I’ve always thought of my mother Lee-Ann as a superhero because she has a huge heart full of love for anyone.
I could write about all of the wonderful things she has done, but I want to focus on the project she does every year that has shaped my whole family and everyone around us: She collects money and puts it in a little jar that we refer to as “The Charity Jar.” Every year, she takes this money and puts it toward something—a cause, an act of kindness, anything that can help someone. Sometimes, she buys coffees for the next people in line at a coffee shop. Other times, she buys something for an organization that needs it.
If you ask her about this tradition, she will tell you that she is carrying on something that her mother used to do around the holidays. She manages to get our whole family involved in this movement every year. Last year, she helped an organization where I volunteered—Ruth’s Place—a homeless women’s shelter in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
I had been helping in the shelter when I noticed the wish list on the wall: comforters (被子), a DVD player, a coffee maker and supplies. I told my mom, and within a day she had already asked if our family wanted to help Ruth’s Place. We all agreed and decided that the coffee maker and supplies would be the best things for our family to work on together. A few days later, Mom found a coffee maker online, showed it to us, and with a few clicks it was on its way. We gathered the rest of the supplies and called the shelter to find a day that we could deliver them.
On Thanksgiving Day, I drove my mom to the shelter—very slowly because she had baked fresh chocolate cupcakes for the women, and they were sitting on my clean leather seats. She had never been in the shelter before, but the whole way she talked about how excited she was to be able to check off something on their list.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Rani jumped off the school bus. Splash! She landed right in the muddy rainwater. It had been a Friday full of disasters. Angry thoughts boiled inside Rani’s head as she marched home in the rain. Why did she have to forget her raincoat back home? Why did she have to risk taking the school bus back home? Why did her hair have to wave up like a giant cotton candy balloon just when she wanted it to behave? Why, why, why, fumed (烦恼) Rani as she turned the backdoor key.
“Rani, is that you?” Mama called from the family room.
Suddenly Rani’s cousins, Amit and Sumit, came charging toward her.
“How many eggs does Rani have in that nest on her head?” laughed Amit.
“Let me get them off Rani’s head!” shouted Sumit.
This was really too much. Rani was upset. She fled out of the door, down the driveway, and back up the road she’d walked down minutes before. Angry as Ran I was, she knew that she should calm down. Without noticing, she walked behind a green curtain of lush (茂盛的) bamboo. Tearing through the wild growth, she made her way down a narrow mud path into a clearing. She threw her schoolbag on the ground and breathed hard.
Lying on her schoolbag, she bitterly remembered the hours, days, and weeks she had spent trying to soften her hair from using her grandmother’s special mixture of coconut to washing it with Sunsilk shampoo—but in vain.
Before long, the tiring day caught up with Rani, and she fell into sleep.
“Rani! Raa—aani!”
Rani woke up to Mama’s calls. She lifted her head from her knees. She wandered absently around the bamboo overlooking her house. Rani hugged herself, making no response. “I still need time to calm down,” she told herself, “Amit and Sumit shouldn’t have made fun of me.”
Alone in her secret hideout, Rani watched the shadows get longer and begin to disappear as dusk fell. Suddenly the leaves rustled (沙沙作响).

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________The couple, Ella and Ken, lived in a fancy countryside house every summer together with their boys Jim and Dick, aged 7 and 11.
The two kids got on well with each other, unlike some other brothers who would often fight over small things. They shared everything happening in their school and exchanged their favourite toys and books. Except for one thing, cleaning! One sunny morning, Ella called out to her children, “Jim and Dick, it’s time to clean your room!” The kids sighed deeply. Cleaning their room was always the last thing they wanted to do.
Unhappy, Jim and Dick dragged their feet into their messy room. Toys were thrown randomly here and there on the floor, clothes were piled up on chairs, and books were haphazardly (随意的) piled on the shelves. It was a total mess!
Mom came in, “Oh, God! How come? We need to work together to clean it up.” Jim and Dick exchanged looks, clearly not delighted with the task at hand. There were a few arguments between them, especially when it came to cleaning their room.
Mom, realizing their unwillingness, said to the kids, “A clean room not only looks nice but also helps us arrange our life in an orderly way. It’s important to take care of our belongings and keep our surroundings clean.” The boys didn’t respond, seemingly thinking about something.
Their father happened to hear the conversation and decided to give them a hand. He came up with a good idea. He said, “I know that cleaning can be dull, but what if we change it into a fun contest? The winner, who can find the most interesting item hidden in this messy room, will decide what we have for dessert tonight!”
Their faces lighting up with excitement, they accepted their father’s suggestion.

Children seem to care so much about their names. A study shows that most young people wish their parents had given them a different name.
Some people choose to change their names when they grow up. Many people in show business don’t use the names their parents gave them. Have you ever listened to Joanne? No? The answer could be “yes” if we call her stage name instead! You may never heard of Margaret. But if we tell you her stage name, you might know her as a famous dancer.
In many cultures, there are special ideas about how to choose a name. For example, many people choose a name that has been in their family for many years. It tells the child where he or she comes from.
Choosing a good name isn’t easy. Many parents search books that tell them the meanings of names. They could choose a name that carries a message. For example, Edith means “valuable gift”. Amanda means “love”. And Fara means “joy”.
Names like these tell family and friends how happy they are with their new baby. Other names can say something about the events during the birth of the child. In Africa, a first born son may have the name Mosi and the name Ama means “born on Saturday”.
Is every boy called Curtis polite? And is every girl called Mahira quick and full of energy? No parents can tell what kind of person their child will grow up to be. Just because parents name a boy Fahim, it doesn’t mean he will be clever. All they can do is hope.
