1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

In the faraway land, there was a beautiful kingdom with its unique rule. The rule said, everyone may become the king, with all of his rights to govern the country for five years. After that he must be caught, his body will be tied and he will be thrown away to a remote island where the jungle is thick and there are plenty of wild animals and no human.

Then, one by one, people became the king. The first man said, “OK, I’m ready to be the king.” And he became a king for five years. What he did in his five years was enjoying his position. He threw big parties, went to many beautiful places, married many women, collected many luxurious things and did other things that pleased himself. Those were all he did, and he never prepared anything for his future.

Every other king was the same until a young man came and declared his wish. By the constitution (宪法) he was granted his wish. He would be the king for five years before being thrown away to the island. But he thought that even if he had a happy and free life in the five years, his life as a king would come to an end at last. He was always thinking.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I took a trip to visit New York with my dad after graduating from high school. One of the places on his list for us to visit was a “rare violin shop” since I played the violin all four years and participated in the honor orchestra as well. We made our way down the crowded streets and eventually stopped in front of a tall building.

This building was not what I pictured when I heard “rare violin shop”. I’d been imagining a street-level shop, open to the public, with some interesting and old violins on display, maybe with a luthier (制琴师) in the back. As we walked inside, took the elevator to the sixth floor, and stood in front of an apartment, I knew something felt off. I voiced my concern to my dad as he rang the doorbell but was ignored. My dad had never been great at interpreting social standards.

We were greeted by a receptionist who asked if we had an appointment, since they were by appointment only. I wanted the ground to swallow me whole and I was instantly aware of the sweaty, summer tourist clothes we had on. My dad eagerly told them that no, we didn’t but, “my daughter plays the violin with her high school orchestra and isn’t that great? And we would love to just go inside and browse! Don’t mind us!”

The receptionist gave him a strange look but took it in stride (泰然处之) and excused herself to talk to someone behind a door. She came back with the owner, a well-dressed man, who told us that since he had no other appointments right now, he would love to give us a tour!

The starting price for a violin here, we found out, was very high. He showed us around a very private-feeling and swanky (时髦且豪华的)-looking apartment, pointed out a room where he casually mentioned he would chat with Joshua Bell when he came by, and opened the most interesting two-person safe I’ve ever seen to show me several multi-million-dollar violins.

He asked me questions about my orchestra and what pieces I liked to play as well.

3 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Reflecting on the experience of being trapped in a yacht(帆船)and saved later, Tony told reporters, ". . . Now that Fm getting a bit older, there is one thing that I don't mind telling the world: In these last six days, I'm a different person. I won't be so rude to people, not that I was, but I’ll be much more of a gentleman and I’ll listen to people a lot more. And as a dear old friend of mine, David, once told me when he got over the heart attack and smelt the fresh air again, he said, 'God, it was like being born all over again; life was great! "Well, that's how I feel now, like being born all over again. "

In January 1997 British yachtsman Tony was sailing solo deep in the Southern Ocean. A gale(大风)was raging. The waves, reaching the height of a five-story building, rushed on him with a sound like roaring thunder. As his yacht fell down the face of a wave, it hit something in the water and turned upside down.

Tony, who had been sheltering in the two-meter by three-meter cockpit(驾驶舱), found it had become his prison. As giant waves buffeted the boat, water poured in and out a broken window, knee high at one end, waist high at the other. The air temperature was down to 2 degrees Celsius, and it was pitch black-the sun couldn't go through the upturned yacht.

Twelve times Tony left the cockpit in a vain attempt to release his life raft. Then he had to take refuge in his little cabin. Sitting inside the cold inky darkness, Tony only had some chocolate and a device for making fresh water from the salty sea. With his fingers becoming frostbitten, Tony thought that he v/as going to die. The odds of being rescued seemed impossibly small.

5 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

There are a lot of things to do with old books that you no longer want, depending on their condition. You might choose to sell them to a bookstore, pass them on to friends, or simply throw them out if they are in poor shape.

When you decide to deal with old books, check their condition first. If it is an old book with a torn cover and pages, sell it to the recycle bin. If the book is a hardcover (精装书) and the cover is still in good shape, sell it to a used bookstore or donate (捐赠) it to a charity.

When selling old books to a bookstore, you should know that book buyers are often looking for something special. It is important to know the content of old books if you are taking them to a bookstore. Fiction is usually good, but travel guides are not. If you want to donate old books to a charity, avoid donating books that are in truly poor condition. If a book is dirty or missing the cover, the charity cannot sell it or give it out. Most charities also prefer that you enter the charity with your donation.

