1 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Sally had an anxiety disorder that made her fail to speak in social situations. I'm a nurse and use Bella to help children in my community, to bring them joy, comfort and confidence the way only a dog can. I thought back to when I'd first brought Bella to the school.

That morning in January, her teacher led us to a room by the school office. “Sally hasn't spoken outside her home in two years,” she told me. “Her parents have taken her to doctors, but nothing has worked.” A little girl stood shyly just inside the doorway. Her eyes brightened when she noticed my dog.

“This is Isabella Rose. I call her Bella,” I said. “Would you like to pet her? She doesn't know anyone here and she'd like to meet you. She does tricks. Would you like to see?”

Sally nodded. I moved my hand. Bella lay down and then rolled over. Sally's eyes cheered up. We visited the school once a week. I showed Sally the hand signals for various commands. She was a natural with Bella, maybe because she couldn't rely on the spoken word herself. Bella sensed that and responded. Soon Sally was able to take Bella through her paces all on her own. I could see her standing taller, more sure of herself each time we met.

One morning in March she was working with Bella, I heard a tiny voice, barely a whisper: “Good dog.” Sally didn't take her eyes off Bella, but I wanted to jump for joy. Sally spoke a little more each week, only to Bella at first, but then to me. She started giving voice commands with her hand signals and her confidence rose. Still, she hadn't spoken in her classroom and the school year was winding down.

Now, fiveyearold Sally stood nervously in front of her kindergarten class, with Bella, my trained dog, sitting calmly by her side. Her classmates were focused on Sally, waiting for her to speak. It was June—only one week of school left—but they had never heard her voice. Not once.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Every Thanksgiving Day for nine years, Peter, a poor man, sat down in the New York City park, waiting for an old gentleman who would invite him to eat a big meal. But this Thanksgiving Day Peter wasn't hungry. He was lucky. A lady often helped the poor on this day and she had served too much food to him. He had eaten so big a meal that he had almost no power to move. So he sat there, very full and his breath almost stopped.

At the time, an old gentleman was coming toward Peter's seat. Every Thanksgiving Day the old gentleman came there and then led Peter to a restaurant and watched him eating. Feeding Peter once a year was a tradition.

"I can give thanks on this day. I'll give you a meal that will surely make your body feel as strong as your mind." said the old gentleman. Always before those words had been music in Peter's ear. But now he looked up at the old gentleman's face with tears of suffering in his eyes. But the old gentleman didn't see Peter's eyes. Peter wondered why the old gentleman seemed sad as he spoke.

The old gentleman was thin and tall. His hair was whiter and thinner than last year. He had no family and he just thought Peter was his relative. He lived alone in an old house near the park. His eyes were bright with pleasure. Peter finally nodded and accepted the invitation. Peter was too full to eat but he understood that he was a part of the tradition.

The old gentleman led Peter to the same restaurant. He sat at the table silently. Today, it was strange that he kept staring at Peter's food as if he were very hungry. Peter began to eat. The turkey and all the other food were gone almost as quickly as they appeared. Peter saw the look of happiness on the old gentleman's face. After an hour, the big meal was finished.

"Thank you!" Peter said weakly. He stood up heavily and started to go. They said goodbye as they did each year. The old gentleman went away first.

Several years ago, I traveled by train to Stockholm. I was visiting two friends who were to meet me at the train station. I stood there waiting for my first friend to arrive and in the midst of   all the hurrying passengers that Friday afternoon, I heard a weak voice; it sounded like   a   question. I turned and saw a young man standing with a white cane ( 拐 杖 ) , his suitcase by his feet.   I   approached   and   asked,“Do   you   need   help?”“Yes,”he   replied,   nodding   his   head, appearing relieved.

He had been trying for some time, unsuccessfully, to get someone’s attention. He had   missed his train home. His cell phone battery was dead, and he needed to call his mother to tell   her of the circumstances.

This young man named Mustafa, I found out, had just completed his first week at a school   for the blind. He went to school on Mondays and returned home on Fridays. Of course I helped him call his mother. I did not understand what he spoke with her on my cell phone, but I could tell the language was Swedish. Of course the next problem was finding the right train home and telling his mother the new arrival time. Yet in   this disordered   train   station, I did   not want to   miss connecting with my friend Bogdan who was on his way to the spot where we were standing.

