The Right Decisions

Lisa looked at her watch outside of the gift store and knew that in half an hour her mother would be standing on the doorsteps of their house waiting. She had to make up her mind or go home without a proper birthday gift.

“What should I do?” Lisa asked herself. “I owe Mr. Chapman five dollars for a science fair display board tomorrow.” That caused a serious, uncomfortable problem. If Lisa bought the tiny cactus (仙人掌) for her mother’s birthday, she would have money for the science board. If she bought the more expensive cut flowers, she wouldn’t.

Upon stepping into the gift store, the beautiful flowers immediately caught her eye. Lisa knew her mother would adore the flowers, so without another thought, she grabbed them.

Mrs. Mills, the store manager, smiled at Lisa when she came to the counter to purchase the beautiful flowers. “Wow, I wonder who will be gifted those beautiful flowers, Lisa,” she asked with a smile.

“It’s for my mother’s birthday, Mrs. Mills,” Lisa replied, returning a smile. The price tag (价签) said the flowers cost $5.30, and Lisa gave Mrs. Mills a ten-dollar bill.

Upon stepping out of the store, Lisa looked down at the flowers in her left hand — the afternoon sun made them brighter in color. She was glad she had made the right decision. Then, her eyes looked down upon her right hand, where the change that Mrs. Mills gave to her lay. To her surprise, she saw a five-dollar bill inside. Mrs. Mills definitely had made a mistake and she had been given too much money!

Lisa was caught in a dilemma. A voice inside told her to keep the money, so she could have amazing flowers for her mother and five dollars for Mr. Chapman’s science board. But another voice told her it was dishonest to keep the extra money, and Mrs. Mills would be held responsible for the mistake.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When Jenny was in high school, she took a part-time job at a grocery store near the school. She was smart and nice while the boss Elsie and other workers there were friendly. As a result, Jenny made friends with them. After Jenny graduated, she gave up her part-time job, said goodbye to her friends, and went to a city far away to go to college, not knowing these friends would do her a big favor in the future.

Months later after Jenny was in college, the Christmas holiday approached. She applied herself to the final exams. Jenny’s eyes were aching from lack of sleep. She tried to rub(擦) the tiredness from her eyes, but failed. So she stood and stretched and looked through the window to watch the first snow of the season.

As she stared out of the window of her dorm, memories of once happily staying with her family members for the holiday hit her mind.

Feeling sad, Jenny sat back down at her desk and tried to focus on her studies. In just seven more days, the final exams would be over and all the students in the freshman college dorm would be going home except her. She would be moving temporarily to another dorm for the

Christmas break. Instead of enjoying homemade pies, cookies and roast turkey together with her family, Jenny would be eating alone in the school dining hall. It was not a prospect she looked forward to.

Jenny had no choice. She was a student from Pennsylvania attending college in Utah and her family of ten couldn’t afford to pay for her ticket home. She was able to attend college because of the several scholarships she had got.

Unable to focus her mind, Jenny stared back at the white snow dancing in the air. This would be her first Christmas away from home.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When I was in high school, there was nothing I loved more than going bowling—and no place I’d rather be than Al’s Kingpin Lanes. That place was great: Friday 5-dollar foot-long hot dogs with all the toppings, old arcade (拱廊)cabinets in the back that had classics like Galaga, and always playing 1940s jazz and 1950s rockabilly music. I got so obsessed with bowling that I even managed to convince my high school to start a varsity (校队)and junior varsity bowling sports club.

During my high school years, from freshman to junior year, starting and leading my school’s bowling club really helped me to come out of my shell. As time went on, our varsity team began winning local and even state tournaments. Soon enough, our school was getting bowling trophies(奖杯)to go alongside the trophies for more traditional sports like swimming and track and field. These victories not only boosted my popularity but also allowed me to form meaningful connections along the way! Life was great back then.

