5 . “I am ready for the responsibility(责任),” Adam had said last week. Today , that meant they were choosing a new dog. As they drove up to the place, Adam was filled with excitement. He’d wanted a dog for years, but his parents had always said “ you will love it for a few months, and then we will have to take care of your dog.” Finally , he was getting his dog.
They entered the animal shelter(收容所) and were greeted by a friendly woman. She explained how important it was to choose a dog for life, not just for a short time. Then she led them to the back. Dogs were barking(犬叫) and sounded lonely.
Adam’s father walked beside him. He shook his head and said, “It is heartbreaking. Someone got these dogs, loved them, and then moved on without them. People lose their houses, move away, or just get too busy for them. The dogs suffer for people’s mistakes.”
“We won’t make that mistake,” Adam promised.
“ No, we won’t. Once we choose one, it is part of our family. Family doesn’t throw away family. We didn’t throw grandpa away when he was sick. We took care of him until the end,” his father said.
Adam nodded. He remembered helping grandpa a lot.
“How about that one?” Adam suggested, reading the name tag(标签). It said, ”Walnuts.” His father read the papers next to the name tag. “ He’s three years old, healthy, and housetrained. Your mother will be pleased with him.”
Adam took Walnuts home that afternoon. Mom loved him right away, too. Adam was responsible for Walnuts for the rest of the dog’s life. He took care of his dog and even took him off to college with him.

6 . The number of overweight children in the United States has more than doubled in the past 20 years, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC). Being seriously overweight can lead to health problems later in life.
As a result, schools in several states, from California to Pennsylvania , have started sending home ”BMI report cards”. Those schools send home a report of a student’s body mass index(BMI). BMI is a calculation(计算) of weight and height that tells whether a person is overweight for his or her age.
Should schools send home BMI reports?
Some lawmakers say BMI reports warn parents of their children’s health and help fight obesity(肥胖). In 2003, former Arkansas official Mike Huckabee helped start the first program to report students’ BMI. The obesity rates in that state have since stopped increasing.
Not everyone thinks that reporting students’ BMI is a good idea. Parents protest that the reports hurt their children’s self-esteem(自尊心). Join Smith, a researcher, argues that schools that describe students as overweight are acting unfairly. Parents Brett Levy and Black Rashid from Chicago, believe that schools should teach kids to lead healthy lifestyles instead of reporting their BMIs. “telling a boy or girl BMI is not education” Brett told World News.

7 . YOUR VOICE
Animals in Danger — Take Action!!
Your voice, the school newspaper that gives you your say, is going to take part in supporting wildlife protection, and you will have the opportunity to be part of that. We hope that you will all join in the activity to save nature and help out as much as possible.
On Monday 22, we are going to visit Big Tree Park to adopt (收养) an animal. You will get the chance to see the animals in their natural environment and then we will all decide which animal to choose. There are lots of other things that you can do, including mountain biking and horse riding for those of you who want a bit of exercise. A word of warning, though, remember that you have to be careful around the animals.
Mr. Abbey, an expert on endangered species (濒危物种), is going to give us a talk on what we can do to make a difference to the environment. It will take place at the café at 2:00 pm — don’t be late! We really need you to support our program.

Students Union
It’s funny that you can always tell when somebody’s laughing behind your back. Jodie hadn’t really heard anything, maybe a whisper, but when she turned around, the girls in the back row of the class were looking at her, trying to hide smiles and laughs. She looked back at her teacher. Mr Swales was talking about what people do all day. He also wanted to find out what his students wanted to be when they grew up.
He called on Billy Miter first. “My daddy works in a bank,” Billy Miter said. “I guess I want to work in a bank too. There’s lots of money in the bank.” My parents have a grocery store,” Emmy Disal said. “Papa’s behind the counter and Mama keeps the cash register. But I want to be an airline pilot.”
Jodie liked it when Mr Swales asked them questions like this. He was about to call on Jodie when the girls in the back row burst out laughing.
Shirley Danes yelled, “Jodie’s daddy is a garbage man!”
Everybody in the class laughed out loud. Everybody except Jodie, that is. She felt her face turn bright red. She looked around the whole classroom. Everyone was laughing. Some kids were even holding their noses.
Jodie looked at Mr Swales. He was angry. He almost never raised his voice, but now he did.
“Silence! I want everybody to quiet down this instant.”
The laughter stopped immediately. The sound of cars and people going by out on the street came through the windows.” You should be ashamed of yourselves,” Mr Swales said. “Being a garbage man… I mean, is a difficult and enormously useful job. We should all be grateful to Mr Harris. Where would we be without him? Up to our cars in garbage, that’s where. How would you like that?”
“It’s not funny,” Mr Swales went on. “Garbage is a serious matter. I think you all owe Jodie an apology. And after that, you’re all going to write Jodie’s father, Mr Harris, a nice letter to tell him how much you appreciate what he does for all of us. In other words, keeping our city clear.”
