I visited my aunt in a countryside near the city last week. I was surprising to see that great changes had been taken place in the countryside. Take my aunt’s family for example. They supply rarely trees and flowers to the stores in the cities. And they have over ten worker working for them. Their family’s income reached as many as 100, 000 yuan last year. Not only do they have a house, a car and a computer, they can also afford an trip abroad every year. When they are asked what else they need most, they say that they want learn a little English. Only then can we do business with foreigners directly. To their delight, my cousin can used what he has learned from university to helping them with overseas trade now.
2 . One day when I was 5, my mother scolded (责骂) me for not finishing my breakfast and I got angry. I wanted to play outside and not to be made to finish eating my breakfast. When angrily opening the screen door with my foot, I kicked back about a 12-inch part of the lower left hand corner of the new screen door. But I had no remorse, for I was happy to be playing in the backyard with my toys.
Today, I know if my child had done what I did, I would have scolded my child, and told him about how expensive this new screen door was, and I would have delivered a spanking (打屁股) for it. My parents never said a word. They left the corner of the screen door pushed out, creating an opening, a breach (裂缝) in the defense against unwanted insects.
For years, every time I saw that corner of the screen, it would constantly make me think about my mistake. For years, I knew that everyone in my family would see that hole and remember who did it. For years, every time I saw a fly buzzing (嗡嗡) in the kitchen, I would wonder if it came in through the hole that I had created with my angry foot. I would wonder if my family members were thinking the same thing, silently blaming me every time a flying insect entered our home, making life more terrible for us all. My parents taught me a valuable lesson, one that a spanking or stern (严厉的) words perhaps could not deliver. Their silent punishment for what I had done delivered a hundred stern messages to me. Above all, it has helped me become a more patient person and not burst out so easily.

My husband’s sister-in-law died of cancer at 33, leaving a confused son Todd in the care of his father, who was not able to handle his own life. For the next 6 months, Todd was not only dealing with his personal world torn apart, but he was often laughed at and bullied (欺凌) by his classmates. What to do with Todd became the topic of family meetings and discussions.
Several of my husband’s relatives wanted to invite Todd into their homes and families, but they hadn’t made a decision yet. Our family of five—my husband, our three young children, and I—lived miles away from the rest of the family. Perhaps the best solution would be to remove Todd from his current location. After many serious discussions, we decided to take on the challenge. We would give him a fresh start—a new life.
We also determined that the choice to live with us must be Todd’s. When he was asked, he replied YES as if he had found a life-saving raft in an ocean of helplessness. That does not mean he was not afraid—he was terrified. I was, too. What if I could not be the mother he needed? How would my other children accept him? The day he was to arrive, I prepared my daughter, aged eight, and son, aged seven (the baby was too little) to help them understand that their cousin was coming to live with us and would be like an older brother. Their little minds thought it was wonderful!
When Todd arrived, he stood in the doorway, his face white with fear. He knew, and I knew, that the next step he took would change our lives forever. At ten years old, he had already experienced more emotional pain than most people do in a lifetime. “Todd, come in,” I said. “We are so excited to have you here. Come into the kitchen. I’ve made a cake.” I hoped my words were welcoming and cheerful.

I know many interested neighbours. One of us is Miss Tan. Most of my neighbours drive or took public transport to work. However, Miss Tan walks to her office every mornings. Although it quite a distance away from her home, she walks daily to keep fit. Miss Tan is always energetic and I admire her for her determination to stay healthily.
For the Covid-19 pandemic, exercising seems to be impossible. However, Miss Tan and her family has been doing simple workouts in the comfort of her home. Miss Tan believes that a fit body is important for work or life. It also makes people to feel productive.

Daniela Has Changed
“Mom, I’m sick and tired of your asking about me!” Daniela shouted. “You have to understand that I’m no longer a kid! I have every right to do whatever I wish only if I don’t bring people trouble. Mom, I want to let you know this!”
“Daniela, what has come over you?!” Frances questioned angrily at her daughter’s strange behavior. “I’m surprised at what you’ve just told me! Let me know who is the force behind this silly attitude of yours. Your friends with bad habits? I guess it may be! Your dad and I, my sweetheart, have always wanted the best for you but here you’re trying to tell me how grown you are!”
“Yes, I want you to know that I’m grown-up now! Mom, I’m fifteen! I know what’s good for me and what’s not! Tara is just a year older than I am but she does what she likes in her home! But here I am, at my age, being asked of where I have been and am going, whom I am hanging out with and all those! Mom, you know what? I’m tired of all these!” Daniela said.
“Don’t be childish, Daniela!” Mom advised, wanting to take hold of her shoulders. “Tara isn’t my daughter and my daughter isn’t Tara! I want you to understand that her family and ours are quite different in all areas. I don’t want to draw any comparison between us now! You’ve always been a good girl, Daniela! Why this sudden change of character in the last few days?!” “Mom, if you really care to know, that’s none of your business! Feel free to let dad know what took place when he comes back from work! Bye!” Daniela angrily replied to her and rushed out directly to her uncle’s home.

9 . I worked in a small company with about thirty-five employees (雇员). We had a good-sized kitchen with a fridge that several employees used. But people would often go to the fridge to surprisingly find either their whole lunch missing, or in my case, my can of Cherry Coke gone. I usually kept it in my lunch bag. At times when I bought takeaway food, I would get two—one for lunch and one for dinner—so I didn’t have my lunch bag. Even so, I often couldn’t find the food. It was a shock to everyone.
We doubted who was stealing, but could never prove (证明) it. One day, a good idea came to my mind, and I couldn’t wait to try it.
It was break time at noon. I headed down to the kitchen about five minutes early and gave my Coke such a hard shake that I feared it may actually go off in my hands. I placed it back in the fridge. Then, I hid into a cupboard in the kitchen, waiting for the right moment.
BINGO! A lady came in and took the Coke. I put my hand over my mouth for her to open it, but she took it with her and left. I thought she would open it in the hall. No!
As I left the kitchen, I heard her yell (叫喊). I passed her office, and Coke was everywhere: the walls, the floor, all over her desk, computer, her work, and all over her—everywhere!
Well, food has never gone missing again since then because the lady got fired.

10 . “Dad, I need your help. Come here!” My 5-year-old girl pulled me towards the computer. “Dad, please buy everything I have in the Amazon shopping cart (购物车). Here, take this cash from my savings!” The shopping cart showed ten items for a total of about 130 dollars. “Wait!” I replied.“That’s too much money! Why do you need all these things?”“Please, Dad! These items will get here before Christmas. I have a surprise for everyone. No peeking(偷看)!” she explained, and I bought everything.
A couple of days later, she got everything. I saw her then wrapping (包装) all her gifts. “Can I help you?” I asked.“No, Dad. I told you these are special surprises. No peeking!” she replied. Her excitement was obvious.
The day came. She was all around her gifts, planning, protecting, arranging. Everything had to be perfect. As soon as dinner was over, she jumped from her chair and took her gifts. She went around giving each one of us her piece of love. These were small items, but it was the meaning of giving her heart that we were really feeling. As she gave the gift to each person, she watched the expression on our faces. Our smiles were her greatest reward. Her last gift was for my 2-year-old boy—a toy car. It was hard to describe my little boy’s delight at getting this gift! For several minutes, everyone’s attention was focused on watching him go all around the house happily.
Seeing these acts of my 5-year-old helped me understand the power of giving—giving from the heart. Later that day, my girl received some gifts, but she didn’t need them. She focused on others, not on herself. It was clear that she was the one feeling true joy.
