1 . How to support someone with depression virtually(虚拟地)

The pandemic has influenced many of us, especially when it comes to our mental health. Given our even more frequent online behavior these days, there are more chances to connect with and help depressed loved ones through a screen. The following ways can help you support your loved one with depression from a distance.

    1

Depression is a common and serious medical illness negatively affecting how you feel and think. It can be a challenge to recognize depression in a loved one when you're not seeing them in person regularly.       2     You can notice positive changes in the symptoms of depression. You can notice whether your friend is less physically anxious.

Seek mental health resources together

3     Your friend might want to find professional help but their drive to do so might be missing because depression can consume people's energy. As a friend, you could make that first step with them. If your friend asks you to help, search for mental health resources together on the Internet.

Send care packages and virtual reminders of your love.

Care packages can be an effective way to remind your loved ones they're important to you. You can send letters, or photos of good times you've shared. If your friend is open to it, you can also tall about what you sent during phone calls or texts.     4

Take care of yourself, too

5      If you're giving your all to your loved one with depression, you can't take care of them or yourself. But there are some tools to help you do both. Thinking in silence can improve mental health. You can also invite your friend to join you when exercising through apps.

A.But there are things you can do.
B.Know the definition and recognize the signs.
C.It is a good chance to show what you think of them.
D.It's a conversation starter, and it might help them feel good.
E.You might have heard of the saying "You can't pour from an empty cup."
F.When it comes to depression, sometimes the hardest step is the initial one.
G.There are a lot of symptoms, and not everyone experiences them all.

2 . In the year 2024,NASA plans to send astronauts to the moon. It will be the first time since 1970 that humans have touched down on Earth's only natural satellite. The task will also include the first woman to travel to the moon.

NASA will have a cool new tool to help it with this task: the Unified Geologic Map of the Moon, which was released by the United States Geological survey (USGS) in April. This is a topographical (地形上的) map——that is,it shows physical features, such as the height of mountains and the depth of valleys.

The new moon map took more than 50 years to make. It started with six original maps collected by cameras attached to orbiting satellites. One camera took wide-angle pictures of the moon. The other made topographical pictures by shooting laser at the moon's surface. Then all those pictures were laid on top of the map scans. With the pictures pieced together,we can see the moon's layers and tell the difference between its terrains(地形).

There are ancient highlands which were made when asteroids(小行星) crashed into the moon. They show up on the map in bright yellow. There are low-lying lava plains (熔岩平原) which formed when volcanoes erupted from 10 million to a million years ago. These show up as warm reds and pinks.

USGS geologist James Skinners the map is still not detailed enough to let NASA scientists decide whether a particular spot would make a good landing site, but it is a good foundation for their next studies.“Everything can be improved upon,”James adds.

3 . About a week after Glenda and Raphi Savitz welcomed their daughter Samantha to the world, they learned that she was deaf.

“She was the first deal person we had known,so obviously it was really a challenge,” Glenda says,“We knew right away that we had to get involved in the deaf community and get immersed in American Sign Language (ASL).”What the new parents didn't know then was that their new neighbors would decide to start learning ASL,too.

The family had moved to their neighborhood just three months earlier. When they moved in, a neighbor stopped by to deliver Glenda a telephone directory of everyone who lives in the neighborhood, complete with photos and contact information.

It’s a place people don’t want to leave. It’s also a place where people are serious about being good neighbors. So when Samantha was out with her parents, neighbors like Jill McNeil were really sad that they couldn’t greet the girl with words. Then he thought,“Since she couldn’t learn our language, why don’t we learn hers?”

McNeil and three other neighbors quietly signed up for local adult education classes in ASL. As with any new language, learning ASL takes time. But McNeil says the classes are working. “We know how to say, ‘Are you riding your bike?’ or ‘You have pretty new pink sports shoes.’ There’s a dog across the street that she loves to plays with. So we all know the sign for ‘dog’.

The classes have been such a hit that there are now two offerings,on two different weeknights, bringing the number of neighbors learning the language to about 40.

