Ten-year-old Sami loved to visit his grandfather’s house in Puthur in Tamil Nadu, which was near the beautiful blue sea. At the seaside stood thick and tall palm(棕榈) trees with green coconuts hanging from them. When the coconuts fell down, the children would break them open and drink the coconut water. Sami liked to play with the rabbits and squirrels jumping about in the trees and bushes. He also liked fishing in the link ponds with his friends. It was always great fun to spend the holidays at Grandpa’s place.
This winter vacation. Sami was surprised when be came to his grandfather’s village. There were hardly any trees left. What lay at the water’s edge(边缘) were only sucks and mud. He saw houses built near the sea. Logs(木材), branches of trees and stones lay around. People had cut down many palm trees and there was hardly any greenery left.
“Grandpa, where have all the trees gone?” asked Sami.
“People have cut them down for wood, to be used for fuel and furniture.” replied Grandpa.
“There will be no more trees then. Where will the birds perch(栖息) and the squirrels play?”
“Let us hope that that day never comes,” sighed Grandpa.
Grandpa’s house was different. He never allowed his trees to be cut. He liked each palm tree in his courtyard. He also admired the two big trees near the front door. He called one of them Petu, and the other, Beta. They gave the sweetest juiciest coconuts which he always enjoyed sharing with Sami.
One night, Sami was awakened by a strange sound. He tossed and turned in bed. Suddenly, the ground shook as if the earth was splitting(裂开). He sat up straight and then ran to Grandpa, “It’s an earthquake”. Grandpa cried out. They ran outside the house where they thought it would be safer.

It was my birthday and I was looking forward to see my friends. We were meeting at my favorite Italian restaurant. I was exciting and got to a restaurant at exactly 7 o'clock. I looked around for a familiar face but failed. I decided not to wait for him patiently. The restaurant quickly filled up with customer, but none of them were my friends. I called Lily, but she didn’t answer. I felt lonely and sadly. My friends had forgotten my birthday. I went home, opened the door and walk into the dark house. Suddenly the lights went off and my friends jumped up and shouted “Surprise!” They hadn’t forgotten, it was the best birthday ever.
Boys like to be considered to be brave, but what kind of things can be considered to be brave? It is not a question that can be answered by words, but by the actual deed. A boy with the name Henry gave us a good example. Ronny and Henry were two friends in the same class. They and together and went home together. One day as Ronny and Henry were going home after school, they saw some people fighting in the street comer. Ronny said excitedly, “Some people are fighting! Let’s go and have a look!” But Henry refused. “It’s none of our business. We’d better go home and don’t get close to them. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward, and afraid to go.” said Ronny, and off he ran to the spot with some other boys. Henry had to go ho alone and didn’t think about it anymore. But Ronny thought Henry was a coward and told all the boys that. They laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him. Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Ronny for his rude behavior, because he had learned that true courage was shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ laughter.

8 . When I moved into my apartment in Toronto, the path forward of my immigrant life wasn’t clear. I was busy figuring out a new language and culture. I didn’t know anyone well in Toronto and wasn’t sure if I wanted to stay. As time passed, I grew roots into the ground while taking pictures of the garden next door.
My studies required me to take exams which I prepared for in the evenings, after work. My mother visited to take care of me. Once she arrived in Toronto, I showed her a few places she could wander to in the neighborhood. One day, on arriving home in the evening, I found her waiting for me.
“You will not believe it,” she said “Your neighbor talked to me today. She called me over to show me her garden, but I did not want to go empty-handed, so I snatched (一把抓起) the garden pictures from the shelves and gave them to her. She wanted to know about us.” I rang them and got an invitation that same evening.
My neighbors were incredibly welcoming. They “adopted” me that evening. Immigrants themselves, Ann and John were curious about me. They told us about their lives and their grandchildren.
Over the years, I felt like I became an extended member of their family. Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, birthdays, I was at Ann and John’s. They helped me embrace my new Canadian identity.
After graduation, I got a chance that meant I needed to move west. I didn’t get back to Toronto much, but when John’s 90th birthday came along, I couldn’t miss it.
Countless family and friends came to their house and its magic garden to celebrate John’s spirit. I stepped away to let myself navigate (穿行) those familiar garden paths, and there, I met Michael. Michael ended up joining me out west, and when we decided to get married, we immediately called Ann and John.
“You are having your wedding here!” they said. We could not refuse that offer. My parents couldn’t make it to our wedding. Age, disease and distance shattered (使破灭) my hopes of having them witness our happiness. But Ann and John, our other families and friends did not let any shadow fall over that day.
Many seasons have now passed. Ann still watches over her garden and perhaps secretly listens for John’s voice, now a memory. Life continues, but I know the garden will grow greener in spring. I cannot wait to wander its pathways again, wandering in Ann’s steps.

