The important thing is that you’re taking time and reflecting on what you are grateful for.
Keep track of everything you’re grateful for

4 . Online games are very popular among people. They make a large amount of money and have a large user base, including lots of teenagers. But now, new rules on online games have been introduced, which are aimed at fighting against addiction (成瘾) among underage players.
Adult players need to spend most of their time paying attention to work and family, and cannot play games as often as they want. However, underage players have more spare time, but less responsibility and self-control. Children without a clear purpose in life, where there is less family education and school management, might easily become addicted to all kinds of online games and online novels.
The most direct impact of an addiction to online games among underage players is on their psychological (心理) health. According to psychologists, people seriously addicted to games can become anxious, bad tempered, and avoid responsibility.
However, Chinese parents are more worried that their children will lack interest in studying if they become addicted to online games, as academic success is important for students. Additionally, when their children become addicted to such games, most parents do not know how to deal with the situation.
To carry out the new rules to the best effect, more specific issues need to be solved, such as managing foreign online games, ensuring that facial recognition technologies used by games companies have the wanted effect or making sure online game providers can only offer one-hour services to underage players on Saturdays and Sundays. While there are always loopholes (漏洞) in new rules, authorities should act quickly to close them.
There is no doubt that online games have harmful effects on young people. It is not acceptable for a large number of teenagers or those even younger, to become addicted to these games.
1. What’s the purpose of the new rules on online games?A.To raise awareness of Internet safety. |
B.To bring in new computer programs. |
C.To reduce the grown-up user base. |
D.To prevent the teenagers’ addiction. |

C.How to control the service time of online game providers. |
D.How to invent a facial recognition game for young players. |

Having been teaching anthropology (人类学) at Dartmouth College for 15 years, I still remember the day when I first encountered the book Margaret Mead’s Coming of Age in Samoa, a very important book on the study of the social and cultural development of peoples.
When I was fourteen, I earned money in the summer by cutting lawns, and within a few weeks I had built up a body of customers. I got to know people by the flowers they planted, by the things they lost in the grass or stuck in the ground on purpose. I learned something about the measure of my neighbors by their preferred method of payment: by the job, by the month—or not at all.
Mr. Ballou fell into the last category, and he always had a reason why. On one day, he had no change for a fifty, on another he was simply out when I knocked on his door. Still, except for the money, he was a nice enough old guy, always waving his hat when he’d seen me from a distance. Sure, I kept track of the total, but I didn’t worry about the amount too much.
Then, one late afternoon in mid-July, the hottest time of the year, I was walking by his house and he opened the door, mentioned me to come inside. The hall was cool, shaded, and it took my eyes a minute to adjust to the dim light.
“I owe you,” Mr. Ballou, “but...”
I thought I’d save him the trouble of thinking of a new excuse. “No problem. Don’t worry about it.”
“The bank made a mistake in my account,” he continued, ignoring my words. “It will be cleared up in a day or two. But in the meantime I thought perhaps you could choose one or two volumes for a down payment.”
He gestured toward the walls and I saw that books were stacked (堆放) everywhere. It was like a library, except with no order to the arrangement.

“Dad,” whispered Tarig. “Are you awake?” Dad opened his eyes. “What’s the matter, son?” Tarig couldn’t sleep and he felt that it was too hot. Maybe there’s a storm coming. All day long he felt like something was about to happen. Dad whispered back to his son, “You could be right. Go back to bed, there’s a good boy.”
Tarig shook his head. “I’m going downstairs where it’s cooler. Why don’t you come with me?” Dad refused, saying that he would stay there. Tarig went down the landing. He and his father were alone in the house. His mother and sister had gone to visit relatives. He went into the kitchen and lay on the floor. He felt cooler and fell sleep at last.
Suddenly he awoke with a shock. In the distance he could hear a roar, like thunder. It seemed to be coming closer and closer. The storm must have arrived, just as they expected. But this was no ordinary storm. Within seconds the whole house began to shake. The vase fell off the shelves with a crash. Tarig could feel the floor moving beneath him. What on earth was happening? He jumped to his feet and tried to turn on the light. It didn’t work. He reached the back door, but just then came aloud cracking noise. Next moment a pile of bricks came down around him. A terrible choking(窒息的) smell filled the air.
At last the dust cleared. Tarig was amazed to find that he was still alive. The framework of the doorway must have saved him. He called out, “Dad? Dad, are you all right?”
No answer. But he heard a rescue dog barking. He struggled to know what was going on outside, but he couldn’t move. Maybe someone was approaching here. “Are they my family? Or my relatives?”

