代5G技术将会给体育行业带来巨大的变革。

9 . When James Haskell started playing professional rugby football, technology’s influence was very limited. One of its first and important uses within the game, he says, was just urine testing (尿检). “A lot has changed since then. Now all the players wear GPS heart-rate monitors,” the former England and Wasps ruby union player says. Data and technology have become important parts of a professional sports team and its players’ lives, Haskell says.

But this is only the beginning.

“New 5G will bring a whole set of new devices to the sports industry and the connectivity of supply chains that isn’t possible today,” explains Scott Petty, the chief technology officer of Vodafone UK. Vodafone’s recent research shows 70 per cent of decision-makers in the sports industry believe it is behind other industries in adopting new technology.

However, things are changing gradually. The research suggests that 76 per cent of sports leaders say new 5G technology will drive innovation ( 革新) within their organisations. According to research, sport is an area where new 5G will have a huge impact. It has the ability to transform the fan experience and help athletes improve their fitness and training programmes. Around 74 per cent of sports leaders believe 5G will help meet rising fan expectations.

Haskell is looking forward to seeing what 5G will enable in the future. Vodafone’s new 5G network was launched ( 推 出) in July. At the launch, two Wasps players demonstrated an innovative use of the tech when they conducted a joint training session, despite being 100 miles apart. At an event in London, Will Rowlands tackled (擒抱摔倒) a bag and almost at the same time, through wearable devices, De Jongh felt the force of the tackle.

Going forwards, Haskell expects that players will be able to quantify (量化) their performance in new ways. The key to this? The ability to read real‑time data and make training programmes completely personalised. Haskell says: “This ability will be awesome and you’ll suddenly be able to quantify everything!”

This will be game-changing.

1. What does Haskell say about the early use of technology in rugby football?
A.It mainly focused on performance data collecting.
B.It changed his attitude towards rugby football.
C.It excited people’s attention to rugby football.
D.It made an impact only to a small extent.
2. What can we learn from Vodafone’s recent research?
A.The sports industry should find a new way to meet fan expectations.
B.The sports industry plays a leading part in adopting new technology.
C.Most sports leaders have a very positive response to new 5G technology.
D.New 5G technology will be widely used in the sports industry very soon.
3. How did the demonstration of Vodafone’s new 5G network turn out?
A.It was a real success.
B.It raised doubts among players.
C.It made Vodafone world-famous.
D.It fell far short of the expectations.
4. What does the underlined word “awesome” in paragraph 6 mean?
A.Unnecessary.B.Impressive.C.Personal.D.Impossible.

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。因伤退役的NBA球星Brandon Roy完成了从明星球员到明星教练的完美蜕变。

10 . At Seattle’s Garfield High School, a dozen (十多个) basketball players are practicing. These guys take the game seriously at this school. A half-dozen coaches keep everyone focused as Garfield prepares for a Saturday playoff game. In the middle of all this is Brandon Roy, the former NBA All-Star and Garfield’s greatest player. Roy is the head coach.

Bad knees forced him out of pro basketball well before his time. Four years after his forced NBA retirement, he began coaching at Seattle’s Nathan Hale High School in 2017 with no background whatsoever and won a state championship. He moved to his alma mater (母校) the following year and got another state title with a once-beaten team. “Really the thing that brought me to coaching was I missed basketball,” Roy said.

After taking 2019 off from coaching to deal with personal issues, Roy returned and has his team pointed at state again. He owns a 78-5 coaching record.

With his success, others frequently discuss whether Roy wants to move up the ranks as he did as a player. “My ultimate goal is not to coach in the NBA but to build a real strong foundation at my alma mater. I don’t feel challenged to make it to the next level. I feel challenged right here to make it at this level.”

As practice comes to a close, Roy gathers his players around him and his coaches and they talk about the game ahead. Before everyone heads home, he has them shake hands. Players and players. Coaches and players. It’s a show of respect and togetherness.

Mostly, he just listened to his mother and followed her insightful direction to become a topflight coach. “My mom gave me the best advice — she said keep your ego (自我) out of it,” Roy said. “She told me to forget what I had achieved in the NBA and be down-to-earth. She trusted that I’d be pretty good at it.”

1. Why does Brandon Roy show up at court?
A.To prepare for a game as a player.B.To coach a student basketball team.
C.To look for future basketball players.D.To select former NBA players as assistants.
2. What happened to Brandon Roy in 2018?
A.He was badly injured.B.He was forced to retire.
C.He led a team to success.D.He gave up his basketball career.
3. What is Brandon Roy’s final goal?
A.Going back to the NBA as a professional player.
B.Being a professional coach in an NBA team.
C.Improving the basketball level of his alma mater’s team.
D.Becoming the greatest basketball player of his alma mater.
4. What lesson did Brandon Roy’s mother give him?
A.Try to trust others.B.Learn from the best.
C.Don’t become too proud.D.Never give up on dreams.
