文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者的父亲会给出实用的建议和做实际行动来表达对作者的爱。

1 . “Have you checked the oil in the car?” my father used to say to me, his way of “Hello, hope you are well.” Sometimes our phone calls would begin with a question about the oil and end with a question about the oil, with not a lot in between.

Fathers have a lot of love to give, but it’s often offered by means of practical advice. In my experience: It’s mostly about my car. “How’s the car running?” “Did you get it serviced?” My car — an old green Toyota Corona bought for $500 — was where my father showed his love.

Why can’t we fathers just say “I love you” or “It’s great to see you”? The point is: that’s exactly what we are saying. You just have to translate from the language that is Fatherlish. Listen closely enough and the phrase “I love you” can be heard in the slightly longer “I could come around Saturday and repair your chair.” The words “You made my life better from the moment you were born” may be hardly heard, but the main meaning is there in the more common “I’ll hold the ladder while you get the leaves down from the roof.”

When I was 17, I went on my first road trip — a friend and I in that old car. My father stood on the corner on a cold morning to say goodbye. “Highways are dangerous,” he said, “so don’t try overtaking anything faster than a horse and buggy. And take a break every two hours. And every time you stop for gas, you really should check the oil.” At the time we thought his speech was pretty funny and would sing “horse-and-buggy” every time I tried to overtake some other speeding cars.

Dad’s long gone now. But after all these years, I realize that had I owned a copy of the Fatherlish-to-English dictionary, I’d have understood that the speech my friend and I so carelessly laughed at was simply Dad’s attempt at love.

1. Why did the author’s father often ask about the car?
A.To show his love for the car.B.To see if there is enough oil.
C.To express his care to his son.D.To check the condition of the car.
2. Which of the following sentences is an example of Fatherlish?
A.I love you deeply.B.It’s great to see you.
C.You made my life better.D.I can check the oil for you.
3. What does the underlined word “overtaking” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Outrunning.B.Approaching.
C.Crashing into.D.Knocking over.
4. What can be inferred about the author in the last paragraph?
A.He wanted to own a dictionary.B.He regrets his childish behavior.
C.He is sad about his father’s death.D.He realized his father’s love then.

文章大意:这是一则新闻报道。这篇文章主要讲了Keith McDermott急切地想帮助96岁的母亲再次说母语,于是他在社交媒体上发出了呼吁,并得到了大量善意的回应。

2 . Desperate to help his 96-year-old mother to speak her mother tongue again, Keith McDermott made an appeal on social media and was met with a flood of kind responses. The old lady, Ray, was moved to tears after talking on the phone with one of the enthusiastic respondents in Welsh.

Ray moved to America after meeting her husband when she was only 18, hence waving goodbye to her life in Wales. She continued to speak Welsh with her mum-keeping a little bit of home. But she lost her beloved mum four decades ago and hadn't spoken Welsh ever since.

Despite suffering from short-term memory loss and sometimes not remembering what she has done recently, Ray's childhood memories in Wales remain clear. “She wants to return but I know, given her age, such long-distance travel is out of the question.” said Keith, “Once she mentioned ‘I wish I could speak Welsh again but I suppose I never will.’ It was then that I thought I should make her wish happen.”

So Keith, 70, posted on social media in the New York Welsh area asking for any Welsh speakers that could speak Welsh with his mum. And he was touched, as well as a little shocked, to receive over 30 responses within half an hour. Keith thanked everyone and eventually asked Melisa to give his mum a phone call. “Speaking with Melisa, her (Ray's) Welsh was a little rusty. A few more Welsh conversations and I think she'd be fluent again,” added Keith.

“When you have a parent in their nineties, you will find you two have something in common: you're both old, so I am very sympathetic to my mother's feelings of loneliness and isolation (孤立). I'm feeling it myself.” Keith hopes to set up more Welsh phone conversations for his mum and Melisa has promised to send Ray some short stories in Welsh to remind her of her life in Wales.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了身患多种疾病并经历病痛和无数次治疗的小女孩Rosie通过成立非盈利组织,给住院的孩子送玩具来帮助他们的故事。

3 . Rosie Colucci’s medical history is filled with a series of thunderstruck numbers: 3 rare and life-threatening diseases—an inoperable brain tumor(肿瘤), neurofibromatosis and hydrocephalus—countless medications, including six types of chemotherapy(化疗); 14 brain surgeries, mainly to implant catheters to keep fluid from gathering on her brain, a result of the hydrocephalus; 16 other surgeries and 230 tests; 405 clinic visits; 1,486 doses of chemotherapy; 71 nights in the hospital; 33 emergency room visits; and 11 stays in the ICU.

