The Girl Who Never Talked

I never really felt like I fit in. I was a freshman in high school and my only close friend was Bella, whom I had known since kindergarten. Bella is and will always be one of my best friends and we often play together. However,   she had other close friends too, but I didn't. I was on the volleyball team, and on the court I knew exactly who I was and where I was supposed to be. I loved all of my teammates, but when we were sitting in the stands before and after games I would just sit there quietly, totally unsure of myself.

At school, no one spoke to me and I didn't know how to get along with them. It seems like the only time anyone talked to me was just to jokingly say, "You are so quiet!... do you ever talk?" I wanted to talk, but I just couldn't find the words. I never felt like I knew what to say in a big group of people. All of these made me upset.

One Saturday after our game, Bella was supposed to come over and spend the night at my house. We always had a lot of fun together. I wished that I could talk to the other girls the way I talked to her. But before we left the gym that day, some of the other volleyball girls invited her to go to the movies with them. Since Bella had already made plans with me, they asked if I would like to go to the movies with them too. I agreed and was happy to have a chance to join them.

One of the moms drove us, and we all piled into the back seat of her Suburban-Rhiannon, Destinee, Christine, Bella, and me. I was kind of nervous at first, but once it was just us five, I came out of my shell (壳). For the first time in my life, I really felt like I was a part of the conversation, instead of just sitting there listening. It turned out that I had a lot to say.

3 . How to Teach Your Kids to Enjoy Hiking

Hiking is one of my family's favorite things to do. Ever since my kids were babies, we've been getting out of the house on most weekends to explore and get exercise.

1    I get this question a lot from others who express surprise at my 5-aged children's ability to walk 10 miles or their willingness to climb 2 , 800-foot peaks. They say their children don't even want to walk to school, let alone walk for hours in rough conditions. So what's the secret?

In fact, there is no secret.     2     I don't mean physical drills. I mean building their confidence through experience of hiking with regularity.

I've made a list of the things I think about whenever we head out on a multi-hour hike. This list has expanded over the years, as I've learned what works and what doesn't.     3     But for anyone starting out hiking with kids, I recommend you keep these suggestions in mind.

Eat before you leave and carry food and water.     4     That way you avoid kids complaining about being hungry within a few minutes of starting.

Show them a route map. Kids like knowing where they are in the world, and maps are perfect for helping them understand that. I always take some time before we leave to show them where we are and where we're headed. Point out landmarks they will see. Talk about how long it will take.     5

Invite another family to join you, especially one whose kids know how to hike, too. Having company will motivate all of the children to push forward.

A.How do we benefit from hiking?
B.But how can we manage to do it?
C.And I'd like to share my list with you.
D.So they don't ask me, " Are we there yet?"
E.Not every family's list will look the same.
F.It's just years of training that gets them to this point.
G.We usually have a quick bite before we set off.

5 . The first year of Beth Walker's quest for a zero-waste lifestyle, the rubbish in her life wouldn't have filled a wastepaper basket. But now she's stopped keeping track.

Her journey began after a talk by eco-group The Rubbish Trip in 2017. Like most people, she thought recycling was enough to save the planet from drowning in plastic.

But the reality is that most packaging isn't accepted by recycling companies and the plastic in our oceans is still snowing.

Nowadays, Beth's belief is to refuse, repair, and reuse. She refuses to buy anything that comes in a packet. Local bakeries and butcheries, she found, would happily provide food in her own container.

Then she moved to Wellington, and things got a bit harder. Many bulk (散装) food stores were only open during work hours, and she gratefully turned to the regional shopping guides put out by The Rubbish Trip.

She took every chance to show off her "take everywhere bag " , which contains a cloth for hand drying and cleaning,a keep cup, and a container.

Most importantly, she says, it's a privilege (荣耀) to make these choices. But she's cautious not to push her ideas down people's throats. "It's what's sustainable for you personally," she said.

Most rewarding was seeing the effect on those around her. Her dad proudly told anyone who would listen how his daughter was going waste-free. Her flat mates also agreed to go waste-free when cooking for the flat and to remote the bin from the kitchen. And every plastic container they brought into the house was another for Beth's collection.

1. What made Beth choose a zero-waste lifestyle?
A.A speech she listened to.B.Other students' influence.
C.The products of poor quality.D.The lack of recycling factories.
2. Which is Beth trying to avoid?
A.Reusing a paper bag.B.Relying on recycling companies.
C.Repairing a broken tool.D.Refusing objects in a packet.
3. Why did Beth show off her "take everywhere bag"?
A.To influence others.B.To show her kindness.
C.To prove her wealth.D.To highlight her privilege.
4. What was her flatmates' attitude towards Beth's behavior?
A.Mixed.B.Unconcerned.
C.Supportive.D.Unclear.

A few weeks ago I was out with my family at the opening of a new playground in our community. The advertisements were put up,     1    (state) there would be coffee available and activities for children, and I was convinced that it was a good idea for us to attend. So after we settled in, and found a place for the kids         2    (play) in, I headed over to the coffee station.

I     3    (break) my reusable coffee cup several days before,     4     I knocked off a table onto a hard floor, so I didn’t have anything with me. Feeling       5     (guilt) that I might need to use a throwaway cup, I was delighted to see they were using good old ceramic(陶瓷的) coffee cups that are     6    (rare) seen today. After we finished, the cups went into a big container where they would     7    (wash) later. What a fantastic way of solving the problem of reusable cups! 8 . The development and testing of self-driving car technology has seen major progress but engineers are working on other kinds of autonomous vehicles too — including some built for water.

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are leading one such project. It aims to create boats to transport goods and people along waterways of Amsterdam and explore how autonomous boats can make life in Amsterdam more streamlined. The Dutch capital has been called the world’s “most watery city” because of its large network of canals which affects daily life and industry there; convenience of citizens’ life and levels of productivity rely on water vehicles greatly.

The engineers centered past efforts on the first autonomous boats designed to transport small goods. But their latest creation, the Roboat II, can also carry passengers. It measures two meters by one meter and weighs about 80 kilograms. A demonstration video of the model showed it carrying two people. The boat is designed to use the sensor-collected data to create and “pilot a path between a series of good points”.

The MIT team is currently developing its third autonomous water vehicle. That boat is expected to be four meters long and is designed to carry up to six passengers. The team says it designed its autonomous system to involve separate boats working together. For example, Roboat II vehicles can link up in larger groups guided by a leader boat. This ability can expand the possibilities of autonomous vehicles meant to transport goods. The team plans to test the vehicles in more noisy waters.

In September, it was announced that an ocean research vehicle called the Mayflower Autonomous Ship would attempt to set sail across the Atlantic without a captain or crew on board. The 15-meter ship will take the same path across the Atlantic as the 1620 Mayflower. The builders of the new Mayflower say they hope it can be used in the future to travel and research parts of oceans that are too difficult or dangerous for people to reach.

1. What does the underlined word “streamlined” in paragraph 2 mean?

A.It is much smaller in size.B.It can connect separate boats.

A.Travel across the Atlantic Ocean.
B.Improve transportation in Amsterdam.
C.Get through more noisy conditions.
D.Replace humans for tough exploration.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.Key roles of autonomous boats in Amsterdam.
B.The development of MIT’s autonomous boats.