Before I could dial the number to call Bogdan, he was suddenly already there. I described the problem and Bogdan took the young man’s arm and we were off on our adventure to help get Mustafa home. While sorting out where his home was, what train, and what time, my second friend Marcello called and wondered where we were. Soon he joined us. It happened that   Marcello speaks 12 languages.

A few years ago,a child was lost in the woods. He was out with his brothers and sisters gathering berries, and was accidentally separated from them, and lost. The children, after looking in vain for some time in search of the little wanderer, returned, just in the dusk of the evening,to inform their parents that their brother was lost and could not be found.

The woods,at that time, were full of bears. The darkness of a cloudy night was rapidly coming on,and the alarmed father, gathering a few of his neighbors, hurried to search for the lost child. The mother remained at home almost distracted with suspense(心神不宁)。

As the clouds gathered, and the darkness increased, the father and neighbors with highly excited fears went across the woods in all directions and raised loud shouts to attract the attention of the child.

But their search was in vain. They could find no trace of the wanderer and as they stood under the branches of the tall trees and listened, they wished they might hear his weak voice. However,no sound was brought to their ears, but the strong wind as it swept through the thick branches of the forest.

The gathering clouds threatened an approaching storm, and the deep darkness of the night had already enveloped them.It was difficult to imagine what were the feelings of that father. And who could imagine how deep the worry which filled the heart of that mother,as she heard the wind and looked at the darkness in which her child was wandering!

The search was continued in vain till nine o'clock in the evening. Then, one of the parties was sent back to the village,to collect the villagers for a more extensive search.Every heart sympathized in the sorrows of the anxious parents.Soon groups of the people were seen climbing the hill. Before long, the rain began to fall, but no news came back to the village of the lost child.Hardly an eye was that night closed in sleep, and there was not a mother who did not feel for the parents.

Bales left the pavement of Base Road and stepped onto snow-covered Jewell Trail. She planned a six-hour hike through New Hampshire’s Mount Washington State Park. She had packed for almost every emergency and intended to walk alone.

She’d checked the weather forecast posted by the Mount Washington Observatory before she left. Based on her experience, Bales knew that her hike was realistic. Besides, she had two emergency plans and extra layers of clothing to better adjust her body temperature as conditions changed.

The hike up the lower part of Jewell Trail was pleasant. Bales felt excited as she walked up into snowy paths. The sun shone through the trees and cast a shadow over her smiling face. Less than an hour later, loads of dark clouds had replaced the sunshine, and snow covered the surrounding trees.

She still smiled. However, the weather was showing its teeth. Bales added even more layers to shelter herself from the cold winds and thick fog. She made her way across the snow-covered ridge (山脊toward Mount Washington and began to think about calling it a day. Suddenly, she noticed something: a single set of footprints in the snow ahead of her, which had been made by a pair of sneakers-typically not the type for hiking.

Meanwhile, Bales was getting colder, even though she was moving fast and generating some body heat. With strong gusts of wind screaming and attacking her back and left side, she decided to abandon her plan. The only thing, however, kept her on the trail was the sneaker tracks in the snow.

Paragraph 1:

Bales faced a dilemma about whether to follow the tracks or not.

6 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Many of us feel that there simply aren’t enough hours in the day, and when we have school work and social life to handle, it can make finding spare time even harder. Yet no matter how busy our daily schedules are, with some tips, all of us would be able to get back some precious time.

It’s tricky (难办的) managing time if you feel upset by the amount of things that need doing. In order to take control of your lives, write down all the things you need to do, and then prioritise (以优先顺序排列) them. Try to set realistic goals of when you might achieve them. Start with small, even if it’s just simple jobs that you want to finish at first. Besides, you should consider writing down appointments that you have or events that you need to go to, so you can have a full understanding of what you are doing at what time. This will also help avoid getting yourself double-booked, which can lead to even less spare time.

Whether you’re looking to gain some extra time at home or school, one of the biggest offenders for taking advantage of those precious minutes of the day is the distraction. You should try to avoid spending too much time talking on the phone or staying online until you have achieved what you have set out to achieve. If you need to get back to people or reply to texts or calls, schedule them for a specific time of the day.

Last but not least, figuring out the times of day when your energy is at its peak (最高点) can help you become more productive and get things done more quickly — giving you more free time to do the things that you enjoy most. You can also increase energy levels by getting enough sleep, eating healthily and taking exercise.
