Martial arts refer to any of the traditional forms of Asian self-defence or combat that use physical skill and collaboration     1     weapons. There are different forms of martial arts such as Kungfu and Taekwondo. As a martial arts     2     (enthusiasm), I find it fun and exciting. They have had an effect of socially     3     (empower) me and have improved my health and wellbeing. Apart from this, I have observed that traditional martial arts can play a crucial role in our daily lives once we     4     (equip) with the necessary self-defence skills. Of late, domestic violence and abuse cases     5     (increase) globally and in most cases, the victims are women and youngers, of     6     most are usually in a disadvantaged position as the     7     (major) of them possess little to no self-defence skills. It can therefore be useful for people to learn and practice martial arts to be able to physically defend     8     (they). I feel martial arts have a role to play in the civil and modern society as they are     9     safer option of self-defence, compared to using weapons as defence mechanisms. Under any form of physical attack, I find traditional martial arts as perhaps one of the     10     (cheap) to fight perpetrator.

3 . The days that make us happy make us wise.

When I first read this line by England's Poet Laureate, it _____________   me.   What   did Masefield mean? Without thinking about it much, I had always assumed that the _______ was true. But his serious assurance was ________. I was deeply attracted by it.

Slowly, I seemed to ________ his meaning and realized the wisdom that happiness makes possible lies in clear perception(洞察力), not _______ by anxiety nor dimmed by despair and boredom, and without the blind _______ caused by fear.

Active happiness---not mere satisfaction or _______---often comes suddenly, like an April shower or the unfolding of a bud. Then you discover what kind of wisdom has ____________ it. Amazingly, in your eyes, the grass is greener; bird songs are sweeter; the _________   of your friends are more understandable, and more forgivable. Happiness is like a pair of eyeglasses correcting your ________ vision.

Nor are the __________ of happiness limited to what is near around you. Unhappy, with your thoughts focused on your emotional woes (痛苦) , your vision is cut short as though blocked by a wall. Happy, the wall _________.

Consequently, the long vision is there for the seeing. The ground at your feet, the world about you---people, thoughts, emotions, pressures---are now ____________ a larger scene. Everything covers a fairer _________. Everything around you, whether it is encouraging or frustrating, no longer seems such a big deal. And here is the beginning of _________.

With about half of the vast country covered in wilderness, China is the world’s third most species-rich country. Therefore, China’s     1    (achieve) in biodiversity conservation and wilderness protection are important to the future of global biodiversity conservation.

The vital biodiversity,     2    (combine) with a large population, has led the government to reconsider its protected area system and transform some wilderness areas such as the rainforest in Hainan     3    formal national parks.     1     (work) on building sites for over 20 years, Hua Shankui, 59, had never imagined he’d become an expert on planting grass. But this was     2     happened on a construction site he’s working on in Wuhan, Hubei Province.

The 18-hectare construction site of the Huashan section of Wuhan Metro Line 19 is situated near an ecological reserve. Efforts had to be made     3     (ensure) that the local environment would not be compromised. To reduce pollution, using dust nets to cover bare soil is a normal practice on construction sites. However, a     4     (decide) was made at the Huashan site to plant grass on the soil, a more eco-friendly method.

When Hua     5     (give) the task of leading a grass planting team, he knew nothing about gardening. The first question facing     6     team was what kind of grass they should plant. Hua turned to local gardeners,     7     recommended carpet grass, a species     8     (common) planted in urban landscaping.

However, months     9     planting the grass, few seeds of carpet grass grew roots as the soil at the site contains too many small stones. He tried different varieties of grass. After conducting     10     (repeat) experiments on a small piece of land, Hua found rye grass (黑麦草) to be the right species. Hua and his colleagues started to plant rye grass. Four months later, the piece of brown soil was covered in green grass, adding life to the construction site while cleaning the air.

Bird-watching is one of the activities offered by the public benefit program “Park Classes”, which     1     (launch) in the city of Wuhan in 2016.

The program aims to help raise the awareness of environmental     2     (protect) among primary and middle school students, and to help     3     (child) get close to nature through a variety of outdoor activities developing their ability to explore and take action.

Among the courses on offer     4     (be) the restoration of small and micro wetlands,     5     requires a considerable amount of hands-on practice. Under the guidance of tutors, students are required     6     (conduct) research on a 500-square-meter wetland in a city park, and then take action to promote     7     (it) restoration.

Last summer, a team of 15 students conducted a physical examination of the biodiversity of     8     micro-wetland in Wuhan’s Houxianghe park. During their field research, the team found that there were few fish in the micro-wetland. After further study, they concluded that the problem is     9     (large) due to the lack of submerged (水下的) and floating plants, which kept fish and amphibians     10     reproducing in large groups.

The activity was meaningful and the students learned a lot and they are expecting to take more chances like this.

9 . The first traffic lights in the United States were installed because of an increase in traveller on the road in the 1920s. Worried about accidents, towns and cities installed traffic towers to help the flow of cars. Officers manned the towers, using whistles and red, green and yellow lights to indicate to drivers when they should stop and go.

Due to the absence of effective traffic signal systems on some streets, it caused risks at intersections. Then, William Potts created the first tricolour, four-directional traffic signal. The very first four-directional traffic light was installed at Woodward Avenue and Fort. But throughout the country, there were still a lot of systems for traffic lights and patterns in place. Since this could end up causing more problems for drivers, the Federal Highway Administration set uniform standards in 1935for all road signs, pavement markings and traffic signals, requiring them to all use red, yellow and green light indicators.

Red is the colour with the longest wavelength; that means that as it travels through air molecules, it gets diffused(扩散)less than other colour, so it can be seen from a greater distance. Yellow has a shorter wavelength than red but a longer wavelength than green. This means that red is visible the furthest away, yellow in the middle and green the least distance away—a helpful advanced warning for needing to slow or stop. But this could be a coincidence. Red meaning stop originated with train warning lights, and it’s not clear whether that was chosen based on wavelength, contrast against green nature or natural association of red with things like blood. It could be a combination of all three!

Back in the 1900s, some stop signs were yellow because it was too hard to see a red sign in a poorly lit area. Eventually, highly reflective materials were developed, and red stop signs were born. Since yellow can be seen well at all times of the day, school zones, some traffic signs and school buses continue to be painted the colour.
