My mother was a supporter of physical punishment, but for all her talking she has never spanked (打屁股) my siblings and me only once. Instead，she found ways of punishment that left a more lasting memory than giving us a spanking. One of the most memorable of these occasions occurred when I was four.
In the early 70’s my mother attended college during the day and I was in daycare. One day at daycare I watched an extremely tired mother attempt to pick up her daughter. The little girl asked, “Momma, are we going to McDonald’s for dinner?” The mother replied, “Honey, not tonight. Momma has to run a few errands (差事) and then we have to go home and cook dinner for Daddy.” “But I wanna go.” “Susie, I said not tonight. Maybe, if you are a good girl, we can go tomorrow.” Susie immediately dropped to the floor, kicking and screaming, “I want to go to McDonald’s.”
No amount of pleading (恳求) or scolding, her mother tried stopped Susie’s tantrum (发脾气). Finally her mother gave in, “Okay, Susie, let’s go to McDonald’s.” Susie stopped yelling and smiling she grabbed her mother’s hand and they left. To say I was amazed would be inaccurate; I was delighted that anything I wanted could be had by throwing a tantrum.
That day my mother picked me up early from daycare because we were going to a store to purchase some Christmas items. I was excited by the lights and decorations, and as we walked through the toy section on the way to the counter, I saw a toy I had to have. It was a white and red telephone whose bells rang as it was pulled along on a string. Looking lovingly up at my mother I asked, “Mama, can I have that telephone?”
She replied, “Baby, not now, but if you are a good girl, maybe Santa will bring it to you.” “But Mama, I want that telephone right now.” Her eyes narrowed and her hand tightened on mine. “Becky, you can’t have that telephone today, but if you misbehave, you can have a spanking.”

6 . The clothes you wear. The food you eat. The color of your bedroom walls. Where you go and how you get there. The people you hang around with. What time you go to bed. What do these things have in common? You're asking.
As a kid, you didn't have a say in everything; your parents made decisions about everything from the cereal you ate in the morning to the pajamas you wore at night.
But finally, kids grow up and become teens. And part of being a teen is developing your own identity-one that is separated from your parents. But as you change and grow into this new person who makes your own decisions，your parents have a difficult time adjusting.
The good news is that in many families the arguing will lessen as their parents get more comfortable with the idea that their teens have a right to certain opinions. It can take several years for parents and teens to adjust to their new role, though.
Sometimes this can feel impossible-like they just don't see your point of view and never will. But talking and expressing your opinions can help you gain more respect from your parents. Keep in mind, too, that your parents were teens once.

7 . Sally and I founded Armadillo & Co. almost 10 years ago. From the start, we’ve poured our hearts into making the business sustainable (可持续发展的). We only use natural or recycled materials, and every step of the dyeing (染色), spinning, weaving, and finishing process is done by hand using techniques that have been handed down through generations. As a result, each carpet is truly unique and full of soul, like a modern artwork.
The other concept of our company is social responsibility. We ensure our weavers are paid fair wages, and we’re a member of Care & Fair. For the last six years, we’ve also sponsored(赞助) a local primary school attended by many of our staff’s children. Each purchase of one of our carpets goes toward paying for the teachers’ salaries, uniforms, textbooks and regular health and eye checks. This year we’re launching a scholarship program to help the highest performing girls complete their secondary education. We’re as devoted to giving back as we are to making beautiful products.
I think the biggest challenge in my career is the balance between life and work. Many women struggle with this, especially mothers. My three children are so young, and my husband works and travels a lot, which is even more challenging. Meanwhile, time difference is a big challenge — our team is spread across the globe, which means long working hours on Skype or in the air travelling. It can also be difficult to switch off or draw the line when you see an opportunity to do more or do better, but it’s important to set aside some time for rest.
I’m fortunate to work with Sally because we perfectly complement (补足) each other. I’m all about the big picture while she’s much more into the finer details. On my fourteen birthday, I received lots of presents. Which present is the best in my eye? It’s hand-made notebook, which my best friend Jane gave it to me. Jane makes it by herself. 10 . I love training with my husband Chris. We do our own exercises separately, but then we really enjoy spending 30—40 minutes doing something we both like together. I also train with my family — my brother, his wife and our cousins will come to our house every now and then to train together. It's like family fun time! A little bit of competition also makes us work out harder.
Laziness, as you know, is contagious. But so is enthusiasm. If you can get your partner on board, you will be able to encourage each other on those days when the other doesn't feel like moving. If you set yourself a challenge and add competition to the mix, I promise you that the training will be much more fun. Time will fly by and you'll want to do it again.
This is why I wanted to learn Chris' favourite sport — surfing. Not only would we have more things to do together, but it would be a great challenge for me. In turn, I have introduced Chris to two of my favourite activities: horse riding and motorbiking. Now he also loves them, which means we have even more chances to have fun together. Encouraged by our example, my brother and his wife now train together too. This is what it's all about at the end of the day: quality time with your partner.
What if you don't have a partner? Well, I'm sure you have a friend who would love to train with you. Or, if you have young children, why not train in the backyard with another parent while they play? You just need some music. The important thing is to have a plan and to make the time to do it. It will be much more fun than doing it on your own.