Another number: Rosie’s age—14. An official cancer diagnosis came when she was little. After a decade of being sick, the teenager would much rather focus on some different numbers.

Take 60,000—that’s how many new toys, games and blankets she’s helped get into the hands of hospitalized kids. She’s also raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for pediatric cancer research. Rosie increases her toy giveaways around the holidays but gives them out year round.

It didn’t sit well with her as a kid learning to share that so many people gave her stuffed animals and toys, while other kids hospitalized with equally serious diseases weren’t seeing the same gifts.

Rosie works tirelessly on Rosie’s Toy Box, a charitable organization she came up with, which now is on the path toward becoming a registered nonprofit, drawing hundreds of donated toys for hospitalized kids.

“I wanted to de-emphasize the expecting of gifts and asking for gifts, and I just wanted to give her a sense of giving rather than always receiving,” Cathy Reichl, her mother, said, “I hope it’s something that stays with her as she grows, and I think it will be—the realization that not everyone has what you have, some people have struggles with their health and we could just use something to brighten their days.”

Tyden won top prize of tickets,so we went to cash them in and select his gifts. I felt a little sad because my loved one and I had our first date at this center and had exchanged little things from the showcase. I noticed a turtle and remembered my partner loved it. I asked the young man behind the showcase if I could just buy the turtle without tickets. He said. “Unluckily. that is not a choice.”

5 . It’s not easy being a teenager —— nor is it easy being the parent of a teenager. You can make your child feel angry, hurt or misunderstood by what you say without realizing it yourself. It is important to give your child the space he needs to grow while gently letting him know that you’ll still be there for him when he needs you.

Expect a lot from your child, just not everything. Except for health and safety problems, such as drug use or careless driving, consider everything else open to discussion. If your child is unwilling to discuss something, don’t insist he tell you what’s on his mind. The more you insist, the more likely that he’ll clam up. Instead, let him attempt to solve things by himself. At the same time, remind him that you’re always there for him if he should seek advice or help. Show respect for your teenager’s privacy. Never read his mail or listen in on personal conversations.

Teach your teenager that the family phone is for the whole family. If your child talks on the family’s telephone for too long, tell him he can talk for l5 minutes, but then he must stay off the phone for at least all equal period of time. This not only frees up the line so that other family members can make and receive calls, but teaches your teenager moderation(节制).Or if you are open to the idea, allow your teenager his own phone that he pays for with his own pocket money or a part-time job.

6 . How to Support a Friend Struggling with Their Mental Health?

Maybe you've noticed a friend is opening up to you for the first time about their anxiety.     1    . Here is what you can do when supporting someone who's struggling with their mental health.

7 . An influencer, that was my mama.

Oh, not like the ones we see nowadays, a string of followers and fame. No, my mama had just three followers, my two older brothers and then me.

As near as I can remember, we didn't have much. Living on a piece of dirt in the top half of California, my mama took care of our plot of land; she was worn out by day's end. I watched. I learned. I followed. My little fist would tightly hold garden tools while mama's steadied our cow.

Life was hard, but my mama didn't complain, my daddy working far away. But then just around the bend one day, a new path sprung up, a different. I can still remember this change of scene, a fresh grade-school down the street, houses lined up side by side to its open gate. Mama insisted we help the new school by taking part in a “paper drive,” a fundraiser. My mama and I walked house to house and back to the school again and again to recycle abandoned newspapers and to raise money. At night we finished what we'd begun, arms aching but with a good feeling inside. I watched. I learned. I followed. My young hands were blackened with ink, a lesson impressed on my heart.

Not so long after, childhood stepped so lightly into womanhood. Along the way she showed me how to stand tall, be a leader, and not follow the crowd. “Finish what you start, speak truth, and be kind” were her words. Now that I have become a mother, I see her wisdom. Good sense, I think, has caught up with me.

Mama's gone now; my hands got rough like hers. She once rocked my crib (婴儿床) with her loving hands, and so she “rocked” my world, too. Maybe it's not about how many followers we have, but whom we really influence. I watched. I learned. I followed. Just like my mama.

A.She was hard-working.B.She was warm-hearted.