In the fall of 2013, I was in fourth grade and my brother Mitch was in second. When many students had puppies, of course we wanted one too!
“Mom, can we get a puppy?” I begged her.
“Well,” she said, “They’re a lot of work, so maybe when you are older.”
“But I’m already ten. I’m old enough to look after a puppy,” I said confidently.
“Yes, we should get a dog!” Echoed Mitch. “Everyone else at school has a puppy,” he exaggerate (夸张). Then mom had to repeat what she had just said: we could get a dog when we were a little bit older. Both Mitch and I were disappointed.
The next day, before getting ready for school, we ran into the kitchen, where mom was preparing breakfast, and packing our lunches for school. In one voice, Mitch and I said, “We are a little bit older. Can we get a dog now?” Mom smiled and said, “We will talk about it tonight with your dad, now go get dressed!” We ran quickly into our room and got ready for school, anxious to get the day over so we could talk about the puppy we were going to get.
That afternoon, as soon as Mitch and I got home from school, we asked mom once more when we could talk about getting a puppy. Mom reminded us, “We’ll talk about it when your dad gets home from work, okay?” “Okay,” we both said and Mitch followed by asking, “When will dad be home?” Mom told us that dad would be home at about 7 o'clock and that we could talk to him after we got our homework done and all ready for supper.
7 o'clock came super slow. And it was not until 7:05 that I heard the key turn and the door open. I jumped up from the chair, and raced to greet dad at the door.
“Dad!” I exclaimed, “Come on, come to the table so we can decide if we can get a puppy!”
“Okay,” dad said as he came into the kitchen and sat down at the table. Then Mitch and I brought out all the reasons we could think of to persuade dad to be on our side. .

10 . If you could see a movie of your life before you lived it, would you want to live it? Probably not. The excitement of living is that you don't know what's coming.
Sure, it's hard to see the uncertainty(不确定性)in such a positive light when you're out of work, or when you feel like you're failing. But the uncertainty is really another word for the opportunity.
When Allison graduated from Harvard, she had opportunities all over the place but had no idea what she wanted to do. She took a job in consulting(咨询)but she knew she wouldn't stay there. She took the GRE and scored so high that she was able to increase her income by teaching students. Still, she didn't think she wanted to go to graduate school. Allison knew she wasn't doing what she wanted, but she didn't know what she wanted.
She worried. All her friends were going to graduate school or start their own business. She was lost and felt that she would never find anything out.
After six years, many of her friends who went directly to professional(职业的)school had crises when they graduated because they weren't sure if they had picked the right profession. And Allison, by having a general plan in mind, got married, moved to the Midwest, and used her consulting experience to get a great job.
Allison realized that her years spent being lost were actually just a period during which she was finding her way: time well spent, and time we must all take if we're being honest with ourselves.
The only way to lead an interesting life is to face uncertainties and make choices. Otherwise your life is not your own—it is a path someone else has chosen. Moments of uncertainty are when you create your life, when you become who you are.
Uncertainties usually begin with a job hunt, but they don't end there. Every new role we take on means another round of uncertainty. Instead of fearing them, we are supposed to find some new ways to deal with uncertainties.
1. What can be inferred from the first two paragraphs?A.Being out of work is a sad thing. |
B.The uncertainty is what makes life interesting. |
C.Life in a film is more exciting than life in reality. |
D.Opportunity never appears when we need it. |
A.Doubtful. | B.Sad. |
C.Regretful. | D.Satisfied. |
A.Ways to deal with uncertainties. |
B.The role the uncertainty plays in life. |
C.The reason why people fear uncertainties. |
D.The one is to blame for uncertainties. |
A.Giving definitions. | B.Giving examples. |
C.Deciding the changes in space order. | D.Making comparisons. |
