文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要讲的是科学家们发现,随着座头鲸数量的增长,它们发出唱歌声音的数量越来越少。

2 . Scientists discovered that fewer humpback whales made the singing noises, as their population grew. “It was getting more difficult to actually find singers,” marine biologist Rebecca Dunlop in Brisbane said. She added, “When there were fewer of them, there was a lot of singing-now that there are lots of them, no need to be singing so much.”

Eastern Australia’s humpback whales came close to disappearing in the 1960s. With the end of commercial whaling (捕鲸), the population began to regrow, climbing to about 27,000 whales by 2015. That number is near estimated pre-whaling levels. As the density (密度) of whales increased, their singing behaviors changed. While 2 in 10 males made crying noises in 2004, 10 years later the number had dropped to 1 in 10, Dunlop said.

The team’s study appeared in a recent issue of Nature Communications Biology. Dunlop said she thinks singing played a big part in bringing in mates when populations severely declined. When humpbacks live in denser populations, males looking for mates also have to deal with competing whales.

Boris Worm, an ocean biologist, was not involved in the research. “As animal populations recover, they change their behavior-they have different cries,” Worm said. The research suggests the seas are still noisy with humpback whale sounds.

Many humpbacks seek to bring in mates with a combination of singing and physical movements, the study notes. The large increase in the humpback population during the study period provided valuable data about changes in the animals’ behavior and they must have been singers long before whaling reduced their numbers, said Simon Ingram. But the new study demonstrates (证明) how necessary their complex and beautiful songs were to their survival and recovery, he added.

1. Which may make humpback whales sing in the discovery?
A.The power of waves.B.The use of microphone.
C.The feeling of loneliness.D.The increase of their numbers.
2. What does Paragraph 2 mainly say about humpback whales?
A.Their sudden disappearance.B.Their sharp rise in numbers.
C.Their being well protected.D.Their change in behaviors.
3. What does the underlined word “declined” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Increased.B.Dropped.C.Climbed.D.Recovered.
4. Which does Simon Ingram agree?
A.Humpbacks’ behaviors have never changed.
B.Humpbacks’ numbers increased by whaling.
C.Humpbacks’ singing noises are important.
D.Humpbacks’ singing will disappear soon.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一种治疗阿尔茨海默病的新药Leqembi。

7 . This year brought some exciting news for patients of Alzheimer’s disease and their families. Leqembi, a new drug for the disease made through a US-Japanese partnership, has been available in a pilot zone in China’s Hainan province since September.

Being a currently uncurable disease, Alzheimer’s disease damages or even kills nerve cells (神经细胞) in the brain. Damaged cells can cause breakdowns in various parts of the brain, resulting in memory loss, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. A kind of plaque (斑块) made up of protein is the “suspect”. Plaques build up in the spaces between nerve cells, which can break up the communication between cells. Although most people develop such plaques as they age, Alzheimer’s patients tend to have more, beginning in the areas responsible for memory.

This July, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) fully approved Leqembi. It became the first Alzheimer’s drug to receive FDA approval in 20 years. Leqembi is designed to “remove plaques that have already formed and prevents them from forming”, US medical expert Jon LaPook told CBS News. Therefore, the drug can only be effective in those who are in the early stage of the disease. Patients would also need to have evidence of plaques in their brain, which can be detected through brain scans or blood tests.

Sadly, this drug is not a cure. According to the FDA’s press release, after a 79-week trial on human patients, the drug could slow but not reverse (逆转) the development of the disease and its related effect on memory. What it offers is a way for patients with Alzheimer’s to maintain their ability to live a more or less normal life for longer.

According to the World Health Organization, at least 55 million people are living with dementia (痴呆) worldwide, with Alzheimer’s disease being the most common cause. As scientists make more effort, there’s growing hope that they can one day create a world where Alzheimer’s disease no longer affects millions of families like it used to.

1. What makes Alzheimer’s patients excited?
A.A US-Japanese partnership.B.Damaged nerve cells in the brain.
C.A new drug for Alzheimer’s disease.D.A kind of plaque in the memory area.
2. In what way is Leqembi effective in Alzheimer’s?
A.It can detect the plaque in patients’ brain.
B.It can reverse the development of disease.
C.It can be used in the late stage of the disease.
D.It can remove plaques and prevent their forming.
3. What is the author’s attitude toward curing Alzheimer’s disease?
A.Doubtful.B.Uncaring.C.Positive.D.Negative.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Progress in Treating Alzheimer’s Disease
B.A Promising Treatment for Alzheimer’s Disease
C.The Impact of Alzheimer’s Disease on Patients
D.The Role of Plaque in Alzheimer’s Disease

10 . In Los Angeles, California, where temperatures tend to stay warm year-round, you can feel a significant difference in heat when you’re along the coast or outside the city compared to when you’re in highly-populated parts of the city. This phenomenon, known as the urban heat island effect, can make daytime temperatures in highly-populated areas 1°F to 7°F warmer than nearby areas. Los Angeles is working to settle this issue by applying a special paint on 1 million square feet of roads in the city.

The GAF Cool Community Project, an initiative by roofing company GAF, has painted roads, parking lots, and even playgrounds in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Pacoima with the solar-reflective paint. GAF partnered with local organizations, governments and scientists for the project.

“Pacoima is one of the hottest parts of Los Angeles and hasn’t gotten the kind of investment a lot of other communities have,” said Jeff Terry, who led the project. “Hopefully we’re going to make this place a little bit more livable for the residents.”

The paint uses Invisible Shade, a coating created by GAF-owned company, Street Bond. Invisible Shade has additives (添加剂) that reflect visible and infrared (红外线的) light to reduce heat. The coating is available in 14 colors or can be customized. While in most areas of Pacoima, the applied coatings are gray, the initiative partnered with a local artist to create unique patterns for some areas, like playgrounds, parking lots, and a basketball court.

“My feet do feel cooler. Yes! You can instantly feel the difference on the soles (脚底) of your feel,” said Melanie Torres, a Pacoima resident. “I think it’s great. Pacoima is one of the largest hot zones in LA so we were fortunate to be selected.”

The initiative will monitor the neighborhood temperatures over the next tow years to determine its effectiveness. If successful, more reflective coatings may be applied in other neighborhoods.
