文章大意:这是一篇说明文。据估计,人们每天触摸手机数百次。这意味着细菌有很多机会从我们的手指转移到我们的手机上。文章介绍了一些让手机保持清洁的方法。

1 . It’s been estimated that people touch their cell phones hundreds of times every day. That means plenty of opportunities for germs to move from our fingers to our phones.     1     But a recent study found more than 17,000 bacterial gene copies on the phones of high school students.

One of the worst places to use cell phones is in the bathroom.     2     Studies have found that our mobile phones are much dirtier than toilet seats. Just as an expert puts it, taking a phone into the bathroom and then leaving with it is kind of like going in, not washing your hands and then coming back out.

While many of us wash our hands regularly after going to the bathroom, we seldom consider washing our hands after touching our phones.     3     You can use alcohol-based wipes or sprays to clean your phone regularly. They need to contain at least 70% alcohol to disinfect phone casing s and touch screens. Do it every day if possible. Remember to sanitize (消毒) your phone charger occasionally when you are cleaning your phone.     4

5     Get in the habit of putting your phone away when it’s not in use, then cleaning your hands. When not at home, keep your phone in your pocket or bag. Use a disposable paper list of to-do items, rather than constantly consulting your phone.

Do not share your phone with others if you have not first sanitized it. If children are allowed to play with your phone, sanitize it as soon as possible afterward.

A.How you handle your phone will also be critical.
B.When toilets flush, they spread germs everywhere.
C.So it’s clear that you keep away from your phone.
D.The more germs they collect, the more germs you touch.
E.Wash your hands thoroughly after you’ve finished cleaning.
F.Research has varied on how many germs are on an average phone.
G.Fortunately, there are easy ways to avoid your phone collecting germs.

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道,介绍了科学家通过冷冻的方式来保护珊瑚礁免于灭绝。

3 . Warming seas across the globe are endangering coral reefs, a key ecosystem that supports marine life to live and thrive. As a possible way to save them from extinction, scientists have recently frozen and revived groups of adult corals for the first time, according to a recent study.

Freezing biological materials, or “cryopreserving” them, refers to keeping them in a deep freeze for long periods without affecting the cells viability (活性), according to the Science Times website.

This method usually cools them to very low temperatures, commonly to-196℃. Since cells would normally die at such a low temperature due to the formation of ice inside, scientists need to monitor the freezing rate and choose the freezing medium carefully.

Researchers in the US experimented with freezing pea-sized pieces of a common coral in Hawaii. After removing the microbes on the corals, they sealed the corals in metal containers filled with a chemical solution that partially dehydrated (脱水) them and helped control ice growth.

When the corals reached a temperature of around -200 ℃, the remaining water in the corals solidified into a glassy form. The corals were still alive, with their life-driving functions becoming extremely slow. After being cryopreserved for a few minutes, the researchers pulled the corals out and placed them in warm water. In two minutes, they started consuming oxygen — a sign of them staying alive.

Previously, researchers had already successfully cryopreserved coral larvae (幼虫), according to a study in 2018. However, the larvae can only be collected when corals spawn (产卵), which happens just a few nights each year. “That’s putting a lot of eggs in one basket,” US marine scientist Liza Roger told Science News.

This breakthrough offers more hope to the worlds corals, said Roger. However, there’s more work to be done. A few days after thawing (解冻), the corals became “stressed out” from the process and were killed by the bacteria they normally live in harmony with. The researchers are working on using antibiotics to help them survive for a longer period of time.

1. What happened to the corals when they were cryopreserved?
A.They died temporarily.
B.Their life functions slowed down.
C.They remained alive and unchanged.
D.They fed on microbes in the containers.
2. What does the underlined sentence mean?
A.It is not a reliable solution.
B.It needs a large number of eggs.
C.It holds promise for restoring corals.
D.It requires overly expensive technology.
3. What issue do the researchers still need to address?
A.Finding a suitable freezing medium.
B.Identifying the bacteria on the corals.
C.Expanding the collection of coral larvae.
D.Maintaining the corals health after thawing.
4. What might be the main idea of the passage?
A.Bringing dead corals back to life.B.Freeze and revive coral larvae.
C.Find a way to preserve corals.D.Study the conditions of coral growth.

