About a mile behind our house lay a pond. In summer, my brother Harry and I would run through a stand of trees to throw stones over the water there. The pond wore a collar of black mud. It was not a place for swimming. When winter came, the pond was once again an inviting place.
One day when ice covered it, Harry said to me, “Try walking across.”
The ice looked thick. No water showed through it, but I felt uncertain about it.
“Go ahead,” Harry said. “Try it. You’re lighter than I am. You go first. If the ice holds, we can run and slide on it. It’ll be fun.”
I wanted to please Harry, and I thought about the fun of a long slide on the ice. I began to take steps across the pond. In the middle of the pond,the ice cracked. I threw out my arms. The next thing I knew was hanging on to the edge of a hole in the ice. From my shoulders down I hung in icy water. I thought of the bottom of the pond. I knew it would be black and awful down there. I tried to climb out of the hole, but when I got a knee on the ice, it broke like window glass. Again and again I tried to get out. Again and again the ice broke. The hole widened. As my coat became wet, it pulled me down. I grew tired of trying to get out and rested my arms on the ice.
I looked at Harry on the shore. He just stood there. “I can’t get out! Help me!” I screamed when I caught some breath.

On this fine day of fun and all things Disney, we reached the park’s Ferris wheel, called the Sun Wheel(now Mickey’s Fun Wheel). If you do not know what the Sun Wheel is, I can briefly explain: It is the most terrifying Ferris wheel. Why? Well, the seat that you sit in, while 160 feet in the air, slides inwards and outwards as the wheel rotates (转动). If you rock it hard enough, it can almost do a complete 360-degree spin (旋转). This creates a terrifying experience because it is like a 160-fool-lall swing.
So I stood in line with my grandmother, and neither of us had any idea that this was not an ordinary Ferris wheel. After a long wait it was finally our turn to ride it. We sat inside and began to rise up and that’s when I discovered the ride’s special feature. I started with slow, easy rocking and my grandmother began to fear for her life. Worrying we would fall out, she asked me to stop.

Mary Lee seemed to have everything. She was very beautiful with a wonderful figure and an attractive face. She was very rich. Her clothes were better than anyone else’s and she had more of them. Her books were always new and expensive as were her pens, school bags and bicycle. She was very clever too and without appearing to do very much work. She was always the first in all the examinations and always answered all the questions, while the rest of the class were still thinking.
With all this, or really because of all this, no one liked Mary Lee. She was too good, too clever and she was also very proud. No one was quite good enough to talk to her or to be seen with her or to be her friend. And so, with all her proud ways and riches and brains, she was lonely but she did not care because she was always the best in everything. She was like a princess in the class. She always thought that the other students kept their distance from her because she was too excellent. “Lions and tigers are always lonely, and only the weak get together,” she told herself.
As the end of term drew near, the pupils including Mary Lee began to think about the most important prize of all. This was the prize, offered by the principal, for the best essay to be written on one of two subjects: Happiness and Friendship. All the teachers and pupils paid close attention to the prize, for it was really a great honor. “I needn’t worry about that,” thought Mary Lee, as the others began to read and to think about the essay. “I shall easily win. After all, my compositions are always better than the other students’.”

It will make her feel better.” I was amazed that he'd come up with this sweet idea. So we went over and told the flower seller what we wanted. “Just take it,” she replied. “I can't take your money for such a wonderful deed.”
By now medical staff had arrived, and were looking after the injured woman. There we saw the old man was also in great horror, but he tried to comfort his wife and held her hands tightly to encourage her to be strong. We gave the flower to the woman's husband and I told him it was from my son. At that time, the old man started crying and said, “Thank you very much.” He then turned to me, “You have a wonderful son. Happy Mother's Day to you.”
The man bent down and gave his wife the flower, telling her who it was from. Regardless of being badly hurt, the old lady looked up at Tennyson with love in her eyes and gave him a little smile. And my son bent down his body to the injured lady and tenderly said, “Happy Mother's Day to you, too.”

I had an interesting childhood. It was filled with surprises and amusements, all because of my mother---loving, sweet, yet absent-minded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a lot about her.
My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a few weeks driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way. As the first day of our trip approached, David, my eight-year-old brother, and I unwillingly said good-bye to all of our friends. Who knew if we’d ever see them again? Finally, the moment of our departure arrived, and we loaded suitcases, books, games, camping equipment, and a tent into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we’d returned home to get the purse and traveler’s checks Mom had forgotten.
David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving while Dad slept: “You stand outside the door and play lookout(放哨) while I go, and I’ll stand outside the door and play lookout while you go.” I had terrible pictures in my mind: “Honey, where are the kids?” “What?!
