1 . There’s nothing more frustrating than a parent saying “no” to something you really want, whether it’s a dog, or a new phone.     1       However, there are a lot of simple things you can do to help you convince your parents to give you what you want!

Pick the right time to approach the subject. Usually, family dinner time is a safe bet. It is not a good idea to ask for something when either parent seems stressed, distracted, or tired.     2       Especially not if they’re upset at you.

Maintain a calm tone during the talk. Asking for something can be an emotional experience: you might feel passionate about the thing you’re asking for, and you might feel angry or frustrated if your parents say no.     3       Studies show negotiation is more successful if it’s done peacefully and rationally.

Be patient and give them time to think about it.     4       Tell them to get back to you in a couple hours or days with any questions or concerns they have. Let them know that you want to discuss this as mature, responsible adults and you are willing to work through any potential issues. Say it like that, and you’ll be sure to impress them with how well-rounded and balanced your argument is.

5       Before you go to your parents to ask for that new puppy, make sure you know exactly what adopting a pet requires. Having a good understanding of what you’ll be asking your parents about will help you present your case successfully; by knowing your topic inside and out, you’ll have confident answers for their (many, many) questions.

A.Understand your parents’ current feelings about your requirement.
B.Do background research on the thing you want.
C.You’d better never force them to give you an answer right away.
D.You should try to keep your head all the way.
E.You won’t always be able to persuade your parents to see things your way.
F.It’s good to discuss with your parents about what you need at that time.
G.Don’t bring it up when they’re not in a good mood.

3 . For many runners, a marathon can often be a challenge—but sometimes what gets a runner through the tough 26.2 miles is looking out into the crowd and seeing his or her loved one holding up a sign and shouting words of encouragement. For one mom, though, her loved one was a bit more hands-on.

While running the REVEL Big Cottonwood Marathon in Salt Lake City, Courtney Rich, a self-taught baker and mother of two, was beginning to run out of energy just yards from the end when she was suddenly joined by her 10-year-old daughter, Avery.

The touching moment, caught on video and posted on social media, shows Avery running to her mother’s side to support her as she approached the end of the race. Rich’s face lit up when Avery joined her and helped her cross the finish line.

Rich later said in the video’s caption that being joined by her daughter to finish the race was “a moment I hope neither of us ever forget”. Rich said that her daughter could tell she was struggling after a phone call near the end of the race. “She knew I had struggled the last few miles,” Rich said. “She saw tears in my eyes when I called on mile 24.”

In the video, Rich’s facial expression changes from tiredness to a smile after seeing her daughter emerge from the crowd to join her. Then, Rich and her daughter ran hand-in-hand to the finish line. “Nothing could have prepared me for the moment my 10-year-old daughter would jump out of the crowd and run with me to the finish line,” she said. When the race was done, the two hugged each other at the finish line. The video ends with a final caption, “And then she just held me. She held me.”

In the past, the REVEL Big Cottonwood Marathon has had other memorable moments of mothers caring for their children, but perhaps not as hands-on as this one.

1. What happened to Rich when she was coming to the finish line?
A.She felt herself struggling.B.She was far behind others.
C.She fell down all of a sudden.D.She was interrupted by Avery.
2. How did Avery react to the accident?
A.She ran the rest in place of Rich.B.She tried to call for help at once.
C.She helped Rich run to the finish line.D.She shouted encouraging words to Rich.
3. How did Rich feel about Avery’s response?
A.Doubtful.B.Content.C.Concerned.D.Expected.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.A Daughter Cheered For Her Mother By Joining In Her Race
B.A Mother Encouraged Her Daughter To Pursue Her Dream
C.A Daughter Got Involved In Her Mother’s Race By Mistake
D.A Mother Would Never Give Up On Her Marathon Dream

Maria was my best friend. When we first met, I knew we were meant to be friends forever. But then something happened.

One day, I said to her excitedly, “There’s a two-day art camp this summer,” holding up the bright-red paper I had grabbed as we entered the library.

Maria took the paper and glanced at it. She stopped when her eyes caught the date. “It’s during the last week of July,” she said. “That’s the same time when I would be out of town with my family.”

Maria handed the paper back to me as she stood up to look at the shelf of new books.

I sighed and dropped my head down.