文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。文章主要讲述了咖啡师Fei Teng制作的一款特色咖啡——咸焦糖摩卡并展望了他为中国咖啡行业发展做出的贡献。

4 . Brewing Up the Best Cup of Coffee

Editor’s note: In the world of coffee, there is a hierarchy (等级) based on brewing (酿制) methods and coffee bean quality. Manual brewing is superior to machine brewing. Italian-style coffee is usually preferred over the American style. At the top of this world, it is specialty coffee (精品咖啡). And becoming a specialty coffee barista (咖啡师) requires specific training. Let’s go to the story of one such barista.

To customers, specialty coffee may be just a simple drink, but for specialty coffee baristas, it is a demanding science. Fei Teng, a 35-year-old barista with 10 years of experience, considers various factors like altitude, climate and grinding (研磨) when making specialty coffee. Fei also has his own principle of developing creative coffee. The Salty Mocha, created by Fei, gained popularity among coffee enthusiasts. “The sea salt neutralizes the sweetness of the mocha, adding layers of flavor to the taste. By introducing innovative changes to classic coffee, it can bring new and wonderful experiences to the taste buds,” Fei told Teens.

Fei majored in fine arts in college but chose to become a coffee apprentice (学徒) after graduation. He began by learning the basics of coffee, including its varieties and roasting levels. Through training and participating in competitions, Fei improved his barista skills, like grinding beans and frothing milk (打奶沫). “Becoming a barista is easy to get started, but difficult to master,” said Fei. To enhance his sensitivity to the quality of coffee beans, Fei tasted a wide variety of coffee, often drinking more than 20 cups a day. That led to diarrhea (腹泻)at times.

“In addition to coffee knowledge, service skills are crucial but often overlooked by baristas,” Fei said. Baristas need to patiently address customer questions and convey the concept behind their coffee in an attractive manner. “Some baristas even create music introductions for their coffee and share them with customers,” added Fei.

“Many view being a barista as a cool job, but actually, it is quite hard and there is a lot of physical labor, like cleaning the cafe,” Fei said. However, despite the challenges, career prospects are promising. A 2023 report reveals that Chinas coffee industry reached 200.7 billion yuan in 2022.

Having dedicated a decade to the coffee industry, Fei plans to continue focusing on specialty coffee and further contribute to the growth of the Chinese coffee sector.

1. What sets the Salty Mocha invented by Fei apart?
A.Its flavor.B.Its popularity.C.Its aroma.D.Its price.
2. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.Why Fei chose to be a barista.B.What Fei learned about coffee.
C.How Fei understood his career.D.How Fei upgraded his skills.
3. What does Fei think of baristas service skills?
A.They determine a baristas success.B.They are more important than basic skills.
C.They require creativity and talent.D.They are frequently ignored.
4. What does Fei want to do?
A.Promote Chinese coffee overseas.B.Establish his own unique cafe.
C.Continue pursuing his barista career.D.Teach people how to make coffee.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了孤独已成为一种紧迫的健康威胁,呼吁各国以及各组织将社会联系作为优先事项。

10 . Tackling lonely emotions

Do you feel lonely? The World Health Organization (WHO) recently addressed loneliness as a pressing health threat.     1

Loneliness is a state of mind marked by feelings of isolation despite wanting social connections. So people who are lonely usually experience the emotional pain of not being connected with others.     2     People who enjoy spending time by themselves continue to maintain positive social relationships that they can return to when they want connection.

Social isolation impacts the health and well-being of all age groups across the world.     3     Between 5 and 15 percent adolescents experience loneliness, but the numbers are likely to be underestimations, said the organization.

Social disconnection in adolescence can lead to poorer education outcomes, since young people who have experienced loneliness in high school are more likely to drop out of university. Lack of social connection carries a risk of early death equivalent to other better-known risk factors such as smoking, obesity and air pollution, or potentially even greater.     4     but previous studies have shown that loneliness has been linked to anxiety and depression and can increase the risk of heart disease by 30 percent. A 2015 study looked at the immune systems of its participants who were identified as lonely. It showed that they tend to have more inflammation(炎症) and less immunity.     5

To tackle this crisis, the WHO launched the Commission on Social Connection, which held its first leadership meeting to outline solutions to build social connections at scale.

A.The following aspects are something concerning how to tackle loneliness.
B.It called for countries and organizations to make social connections a priority.
C.Solitude (独处) on the other hand, is voluntary.
D.It can be a result of feeling stressed due to loneliness.
E.According to the WHO, one in four old people experience social isolation.
F.Loneliness cannot be identified as a fatal emotional factor,
G.Loneliness not only has a far-reaching impact comparable to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day according to a 2017 study.