Two months to save my girl’s life
As my feet pounded the pavement, sweat dripped down my forehead and back. “Just a little bit further,” I told myself, determined to push forward. Though I’d never been much of a runner, I had a crucial motivation to save my little girl, Bridie. Born in January 2017, she had beautiful big blue eyes. But shortly after her arrival, doctors pointed out that her head was measuring quite large. Within days, she was diagnosed with sagittal craniosynostosis. Doctors explained that she’d need surgery. They also noticed that her limbs and fingers were measuring quite short, so Bridie went through genetic testing to find out why. When the results came back, my wife and I met with the specialist. “Bridie has Mainzer-Saldino syndrome,” he said. He also revealed the rare condition would cause reinal (视网膜的) degeneration, meaning she could go blind and develop kidney (肾) disease.
So, when Bridie fell ill in 2019 with common flu, it caused a loss to her little body. Sadly, the medications she needed to help her recover weakened her kidneys even further. By December that year, her specialist revealed they were only functioning at 30 percent. “If it gets any worse, she will need to start dialysis (透析),” he admitted, adding that a transplant might be required sooner than we first thought.
It broke my heart, and I knew I had to step up to help save my girl. So I volunteered to give her one of my kidneys right away. After undergoing multiple tests, I was declared a match. But there were still several barriers I had to overcome before I had the all-clear to donate.
“You’ll have to lose 15 kilos before we consider you fit to transplant,” the specialist told me in June. He gave me two months to get into shape. At 96.5 kilos, I wasn’t overweight, but I needed to lower my BMI to be fit for the surgery.

10 . Researchers from the University of Western Australia recently studied 3,000 middle and high school students. Among them were 618 teenagers with one parent who lived away from home for long periods of time because of work. The researchers wanted to know how the work of these “fly - in, fly - out” parents might influence the health of their children.
A higher percentage of teenagers who experienced the long work absence of a parent had emotional or behavioral problems compared with those whose parents worked more traditional hours. This supports earlier research finding high percentages of emotional problems in teenagers who often returned to an empty house after school or whose parents were seldom at dinner.
Findings also suggest that parents don’t have to be home all the time to be present in their children’s lives, but it helps to be home at certain times. And the best parental presence for a teenager may sometimes be like a potted (盆栽的) plant.
Many parents of teenagers have known this to be true and find ways to be present without trying to start a conversation. One friend of mine quietly does housework each evening in the sitting room where her teenagers watch TV. They enjoy one another’s company without the need to talk. Another friend usually accepts his daughter’s invitation to work or read nearby while she sits and does her homework. Perhaps, that, at least for some families, is the best way for a teenager and their parents to stay close.
In fact, many years of research suggest that children use their parents as a safe base from which to explore the world. Studies tell us that young children quietly follow their parents’ movements from room to room, even while carrying on with their own activities. Perhaps our teens, like babies, feel most at ease when their parents are still around. They don’t want to stay away from parents who allow them freedom.
A new school year is at hand, so as parents we could offer our teenagers a “potted flower” as a gift, whose quiet and steady presence will give them a great day.
