2 . Do you think I’m insane?
This question came from Elon Musk near the very end of a long dinner we shared at a high-end seafood restaurant in Silicon Valley. I’d gotten to the restaurant first and settled down with a gin and tonic, knowing Musk would—as ever—be late. After about fifteen minutes, Musk showed up. Musk stands six foot one but he is absurdly broad-shouldered and sturdy. You’d figure he would use this frame to his advantage and perform an alpha-male strut (昂首阔步) when entering a room. Instead, he tends to be almost sheepish. His head tilted slightly down while walking, a quick handshake hello after reaching the table, and then butt in seat. From there, Musk needs a few minutes before he warms up and looks at ease.
Musk asked me to dinner for a negotiation of sorts. Eighteen months earlier, I’d informed him of my plans to write a book about him, and he’d informed me of his plans not to cooperate.
His rejection stung but sent me into dogged reporter mode. If I had to do this book without him, so be it. Plenty of people had left Musk’s companies, Tesla Motors and SpaceX, and would talk, and I already knew a lot of his friends. The interviews followed one after another, month after month, and two hundred or so people into the process, I heard from Musk once again. He called me at home and declared that things could go one of two ways: he could make my life very difficult or he could help with the project after all. He’d be willing to cooperate if he could read the book before it went to publication, and could add footnotes (脚注) throughout it. He would not meddle with my text, but he wanted the chance to set the record straight in spots that he deemed factually inaccurate. I understood where this was coming from. Musk wanted a measure of control over his life’s story. He’s also wired like a scientist and suffers mental anguish at the sight of a factual error. A mistake on a printed page would eat away at his soul—forever. While I could understand his perspective, I could not let him read the book, for professional, personal, and practical reasons. Musk has his version of the truth, and it’s not always the version of the truth that the rest of the world shares. He’s prone to lengthy answers to even the simplest of questions as well, and the thought of thirty-page footnotes seemed all too real. Still, we agreed to have dinner, chat all this out, and see where it left us.

3 . Two years ago, I set foot in Tanzania for the first time as a volunteer. And now, I’m writing this at my home in the middle of a village in Tanzania. I never thought that a six-week volunteer program could change my life so greatly, but it did!
My volunteer task was in Moshi.Of course I was nervous when I got my task, but on my first day, I quickly fell in love with my students. They were some of the sweetest and most hard-working kids I had ever met. Each day, I’d have them write in their journals on a new topic. One of my favorite days was when I asked the kids to write about their own life stories. Some of them shared theirs with everyone, and it was great. They had all been through so many difficult times, but no one had ever asked them to tell their stories before. To be able to offer these wonderful kids a safe environment to share such personal stories was amazing. And I couldn’t have created that environment without what I had learned from Cross-Cultural Solutions(CCS).
I completely fell in love with Tanzania during my time with CCS.I loved it so much that when I left in 2014, I knew that I had to return. So after I left college in 2015, I moved back to Tanzania and have been working at a school for Maasai children for almost one year now.
The experience that I had with CCS changed my career goals and my life greatly. I now plan to go into public health so that I can continue to help people around the world for the rest of my life.

8 . Growing up in Conway, South Carolina, I was always athletic and competitive. One afternoon, my brother grabbed me in the yard, and I felt some kind of pop. About an hour later, I couldn’t get up from a chair. Over the weekend, my joints (关节) swelled up. My mother took me to the hospital. It took nearly six months to check what was wrong with me. Then I was put on treatment. But I had so much joint damage that I couldn’t run like I used to.
My dad was a serious golfer. One day he said, “Let’s try golf.” He carried me onto the course. Seeing him hit those good shots made me want to do it too.
It wasn’t easy at first, because I had a lot of pain in my hands. I’d played golf, but it had never really caught my interest — it was too quiet for me. But I was happy to be outside, to have a chance of competing again, and I fell in love with it.
Later I made the high school team, but I got frustrated when I didn’t win, so I worked harder. Golf was the most challenging game I’d ever played.
I got a golf scholarship to the University of South Carolina and turned professional after I graduated. I still take medication, and I’m stiff and in pain sometimes. But I’ve got used to that.
I probably wouldn’t be a professional athlete if I hadn’t got sick. The experience taught me patience, and I learned to take nothing for granted. I know how happy I am to do what I do.

I was ready for bed one night. As I planned to turn off the lamp on my bedside table, my eyes fell on the card my brother had given me on our dad’s sixty-eightli birthday. It was a musical card with a photo of Dad smiling inside. When you opened it, a recording of Dad’s songs would play. The card just stood beside my bed.
My dad was a joyful man with a big heart. He always went above and beyond. When my house was on fire a few years ago, it burned down. Luckily, all the family members were safe. Dad took it upon himself to make things right. He called everyone he knew to raise the money for rebuilding the house. In the meantime, I, my husband and our four kids moved into his house.
There was one thing that I loved most about Dad: his singing voice. When I was growing up, he was always singing us songs like the ones recorded in the card. It always made us laugh. Part of the fun for us kids was that, despite his wonderfully deep voice, Dad sang songs to share joy. I could always pick out his voice from the crowd.
With those in my mind, I turned off the light and quickly fell asleep. I was awoken a few hours later by a loud sound. Dad’s voice was filling the room. It was from the card! I jumped out of bed, closing the card before the whole house woke up. How did that card start playing? I thought. I checked the windows in my bedroom. I found a window was left open. It must be the wind that blew the card open.
Then I heard a little noise. It seemed that the noise came from the laundry room (洗衣房). We lived on a farm and raised a dozen baby chicks. Too young to be outside, the chicks were in a plastic bin in our laundry room, under the warnith of a heat lamp. I opened the door to the laundry room and was hit with the smell of smoke.
Paragraph 1:
The heat lamp had fallen, hitting into the bin!