You may also want to consider exchanging books with friends. You just need to place a shelf of old books that you don’t want by the door, and encourage your friends to take books that look interesting. If your entire social network follows this practice, a mobile library of old books can be formed. You can also have a book swap party, where everyone brings a box of old books for other people to look through. After the book swap, box up the rest of the books and donate them to a charity.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。(字数150左右)

"Why did you do this without asking for my permission first? Don't you know it's a total waste of time and it will have a bad influence on your study?" That's what my mother yelled at the ten-year-old me when she found out that I had signed up for an English story-telling competition.

I bowed my head; yes, she was right. By then I was entering Grade Six, faced with the biggest challenge yet to come — the examination to enter my dream junior high school. For that. I had given up my beloved piano lesson, my favourite cartoon program and even the joyful weekend family reunion with my cousins. I wouldn't be surprised at all if my very strict-university-teacher mother got angry at me when I chose to do anything that had little to do with study at that important moment. In her opinion, if I hadn't spent all my time on my study I would have difficulty in entering my dream junior high school.

But that's not all to it. When I was ten, I was nervous, shy, tongue-tied when facing strangers, and essentially a bookworm. These signs looked fatal (致命的) to my mother, and possibly to you, too; she thought that I could be anything but a good public speaker.

Well, I myself actually said no to my English teacher at first, because I had never done anything like that before and I was afraid. But he told me that — since I liked reading so much, why not try to tell a story I love to everyone? He also promised me that the judges were not frightening at all; just think of them as carrots and cabbages in a vegetable garden.

The ten-year-old me was persuaded by my teacher's words.

7 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Small boats loaded with various goods sped to the great liner as she was entering the harbour. Before she had anchored, the men from the boats had climbed on board and the decks were soon covered with all kinds of beautiful things they tried to sell. It was difficult not to be attracted. Many of the tourists on board had begun bargaining with the tradesmen, but I decided not to buy anything until I had got off.

I had no sooner got off the ship than I was assailed (纠缠) by a man who wanted to sell me a diamond ring. I had no intention of buying one, but I could not deny the fact that I was impressed by the size of the diamonds. Some of them were as big as marbles (小玻璃球). The man tried his best to prove that the diamonds were real. As we were walking past a shop, he held a diamond firmly against the window and made a deep impression in the glass. It took me over half an hour to get rid of him.

The next man to approach me was selling expensive pens and watches. I examined one of the pens closely. It certainly looked authentic. At the base of the gold cap, the words ‘made in the U.S.A.’ had been neatly carved. The man said that the pen was worth£50, but as a special favour, he would let me have it for£30. I shook my head and held up five fingers showing that I was willing to pay£5. Gesticulating (打手势) wildly, the man acted as if he found my offer extremely unfair, but he finally reduced the price to£10. Shrugging my shoulders, I began to walk away when, a moment later, he ran after me and pushed the pen into my hands. Though he kept throwing up his arms in despair, he readily accepted the£5 I gave him. I felt especially pleased with my wonderful bargain.

8 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Taylor opened her sleepy eyes and looked out the window at the foggy field below. “NO!” she cried, now fully awake. Buttermilk, the cow, was in Mama’s daisy(雏菊) field.

I must have forgotten to fasten the gate last night, Taylor thought as she pulled a sweatshirt over her head. Mama was planning to sell daisy bouquets at the fair next week. But Buttermilk was eating the flowers.

Taylor hurried outside and grabbed the lead rope hanging on the porch. “Why can’t you stay in the field?” she shouted at Buttermilk as she headed across the yard to the daisy field.

Buttermilk stood nipping (啃咬) tender flowers off their stems. Taylor leaped to her feet and rushed to the cow. Angry and anxious, she thought to herself: “When I grow up, I’ll be an artist and paint pictures all day. I’ll never own a cow. Too much trouble.”

Just as Taylor was about to snap the lead rope onto Buttermilk’s collar, the family dog, Red, rounded the corner of the house. The cow couldn’t stand Red.

Buttermilk took off, tearing through the daisies and across the yard. She finally ran through the open gate and into the field.

“Thank goodness!” Taylor said as she closed the gate and secured the latch (门栓).

She turned to look at the flower garden. Most of the daisies were either eaten or crushed.

Mama came out of the house. “What’s going on?” she asked. She looked sadly at her garden.

“I forgot to latch the gate,” Taylor said.“ I’m so sorry.”

“I know you are.” Mama sighed and gave Taylor a hug. “You learned an important lesson today.”

Taylor’s heart was heavy as she went back into the house. She had to think of a way to make it up to her mother.
