Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day, Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a corner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let's go and see!”
“No,” said Henry. “Let us go quietly home and not meddle with (插手) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward (懦夫), and afraid to go,” said Robert, and he ran. Henry went straight home and in the afternoon went to school as usual.
But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him together. Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored (忽视) the other boys' laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Everyday after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.
A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.

4 . To figure out what you want to do, maybe you can do what you know best: read everything; find the most useful tips and start putting a plan into action. There are some tips for you to think about what to do with your life.
It may feel impossible to predict what exactly you’ll be doing next, but what you can do is connecting the dots and looking back. Find the common thread. What did you do?
Schedule it in your calendar and give yourself the space to think. You’ll make progress even if it’s just a few hours every other week.
Seek knowledge, not results.
If you focus on the excitement of discovery, your motivation will always be fueled. If you focus only on results, your motivation will be like weather - it will die the minute you hit a storm.

Looking at her worn-out sneakers (运动鞋), Sarah felt embarrassed (尴尬的)going to school wearing them.
“What’s the matter, Sarah? Is there something wrong with the food?” her mother asked.
Sarah, in a high voice, shouted, “I am sick of these shoes! I am no longer wearing these to my school! Do you know how embarrassing it is?”
Meghan, (Sarah’s mother) was a single mother working in a nearby town cafe. She explained, “Right now, we’re on a tight budget(预算很紧). I’ll make sure to get you a new pair next month.”
Sarah picked up her schoolbag and walked to school, giving her mother a dissatisfied look.
The school was going to organize a sports competition and Sarah was filled out the form for a 100-meter race.
When one of her friends saw this, she asked Sarah if she was certain about running the race. Sarah didn’t understand what her friend meant.
”Dear, if you have a new pair of shoes, then it’s fine. But if you choose to wear the ones you are wearing now, I’m afraid you will lose the race!“ the friend said, pointing at Sarah’s shoes. Sarah simply nodded and returned to her classroom without saying anything.
Later that day, on her way home, Sarah realized she hadn’t eaten her lunch, so she stopped at a bus stop to finish it.
When she began eating, she noticed that a child was standing next to her in poor clothes. Sarah knew the kid needed that sandwich that she was eating since the kid stared at her and then at her food.
Sarah handed the sandwich to the child, who ran up to her, excitedly got the sandwich from Sarah’s hand and began eating it. After finishing the sandwich, the child thanked Sarah, saying, ”I haven’t had such a tasty sandwich in a long time. My father is a cleaner in a house down the street and my mother is a patient at a hospital. Oh, and my name is Sam.”

9 . We’re lucky to live in an age when the sum total of human knowledge is pretty available at the click of a button. We’ ve never had access to so much information.
Watch out for confirmation prejudice(偏见).
Acknowledge small differences. In life, most situations are varying and complicated. Admitting that can enrich the way that we view the world. For example, what colour is the sky? Well, the obvious answer is blue. But at sunrise or sunset, it can be red. On a cold misty morning, white or gray.
Practise intellectual humility (谦逊). One approach to, well, arguing, is to let go of the idea of being “right”. Or at least seriously consider that you might actually be wrong.
Engaging in critical thinking isn’t as fun as picking up a pitchfork, or feeling like you’re fundamentally right. But in the long run, it leads to a more curious, educated and harmonious society, which is the biggest win of all.
A.Avoid mistakes |
B.Check your sources |
C.We all enjoy feeling like we’re right |
D.But not all of what’s out there is quite what it seems |
E.So pay attention to differences in many situations |
F.So don’t rush to decide, and be actively prepared to change your mind |
G.Putting yourself into the other person’s shoes can have more fruitful outcomes |
An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year -old highly educated son. Suddenly a crow (乌鸦) perched (栖息) on their window.
The father asked his son, “what is this?” The son replied, “It is a crow.”
After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What is this?” The son said, “Father , I have just now told you, it is a crow!”
After a little while, the old father again asked his son for the third time, “What is this?”
At this time some expression of irritation (恼怒) was felt in the son’s tone when he said to his father with a rebuff (生硬回绝) . “It’s a crow , a crow.” A little while later, the father again asked his son the fourth time, “ What is this?”
This time, the son shouted at his father, “ Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’. Are you not able to understand this?’
A little while later the father went to his room and came back with an old tattered (发皱的) diary, which he had maintained since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page. When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary:
“Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I did not at all feel annoyed but I rather felt love for my innocent son.