“We’re just thankful that we live here and we’re surrounded by these wonderful people.” Raphi Savitz says. And they’re not the only ones who say they’re grateful.

“We are really enjoying the whole process, not only learning ASI,but learning together.”says McNeil. “It’s made our neighborhood a closer place.”

5 . Teaching the next generation is an effective way to transform the future. A nonprofit group in Israel has taken this to heart by greening schools with soilless farming. The group is called Startup Roots, which is teaching students about hydroponics(水塔),and as a result, they are learning nutrition and science.

“Many children think that vegetables come from the grocery store. They have no concept of the chain behind it. So we try to connect kids with the source of their food,”said Robin Katz, founder of this organization. Katz started it in 2014, realizing that many children have access to fresh, healthy and affordable produce. She was drawn to hydroponics because this system uses 90 percent less water and grows more plants per meter                    than traditional farming.

Their first project created a soilless farm using just 100 square meters of a school. They started out by growing 14 plants per meter. The students were excited to pick vegetables in just 30 days and were soon able to produce 1500 vegetables per month!

Working with science teachers, the organization guides students to learn science and nutrition. In addition,it has brought in dieticians(营养学家) to teach the effect that food choices have on health. Startup Roots has improved their methods by installing vertical(垂直的) farming systems that can sit in hallways when schools are tight on space,Since the first school installation, their yield has improved greatly, resulting in the production of 120 plants per meter.

In order to educate the general population, the organization is also working to create an interactive(交互式的) urban agriculture exhibit. More youths are eagerly researching plant seeds and growing plants.

“There is no greater pleasure than to watch students grow by growing,”said Katz. Aside from producing organic vegetables in schools, the organization is planting roots in this young generation, encouraging them to lead healthier and more environmentally-friendly lives.

8 . The human brain has remained largely unchanged since it evolved. Long ago, humans had to focus on the task at hand. Yet today, our brains face a constant stream of digital information that, many scientists think, could have worrisome effects.

In October 2020, scientists published a study that supports the concern. The scientists studied media multitasking, which means people use multiple forms of digital or screen-based media at the same time. The study found that this type of multitasking may impair the ability to concentrate in young adults. This makes them unable to later recall specific situations or experiences.

For the study, scientists recruited 80 young adults aged 18 to 26. The participants were first presented with images of objects on a computer screen and asked to classify the pleasantness or the size of each one. After a 10-minute break, the subjects were then shown additional objects and asked whether the subjects were already classified or new.

During this process, the scientists measured participants’ brain activity and eye movement. This data let scientists track if the young adults were paying attention while being asked to remember the images. Then, the findings were compared to the results of a questionnaire the participants filled out before the study that asked questions about everyday attention, mind wandering and media multitasking.

The participants who reported more media multitasking had more absence of mind during the test. The pupils of their eyes were also smaller, which is a known marker of reduced attention. They also had reduced brain-signal patterns known to be associated with episodic memory—the recall of particular events.

Previous work had shown a connection between media multitasking and poorer episodic memory. The new findings offer clues as to why this might be the case.

“Individuals who are heavier media multitaskers may show worse memory because they have lower sustained attention ability,” says Kevin Madore, the paper’s lead author.

Madore says the new study stresses the need to be mindful of how we engage with media. “I think our data point to the importance of being consciously aware of attentiveness,” he says.

1. What do scientists say about media multitasking?
A.It may cause memory damage.B.It common among teenagers.
C.It enables individuals to better concentrate.D.It improves the ability to process information.
2. What does the underlined word “impair” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Demonstrate.B.Maintain.C.Draw.D.Weaken.
3. What can be learnt from the study?
A.Participants’ attention was closely monitored.
B.Filling out questionnaires isn5t a must in the research.
C.Participants were asked to classify objects twice.
D.Participants’ pupils expanded during the study.
4. What does the study lay stress on?
A.The importance of media awareness.B.The need to stay away from media.
C.The need to treat media properly.D.The importance of developing media.