Still, the bowling memory that really stuck out to me was when I met Leroy. Although Leroy happened to go to the same high school as I did, we didn’t really cross paths that much. I was already a junior by then, and as I found out later, he was still a young freshman. The strange thing about it, though, was how he would always hang out in the back, nervously watching everyone else play. Despite his regular presence, he seemed too nervous and shy to play or even talk with others.

Then, one evening while I was out with my friends at Kingpin Lanes, something remarkable happened. I witnessed Leroy actually picking up a bowling ball for the first time. His shoes were untied, he struggled to lift even the lightest ball up, and with each throw, the ball ended up in the gutter lane(边沟), resulting in straight zeroes across the board.

That’s when I finally made my way over to say hi to Leroy.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I looked around the crowded waiting room at the hospital and sighed. Would the doctor be able to see my eight-year-old son next? I couldn’t stop shaking as the wound in his forehead was deep.

We were at the hospital because another child had thrown a rock at Luke during the break as he was running around the corner.

Luke received four stitches (缝针). I fought back the urge to cry. For the next two days, his eye was swollen shut and black and blue. I felt like I’d had a mini nervous breakdown. Every time I tried to sleep or tend to do some housework, horrible thoughts crept into my mind. What if he’d lost his eye? What if he’d had brain damage? His doctor assured me he was going to be fine, but the what-ifs kept coming. Fear had taken over, and then the fear turned to anger. I was angry with the child who’d thrown the rock. I just couldn’t shake it. What was she thinking? She should have known better.

Several days later, Luke’s teacher called me that evening to see how he was feeling, telling me Katie felt terrible and heartbroken over what had happened. I asked the teacher to make Katie understand she couldn’t do that and remind her of the dangers of throwing rocks. The teacher agreed, which made me feel better.

I noticed that as Luke started to heal physically, I wasn’t as angry. I thought about Katie and Luke. I wanted to stand up for my son, protect him, but I didn’t want to mistreat Katie because I learned from the teacher Katie really was a nice kid and that she was just trying to remove the rock so no other children would trip on it.

Last night, Luke’s teacher stopped by and dropped off a get-well card that Katie had made. Luck and I read it several times, and I couldn’t help but feel a little choked up. It was a sincere apology.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Mama and Papa were like most parents. They wanted the best for their kids. Jeff and Jenna were like most kids. They wanted the best for themselves-the best place in front of the TV, the biggest piece of cake and the most candies.

One night, when the noisy kids were sound asleep, Mama lay awake worrying. She sighed a big sigh, thinking how to teach Jeff and Jenna to mend their selfish ways. Lecturing didn’t work.

As Mama lay there, she thought about how kids learn. Kids learn by doing. They learn to walk by walking. That’s the answer, thought Mama. The kids will learn to help others by helping others. But questions of who, when, and where went unanswered as she drifted off to sleep.

To her pleasure, those questions were soon answered. The next day, they happened to meet Mrs. Marie, the elderly widow who lived just down the road, at the checkout line at the supermarket.

Mama asked the kids to say hello to Mrs. Marie, about whom the kids were a little nervous. She was really old and kind of bent over. And there was that crooked cane she used when she walked. But the real reason they were nervous about her was that two days ago their ball had gone into her yard and knocked over some flowers in the garden and broke the glasses of the attic. They had never apologized.

When Mama and the kids were loading their groceries into the car, Mrs. Marie came out of the supermarket pushing her little collapsible shopping cart.

“Where are you going?” called Mama.

“To the bus stop,” she said, “The bus goes right by my house.” “So does our car,” said Mama.

7 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文.

After six hours of fishing, John Franklin and his sister Jane were ready to call it a day. It was 7 pm. The summer sun was setting, and the fishes had stopped biting. But Jane’s 12-year-old son Conrad was having so much fun that he begged “Let’s do just one more run,” Since the mild weather was holding out, why not? John turned the boat around and headed back.

Yet, you never knew. They hadn’t even cast their lines when the wind picked up suddenly. Rough waves began battling against the little boat. “Check your life jackets and hold the boat!” John shouted, As Jane and her son were on the point of screaming, two big waves rolled over, one right after the other. Within a few seconds, the boat tipped(倾斜). Backward and turned over, throwing three of them into the water.

