1 . There are so many ways to make new friends such as joining a sports team, taking part in community activities, or traveling. And there is no doubt that a friend in need is a friend indeed because he can help you out when you are in trouble or encourage you when you are frustrated (沮丧). Personally, joining a sports team will be my first choice.

The primary reason for this is that everyone in a sports team has the same interest, which is the most fundamental (基础的) character for friends. Because of it, they will become your potential friends so that the chance to be true friends is very high. In addition, the same interest can give you a lot of topics to talk about with your friends in daily conversation.

Another factor that should be taken into consideration is the memory. After you fight for a goal with your partners, it will leave you a good experience, which is necessary for a long-lasting friendship. I used to be a player in the basketball team of my high school. Even though it was five years ago, I can remember all the exciting moments when we fought for the championship as if they happened yesterday. And although we went to different universities, we get together so many times.

In addition, trust is also an important aspect. As we know, keeping trust is the most important thing in the team because it can make you be together all the time. Furthermore, you can share happiness and sadness with reliable friends and they will make you feel life is beautiful and that the future is bright.

Join a sports team, and your new friends are waiting for you.

1. Why does the author think that a friend in need is a friend indeed?
A.He can share your happiness.B.He can help you when you need him.
C.He can help you join a sports team.D.He can encourage you when you succeed.
2. What does the author think is the best way to make new friends?
A.Taking part in community activitiesB.Remembering exciting moments
C.Joining a sports teamD.Traveling with others
3. The underlined word “potential in the second paragraph can replaced by “______”.
A.bestB.suitableC.reliableD.possible
4. What is the main idea of the passage?
A.No sports teams, no new friendsB.A friend in need is a friend indeed
C.Join a sports team to make new friendsD.True friends should have the same interest

2 . At a clinic in Waterloo, Ontario, an elderly woman sat on the edge of a waiting room chair singing “My Heart Will Go On.” With little effort, she was able to send her sweet voice exploding into every corner of the clinic.

There was a lot of shifting in seats, but mainly they awkwardly avoid their eyes and tried to pretend there was nothing out of the ordinary going on. I was there with my father, who was getting a routine blood test, when the woman arrived. She settled into the seat directly across from my Dad. She smiled at him, and he smiled back.

My Dad had been living with Alzheimer’s (阿尔茨海默症) for several years, When he was healthy, he considered it wholly bad mannered to bring too much attention to oneself. Since Alzheimer’s has a tendency to destroy a person’s patience, Dad had experienced a few challenging encounters in the past.

Her singing began gently. I glanced over at Dad. His smile was gone, and he was staring right at her. She was staring back. I couldn’t read his expression, but it seemed to be something like confusion. I watched for any sign of a coming angry outburst. Instead, his face softened, and the tension eased in his brow.

People say that Alzheimer’s is a thief, and that it steals your loved ones slowly, day by day. But certain experiences with my Dad have allowed me to see a side of him that I never knew existed. I will hold on to those moments when he told me tender stories about when he was a child, as if he knew that he didn’t have much time left to show me who he really was. In an unexpected way, that’s what happened for me that day in the clinic. Alzheimer’s sometimes seemed to be peeling back the onion of my Dad’s true self.

When her song ended, the woman opened her eyes. My Dad was still looking directly at her.

“That was beautiful,” he said. And she smiled and said. “Thank you.”

1. How did most people feel when hearing the woman’s song?
A.InspiredB.Ashamed.C.Relaxed.D.Embarrassed.
2. What might the author’s Dad consider wrong when he was healthy?
A.Staring at people around.B.Having challenging experiences.
C.Singing loudly in a public place.D.Chatting with a woman stranger.
3. What did the author care about most while the woman sang?
A.Whether her Dad would be angry.B.How beautifully the woman sang.
C.What made her Dad look confused.D.Why her Dad stared at the woman.
4. What did the author discover at the clinic that day?
A.The woman’s gift for music.B.The true self of her Dad.
C.The danger of Alzheimer’s.D.The healing power of music.

