Hello, I’m Dave. I’d like to tell you something about my summer holiday. During the summer holiday, I traveled to Wanning, Hainan, which is     1     as a paradise (天堂) for surfers. I learned to surf there.

On the first day, the coach taught me some     2     skills. First, push the surfboard into the waves, then lie down on the surfboard and wait for the waves     3    . Finally, when the waves come,     4     the surfboard “catch” the waves and try to stand on it.

After practicing several times on the beach, I thought I could surf     5     and I followed the coach to the sea. However, I could not follow the coach’s instructions of standing up at the right time.     6     I was nervous, I fell into the sea and ended up swallowing (吞咽) a lot of seawater. The coach patiently pointed out all my     7    .

After falling into the sea many times, I finally learned     8     to stand on the surfboard. When I successfully stood up for the first time with the rushing (急速流动的) waves, a huge feeling of     9     filled my heart.

Over the next several days, I continued practicing. My surfing got better and better. I also learned another     10    . I could use both hands to row the water before standing up. How happy and proud I was!

The “Great Green Wall of China” project is over forty years old. In this project, people plant trees in     1     part of China. Why are trees so important to us?

Because it is healthy to live around trees. They can keep us     2    , just like doctors. So we call them “doctor trees”.

Trees can clean the air. For people in large cities     3     air pollution, trees can be very important. Workers are     4     trees not just in city parks     5     also along streets to help clean the air.

Some     6     think that trees not just help clean the air. They are also good for our health. A study     7     that people in hospitals feel better when     8     trees from their rooms. And people with trees near their homes usually exercise more.

Scientists are also studying the healthy effects of trees on human minds. One effect of trees is that they make people feel happy and     9    . When people go through the neighborhood with more trees, they will walk slower and talk     10     often with each other.

Of course, another good effect is that “doctor trees” work for free!

There was a young woman called Mary who took too great     1     in her flower garden. One day, while Mary was looking through a flower list, a picture of a plant     2     her eyes. “I must have it.” So she     3     ordered it.

When it arrived, she planted it at the back of her garden. It grew well with beautiful green     4     all over it, but there were no blooms (花). Day after day, Mary continued to water it, feed it, and even talked to it.     5    , these were useless.

One week later, she felt so sad that she made up her mind to     6     it down and plant something else in     7     place. It was at this moment that her neighbor Tom rang her to see his garden that was next to     8    . The vine (藤) bloomed. “Thank you so much! This is the most beautiful bloom I have seen so far. You can’t imagine how much I enjoyed the flower you planted.” Mary walked through the gate into Tom’s garden, and she saw that on the other side of the wall, the vine was     9     with flowers. It didn’t flower on her side of the wall, but on the other side!

Sometimes one may not see the good result of his effort (努力), but that doesn’t mean it isn’t     10    . Maybe you could get a lot of surprise from the other side.

Montessori, the first female doctor in Italy, developed the Montessori Method, an educational system that encourages an unconventional and     1     style of teaching. Children learn from     2     everyday materials, and they develop at their own pace.

The Montessori philosophy is simple. For instance, one of its principles is that children are unique     3     who must be free to learn without being criticised or     4    . Two years ago, I was told I had a serious disease which was difficult to    1    . My body    2    all the time and thus I thought I didn’t have much longer to live. I was very afraid and    3    . Then one day, I had to go through a two-hour medical    4    .The doctor advised me to listen to music to help me relax. To my surprise and excitement, I really    5    with the help of music.
