Li Daiyu and her cousin Liu Qian went to Canada to visit their c    1     in Halifax on the Atlantic coast. Rather than travel b    2     commercial airline all the way, they decided to f    3     to Vancouver and then take the train. For both of them, the thought of crossing the whole c    4     by rail was exciting.

B    5     starting out, they spent a couple of days in Vancouver, seeing the sights. During their first day, as is typical of Vancouver, it r    6    . Despite the weather they were able to take a boat ride out into the bay, and later v    7     an Island that had wonderful shops selling crafts and antiques. The next day was clear and mild, and they were p    8     to see the beautiful mountains looking out over the city. Later they took a pleasant h    9     in a forest just a short d    10     away.

The first group, the Romans, came in the first century. Some of their great     1     included building towns and roads. The Vikings came in the eighth century, left behind lots of new vocabulary, and also the names of many     2     across the UK. The last group were the Normans. They conquered England after the well-known Battle of Hastings in the 11^th century. They had castles built all around England, and made changes to the     3     system.

One day, when my two brothers and I were coming back home, we met a h    1     (可怕的) storm. All at once, the sky was c     2     with clouds. With the wind and waves, we were going in the direction of the whirlpool, nearer and nearer to the edge of it. After we went over the edge and were still a    3    , I knew I must do something in order to     4     (存活下来), so I made three important observations. F    5    , I made the right decision and was picked up by the fishermen.
