On the afternoon of last Friday, the English speech competition, organized by our English club, was held in our meeting hall. It begun at 3:00 p.m. and Mr. Lee, our leading English teacher, gave an inspired opening speech. Then two students started to host the competition with both English and Chinese. Fifteen students were attended the competition and each gave an excellent English speech. If the competition finished, the competitors were ranked and prizes were presented to the first sixth speakers. The competition has received positively comments from students and teachers. They both believed that it could encourage more students show interest in English learning.

4 . Curtin University research has found a simple and affordable method to determine which chemicals and types of metals are best used to store and supply energy, in a breakthrough for any battery-run devices and technologies relying on the fast and reliable supply of electricity, including smart phones and tablets.
Lead author Associate Professor Simone Ciampi from Curtin's School of Molecular and Life Sciences said this easy, low-cost method of determining how to produce and keep the highest energy charge in a capacitor(电容器), could be of great benefit to all scientists, engineers and start-ups looking to solving the energy storage challenges of the future.
"All electronic devices require an energy source. While a battery needs to be recharged over time, a capacitor can be charged instantly because it stores energy by separating charged ions(离子), found in ionic liquids,” Ciampi said.
There are thousands of types of ionic liquids, a type of "liquid salt", and until now, it was difficult to know which would be best suited for use in a capacitor. What our team has done is designing a quick and easy test, able to be performed in a basic lab, which can measure both the ability to store charge when a solid electrode touches a given ionic liquid-a simple capacitor—as well as the stability of the device when it's charged.
“The simplicity of this test means anyone can apply it without the need for expensive equipment. Using this method, our research found that charging the device for 60 seconds produced a full charge, which did not ‘leak’(渗漏)and begin to diminish for at least four days,” Mr Belotti said.
The next step is to use this new screening method to find ionic liquid with an even longer duration in the charged state and larger energy density.

5 . Restricting meals to early in the day did not affect weight among overweight adults with prediabetes or diabetes(糖尿病), according to a research presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2020.
“We have wondered for a long time if when one eats during the day affects the way the body uses and stores energy,” said study author Nisa M. Maruthur, associate professor of medicine in Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. “Most previous studies have not controlled the number of calories, so it wasn't clear if people who ate earlier just ate fewer calories. In this study, the only thing we changed was the time of eating in the day.”
Maruthur and colleagues followed 41 overweight adults in a 12-week study. Most participants(参与者)(90%)were African American women with prediabetes or diabetes, and average age of 59 years. Twenty-one of the adults followed a time-restricted eating pattern, limiting eating to specific hours of the day and ate 80% of their calories before 1 pm. The remaining 20 participants ate at usual times during a 12-hour window, consuming half of their daily calories after 5 pm for the entire 12 weeks. All participants consumed the same pre-prepared, healthy meals provided for the study. Weight and blood pressure were measured at the beginning of the study;then at 4 weeks, 8 weeks and 12 weeks.
The analysis found that people in both groups lost weight and had decreased blood pressure no matter when they ate. "We thought that the time-restricted group would lose more weight,” Maruthur said. “Yet that didn't happen. We did not see any difference in weight loss for those who ate most of their calories earlier versus later in the day. We did not see any effects on blood pressure either.”
The researchers are now collecting more detailed information on blood pressure recorded over 24 hours, and they will bring this information together with the results of a study on the effects of time-restricted feeding on blood sugar, insulin(胰岛素)and other hormones and making analyses on the data. "Together, these findings will help us to more fully understand the effects of time-restricted eating on cardiometabolic(心血管代谢)health," Maruthur said.

9 . Taking a regular afternoon nap(小睡)may bring better mental functions(心理机能)in old people, a study has found. Researchers found sleeping in the afternoon has something to do with better memory in the ageing Chinese population.
The study, published in online journal General Psychiatry, examined the sleep patterns of 2,214 healthy people aged 60 and over in several large cities in China, including Beijing and Shanghai. Of those who took part in the study, 1,534 took a regular afternoon nap of between five minutes and two hours, while 680 did not.
Participants(参与者)in the study were asked how often they napped during the week, with answers from once a week to every day. The average length of nighttime sleep was around 6.5 hours in both groups, though no information was about how long they sleep.
All participants took part in a dementia(痴呆)screening test to check their mental functions across a number of areas The researchers found important differences in memory, with scores higher among the napping group.
“In addition to reducing sleepiness, mid-day naps offer a lot of benefits such as strengthening memory, preparation for following learning, and emotional stability, but these effects were not observed in all cases,” the researchers said.
However, the researchers did point out the research could not prove whether afternoon naps put off the dementia of older people, or whether they might be a sign of dementia. The researchers plan to continue their research to understand the details of these connections, and hope to publish more work in this field in the future.

10 . When she was 2 years old, Blosberg’s dad was diagnosed (诊断) with a serious illness that disrupts the central nervous system — MS (多发性硬化症). But 13 years later, her eyes started moving around rapidly and uncontrollably and her skin became extremely sensitive. The symptoms she was experiencing felt “familiar” because they really looked a lot like the things that her dad was experiencing.
After Blosberg was officially diagnosed with MS in 2011, she realized she needed to connect with other teenagers who had MS and truly understood what she was going through. “I knew there had to be other kids out there, and I wanted to connect with them,” she says. Blosberg then decided to create a Facebook page for young people with MS and obtained the help of the National MS Society. “If you find anyone else young, let me know,” Blosberg recalls saying to the organization. “I want to talk to them. I want them to know that they’re not alone.”
MS is often considered “an adult illness”. Blosberg’s Facebook page was her way of bringing young people with MS together. But she decided to take things one step further by founding a nonprofit, the MS Monkey, that supports children and teenagers who have been diagnosed with the illness. Through it all, Blosberg says her entire family has been proud of her — especially her father. “He knows what it’s like to live with MS,” she shares. “He’s my role model, though. I grew up watching him live with MS and not let MS get in the way.”