4 . "Dad," I say one day, "let's take a trip. Why don't you fly out and meet me?"

My father had just retired after 27 years as a manager for IBM. His job filled his day, his thought, and his life. While he woke up and took a warm shower, I screamed under a freezing waterfall in Peru. While he tied a tie and put on the same Swiss watch, I rowed a boat across Lake of the Ozarks.

My father sees me drifting (漂泊) aimlessly, nothing to show for my 33 years but a passport full of funny stamps. He wants me to settle down, but now I want him to find an adventure.

He agrees to travel with me through the national parks. We meet four weeks later in Rapid City.

"What is our first stop?" asks my father

"What time is it?"

"Still don't have a watch?"

Less than an hour away is Mount Rushmore. As he stares up at the four Presidents carved in granite (花岗岩) , his mouth and eyes open slowly, like those of a little boy.

"Unbelievable." he says, "How was this done?"

A film in the information center shows sculptor Gutzon Borglum devoted 14 years to the sculpture (雕像) and then left the final touches to his son.

We stare up and I ask myself, "Would I ever devote my life to anything?"

I always used to hear my father's complaints about my having no directions or goals. Now I hear it in my own heart.

The next day we' re at Yellowstone National Park, where we have a picnic.

"Did you ever travel with your dad?" I ask.

"Only once," he says, "I never spoke much with my father. We loved each other—but never said it. Whatever he could give me, he gave.”

The last sentenceit's probably the same thing I'd say about my father. And what I'd want my child to say about me.

In Glacier National Park, my father says, "I've never seen water so blue." I have, in several places of the world. I can keep travelling, but on second thought I realize maybe a regular (稳定的) job won't be as boring as I feared.

Weeks after our trip, I call my father. "The photos from the trip are wonderful." he says. "We have got to take another trip like that sometime."

I tell him I've decided to settle down, and I'm wearing a watch.

5 . Papa, as a son of a poor farmer, left school early and went to work in a factory, for education was for the rich then. So, the world became his school. With great interest, he read everything he could lay his hands on, listened to the town elders and learned about the world beyond his tiny hometown. “There’s so much to learn. Though we’re born stupid, only the stupid remain that way,” he said. He was determined that none of his children would be denied education.

Thus, Papa insisted that we learn at least one new thing every day. Though, as children, we thought this was crazy, it would never have occurred to us to deny Papa’s requests. We would talk about the news of the day at dinner time: no matter how unimportant, it was never taken lightly. Papa would listen carefully and was ready with some comments, always to the point.

Then came the moment — the time to share the day’s new learning. “Felice, tell me what you have learned today,” he said.

“I have learned that the population of Nepal is ...” Silence.

Papa was thinking about what was said and then he said, “Get the map; let’s see where Nepal is.” Then the whole family went on a search for Nepal.

By looking at us, listening to us, respecting our input, affirming (肯定) our value and giving us a sense of dignity, Papa was unquestioningly our most influential teacher. 7 . As I went down the wooden snowy steps, I held the rough fence with one hand, held my crying daughter Kelly with the other and made my way into the yard. I knew everything would be okay if I located my mother.

Instead of a smile, she greeted me with concern. I knew she had read my face as I’d approached. “What’s wrong?” she asked.

I held the baby out. “I can’t take care of this baby,” I said simply. My mother didn’t take her from my arms as I expected. She smiled slightly, and then replied firmly, “You have to take care of that baby.” This was not the reply I wanted. Couldn’t she hear the baby crying? I wanted her to fix this problem. Instead, she took off her gloves and asked me in for some coffee.