Out of the worst, the luckiest thing was that they had life jackets on and the boat didn’t sink immediately. Everyone grabbed onto it. “Let’s get back in the boat, Mommy,” Conrad cried, trembling with fear.

“Don’t panic. People know we’re out here,” Jane comforted him. “They’ll send help soon.”

Treading(踩) the water, the adults exchanged worried looks. They were floating in the middle of nowhere. “I knew we were in a tight spot,” said John, a third-generation commercial fisherman who, like Jane, had been raised on the bay.

When a strong wind blew through about half an hour with no sign of dying down, they had to make some decisions. It had been a perfect July day, with the water at a temperate 20 degrees centigrade, but everyone was cold by 9 pm.

If they weren’t rescued soon, they might not survive the night, John recognized, but the closest shoreline was about three miles away, starred by only a few glowing house lights.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

At 76 years old, Melanie felt tired all the time. It had nothing to do with her age, though. 14 years ago, her son, Anthony, died in a plane crash. After a long-time search, the rescuers said there were no survivors and no hope for the victims’ families.

Luckily, Melanie had Anthony’s son, Mark, and his wife, Kayla, to get her by. But it wasn’t the same. She missed Anthony and often felt hopeless about life. Her son died at a young age. He left a baby, and Kayla had not recovered from his death either.

One day at home, when watching the news on TV, Melanie and Kayla were suddenly surprised by what they were seeing. A news reporter was talking beside a man who looked like Anthony. He seemed older than he had ever been. The news caused great excitement. “It must be him!” Melanie and Kayla both said happily.

“If you recognize this man, please call the number on the screen. Recently, a vague (模糊的)memory of having a plane crash hit this man’s mind. But he still doesn’t remember anything before the crash 14 years ago near the Canary Islands. Authorities now have reason to believe that there was a mistake in the previous report that the crash left no survivors…”

When the news ended, Kayla called the number immediately. She told the attendant that she believed the man was her husband Anthony and provided details. Kayla also asked for more information about what had happened over the past 14 years since the accident. The attendant said, “14 years ago, some local fishermen found him who lost his memory. They offered him a job, and he has worked and lived with one of them since then.”

This attendant then told Anthony that his family were waiting for him to go home. Weeks later, Anthony went to the city where Melanie and Kayla lived. All the family members were waiting at the airport. Finally, the gates opened, and people were coming out.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was mid-December, and the temperature was a chilly minus 20-degree Celsius. I walked with my head down, passing the homeless beggars and ignoring all of them as usual. Then I saw him, sitting against a building, wrapped in thin cloth, holding a white cup in front of him. I heard his shaky, pitiful voice target me as I sped past him.

“Spare some change?” he asked. “I’ll appreciate it.”

I didn’t even bother looking up at him. In my mind, I briefly pictured him walking into the closest pub and drinking whisky with whatever money he managed to get. Or, maybe he needed another shot of cocaine. See, like most people in the city, it took me only moments to pass judgement on his life.

“I have no money on me.” I said quickly.

Looking back, I feel as though fate had set out that day to teach me a lesson. And it succeeded. Just a few feet past him, I slipped on a piece of ice on the sidewalk! I landed square on my right knee. The acute pain passed throughout as I lay on the ground. Then I heard a familiar voice only inches above me.

“Are you all right?” he asked.

I knew immediately this was the man I had just rushed past. Before tears welled up in my eyes, I saw the smooth, sympathetic look in his eyes.

I held his hand as I struggled to get to my feet. He held my arm as I limped (一瘸一拐地走) to the nearby bus stop and sat on the bench.

“My name is Mike,” he said with concern. “That was quite a fall you took, and you really need to see a doctor.”

“This bus goes past the hospital,” I said quickly, pointing to the bus sign above me.

Mike paused, and a look of sudden realization crossed his face. He pulled out his small white cup and dumped all the change into his hand.

“I know you don’t have any change on you,” he said, “I think this is just enough for you to take the bus.”