“Alice, you’re the artist.” She smiled. “But I’m terrible at drawing.”

“You may not think you can draw, but you can learn,” I said in my most encouraging voice. I really didn’t want to go alone.

Going out of the library, I was still in low spirits.

After school, I showed the paper to my mother. She asked me whether I would attend the art camp. I told my mother probably not because my friend would not go.

Mom patted my back and she knew I had a hard time jumping into something with no familiar faces around. “Maybe next year,” she comforted me.

“Maybe.” I sighed. “I’m going outside to draw our pine tree. I’ll be out front.”

I opened the door and looked at the bright sunshine as I sat on the front doorstep. I thought about the art camp and wished I felt a little braver. Maria could make friends with a whole busload of kids in 10 minutes, but my stomach twirls like a roller coaster when I don’t know anyone around me. By the time I started painting, I had convinced myself it was OK to skip the camp.

I used my pencil and drew the pine’s strong and straight trunk, and added the graceful branches, making sure the upper ones lifted gently toward the sun.

It all started at tea-time. Mrs. Bendall, Dicky’s mother, and Mrs. Spears, who was spending the afternoon with her, were quietly sitting and sewing (做针线活)in the drawing room. The children were eating their bread and butter nicely and quietly, and the servant girl had just poured out the milk and water, when Dicky suddenly took the bread plate, put it upside down on his head, and held the bread knife tightly.

“Look at me!” he shouted.

His shocked sisters looked, and before the servant girl could get there, the bread plate shook, slid to the floor and broke into small pieces. At this awful point the little girls lifted up their voices and shouted their loudest.

“Mother, come and look what he’s done!”

“Dicky’s broken a great plate!”

“Come and stop him, mother!”

Can you imagine how mother came running? But she was too late. Dicky had jumped out of his chair, run through the window on to the veranda(走廊), and, well—there she stood—helpless. What could she do? She couldn’t chase after the child. She couldn’t hunt for Dicky through the apple trees. That would be undignified

“Very well, Dicky, ” she cried, “I shall have to think of some way of punishing you.”

Seeing this, Mrs. Spears said, “Oh, my dear. I’m sure you make a great mistake in trying to bring up children without beating them. Nothing really takes its place.” “Believe me. There is nothing like handing the naughty kid to his father,” she added.

Mrs. Bendall, deep inside, was terribly shocked to hear the advice. But Mrs. Spears seemed to take it as a normal thing, so she did it too.

The children had gone to bed before Dicky’s father Edward came back. Mrs. Bendall rushed to him, “You have to beat Dicky.”

“But why on earth should I start beating him?” responded Edward. “We’ve never done it before.”

10 . Pamela Malhotra has always attached great importance to education. However, life always seemed to “get in the way” every time she tried to finish her bachelor’s degree. The single mom was so devoted to working to support her two children that she repeatedly put her own education goals on hold, giving up her college program on two separate occasions over the years.

When he was just five years old, her son Bonifacio Malhotra noticed her struggling to get her degree, and he made a promise to help her. “I remember I just told my mom… one day, it’s gonna be you and me,” Bonifacio said. “We’re going to gain our degrees at the same time.” Those words proved to be predictable for the mom-and-son duo, who currently walked across the stage at the university to collect their bachelor’s degrees together!

“That promise, he never allowed it to die,” said Pamela. “He continuously confirmed that we’re gonna do this.” Their path to graduation wasn’t easy, but Bonifacio stayed true to his promise and helped his mother along the way. The two hold two associate’s degrees each, so in the fall of 2021 they registered together in bachelor-level online courses. They both found the classes challenging, but Bonifacio stepped up as the cheerleader his mother needed. “Mom, you’ve got to keep it going. I know you want to stop. We must keep going,” Bonifacio recalled. “The main thing was just trying to get everything lined up and stay on top of all the work.”

It took the Malhotras two years to finish their bachelor’s degrees, hers in humanities and Bonifacio’s in public safety administration. Pamela plans to stay at her job as a coordinator, and Bonifacio has accepted a job at university to help other students succeed in college, too.

Pamela said she was incredibly proud of her son’s achievement, and she personally couldn’t have reached her lifelong goal without the support of her family, especially him. “Between my son and my daughter, they were my greatest supporter,” Pamela proudly said.
