3 . Social anxiety is a mental disorder that is often misunderstood. It’s not just as simple as feeling shy or not wanting to engage in big groups.
Generally speaking, the physical symptoms (症状) of anxiety include an increase in heart rate, muscle tension and dizziness (头晕). In all of these cases, it’s important to take a minute and slow down your breathing to help you gain control back of your body.
Challenge your thoughts
People with social anxiety often have negative thoughts when in a social situation. Perhaps you’re worried you might trip over, or laugh or cough at the wrong time.
Set goals
The idea of goal setting is not only to decide where you want to end up, but to learn about where you are now. In this way, you can clearly see your progress. Remember though, never compare yourself to others in terms of social success.
Say yes
Maybe you’ve gotten into the habit of saying “no” to everything you get invited to. But it’s time to start saying “yes”! If you’re invited to do something social, don’t turn it down and accept the invitation.

4 . If you see a young person in their early 20s driving a car in any Western city, you would not normally give them a second glance. However, in Christchurch, a city in New Zealand’s South Island, people do look suspiciously at anyone under 20 in a car. What they are really looking for is a yellow sticker on the car windows. The reason: a new scheme (方案) is targeting car thefts, using a yellow sticker programme.
Half of all car thefts in the quiet city are committed by people under 25, police say, and each year vehicles worth 6.2 million disappear “for good”. Police say that car theft is now so worrying that if a good idea “comes along”, they’ll use it. They say one has. It is called the Under 25 Scheme.
Because of the young age of car thieves in general, police invite owners whose cars are not normally driven by people under 25 to place a yellow triangle on front or back car windows. If police see anyone under 25 driving the car with a yellow triangle sticker on the window, they can stop the car and check the driver.
Police now say it has worked well enough over the last 18 months for them to test it nationally. Robin Scott, a Christchurch crime prevention officer says, “For the 13 months until last October we had 42 fewer cars stolen in Christchurch than the previous year and only eight carrying stickers were stolen.”
Meanwhile, youth advocates in Christchurch feel offended with it. Sam Fisher, a city communications employee, says, “If you divide people up like this, you’re going down the road to asking, ‘Who are the thieves in the community? What is the color of their skin? Where do they live? What’s their gender?’ so you target young black males living in a suburb. That’s the problem you end up with.”
As for the police, the real issues seem to be finding a sponsor to pay for the whole sticker scheme.

There are many things in senior middle school that I still remember clearly. I studied three years in a country school, which is faraway. However, it has a good environment and strict but kind teachers, so I loved the school and all my teachers very much.
One Friday, just as we began to read books in reading class at our desks, our teacher, Mrs. Hill, said that she needed to be out of the classroom for a few minutes. She asked the class to read in silence while she was gone. And she said that those who didn’t read books in silence would have to be punished when she returned. It was well-known that Mrs. Hill was strict. So we had to be on our best behaviour.
But that Friday, Mrs. Hill hadn’t been gone for ten seconds before some students in the classroom started to talk. From one corner of the room I heard Josh ask Nick, “Can I trade my candies for your toy?” At the other end of the room I heard Samantha tell Kayla, “Let’s sit together on the bus for the museum field trip tomorrow.” And so it went all around me, until about half of the students communicated with each other.
After a while, I, too, forgot about Mrs. Hill’s instructions. I turned back and asked my friend Liza, “Can I borrow your storybook and keep it for a day?” As soon as the words were out of my mouth, Mrs. Hill walked into the classroom. The whole class returned to silence immediately. And we were full of fear.
Mrs. Hill slowly looked around the classroom and said, “If you were talking while I was gone, then please stand up.” The guilt (内疚) suddenly weighed heavily on me. “I shouldn’t have talked while she was not in the classroom. And now I should be honest and admit my mistake bravely. This is what my parents have always told me.” I thought. Then, I summoned up (鼓起) my courage to stand up, worried about the punishment that waited for me. Then I looked around.

Besides “wow” and “great”, what else would you say when flying over the Earth in space? Samantha Cristoforetti, the first Italian female astronaut in space, posted several lines of a famous ancient Chinese composition on Twitter to share her joy.
She first wrote in Chinese, and then attached an accurate translation of the lines in both Italian and English to help more people understand. “Looking up, I see the immensity of the cosmos (宇宙); bowing my head, I look at the multitude of the world. The gaze flies, the heart expands, the joy of the senses can reach its peak, and indeed, this is true happiness,” it says. Two days before she landed on Earth, the beauty of space and Chinese literature resonated(共鸣) on her Twitter account. Before long, her posts went viral on Twitter with thousands of retweets, likes and replies.
The text she quoted is from the Preface to Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion (《兰亭集序》), a Chinese calligraphy masterpiece by Wang Xizhi (303-361) of the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420). She also attached three photos taken in space of China’s Bohai Bay and the day-night view of Beijing. “The poem and views are both magnificent as well as healing. If everyone could enjoy the same sight, a lot of pain in the world would be ‘dissipated’,” one user comments.
As the first Italian female astronaut in space, Cristoforetti carried out her first space mission on Nov 23, 2014. In 2022, she started the second mission in April and returned to Earth on Friday night after a 127-day stay in orbit.
Cristoforetti has also been active in Sino-European cooperation in the field of manned spaceflight. She was a working group member with Chinese counterparts to define and implement cooperation in the field of astronaut operations. When not traveling for work, she is an eager reader and has a great passion for languages. Speaking clear Chinese, Cristoforetti once told the media that the teams from China and Europe were working very well together in the field of astronaut training.

9 . In 1990, Hal Donaldson was 23 years old, fresh out of college and found himself in Calcutta, India, where he was asked to interview Mother Teresa.
Donaldson says about the great woman famed for feeding the hungry, “She wasn’t wearing shoes and her ankles were swollen. She sat down with me and was very polite.” After the interview, Mother Teresa asked him, “What are you doing to help the poor?” Donaldson admitted that he was young and wasn’t focused on helping others. With a smile on her face, Mother Teresa said, “Everyone can do something.”
Those words deeply struck Donaldson and forced him to face hard truths about himself.
Hal Donaldson grew up in the San Francisco Bay area. When he was 12 years old, his parents were hit by a drunk driver; his father died, and his mother was seriously injured. To make ends meet, they went on welfare. Donaldson says, “I had holes in my shoes and clothes. When you’re teased at school for that, you just want to escape.”
He managed to do just that. Donaldson got into college and turned his focus to making money for himself. He says, “I was just trying to find my way out of insignificance.” However, it’s easy to overlook others along the way. I was the guy that would see a homeless person and cross the street, so I didn’t have to confront (面对) him. My focus was on climbing to the top instead of helping those trying to climb with me.
Donaldson returned home from India with a different thought. He traveled to eight cities in America and stayed on the streets and listened to stories of the homeless. “My heart broke,” he says. “I knew I could no longer just live for myself.”
Inspired by Mother Teresa’s words and the stories he’d heard across America, Donaldson loaded a pick up truck with $300 worth of groceries and handed them out to anyone who needed help. In 1994, Donaldson created the nonprofit organization, Convoy for Hope, which works with communities across America and around the world. Their work focuses on feeding children, women’s empowerment, helping farmers and disaster services.