Mom held Kelly while I held the coffee cup. At that moment the baby finally stopped crying. I glanced over at Kelly, content in my mother’s arms. Her tiny blue eyes were fixed on me, as if to ask, “What’s the problem here, Mama?” Her sweet, familiar breath eased the stress in the air. I looked at my mother, feeling foolish but relieved. She stood and placed an arm around my shoulders. “By the time you came along, things were quite the opposite for me. But with your elder brother, you can bet that I often felt helpless.”

The baby showed no signs of our afternoon struggle, while my own hair remained damp and messy from sweat and worry. “Crying is the only way babies have to communicate. Try to listen to her cries and hear them as language. She’s not crying to annoy you; she’s trying to send a message with the only voice she has.”

Once again, her gentle guidance had supported me through a storm and back into clear skies.

8 . My wife and I recently completed a day-long tour of the Great Wall with Jessie. In addition to being very knowledgeable about the history of the areas that we toured, she spoke excellent English and was able to answer all of our questions. Her driver was very experienced and polite, and we really enjoyed being able to have a customized tour that avoided the tourist traps and forced shopping that seem to be a part of the larger group tours.

The attractions themselves were fantastic. I was a little worried that the snowy weather might impact our trip to the Great Wall, but everything went fine, and there weren’t many people out at all that day. I suggest wearing strong shoes—the Great Wall is really a hike. And in snowy or rainy days, the surfaces are pretty slippery (滑的)! Seeing this area in winter was really unique, and the snow made for great pictures. Jessie kept us entertained with stories and facts about the construction of the Wall, and always pointed out great spots for taking pictures. Even though she’s in fantastic shape, she cared about our level of fitness and often stopped to let us catch our breath.

When we got back to our hotel, Jessie gave us a great recommendation for dinner and some tips for our planned stops the next day. If I find myself in Beijing in the future, I will certainly be contacting Jessie for more tour opportunities, and I’ve already recommended her to some friends who are visiting the area later in the year. I can’t say enough about how kind and knowledgeable she was, and she really gave us a great tour experience.

1. What can we infer about Jessie?
A.She is a tour advisor.
B.She is a tour guide.
C.She is a foreign traveler.
D.She is a skilled driver.

9 . An influencer, that was my mama.

Oh, not like the ones we see nowadays, a string of followers and fame. No, my mama had just three followers, my two older brothers and then me.

As near as I can remember, we didn't have much. Living on a piece of dirt in the top half of California, my mama took care of our plot of land; she was worn out by day's end. I watched. I learned. I followed. My little fist would tightly hold garden tools while mama's steadied our cow.

Life was hard, but my mama didn't complain, my daddy working far away. But then just around the bend one day, a new path sprung up, a different. I can still remember this change of scene, a fresh grade-school down the street, houses lined up side by side to its open gate. Mama insisted we help the new school by taking part in a “paper drive,” a fundraiser. My mama and I walked house to house and back to the school again and again to recycle abandoned newspapers and to raise money. At night we finished what we'd begun, arms aching but with a good feeling inside. I watched. I learned. I followed. My young hands were blackened with ink, a lesson impressed on my heart.

Not so long after, childhood stepped so lightly into womanhood. Along the way she showed me how to stand tall, be a leader, and not follow the crowd. “Finish what you start, speak truth, and be kind” were her words. Now that I have become a mother, I see her wisdom. Good sense, I think, has caught up with me.

Mama's gone now; my hands got rough like hers. She once rocked my crib (婴儿床) with her loving hands, and so she “rocked” my world, too. Maybe it's not about how many followers we have, but whom we really influence. I watched. I learned. I followed. Just like my mama.

1. What can we learn about the author's mother from paragraph 5?
A.She was hard-working.B.She was warm-hearted.
C.Her kindness helps others a lot.D.Her intelligence impresses the author.
2. What does the underlined word “rocked” in paragraph 6 mean?
A.Shone.B.Shaped.
C.Shook.D.Shaded.
3. Why does the author mention “I watched. I learned. I followed.” a few times?
A.To stress her belief.B.To show her ability.
C.To provide the background.D.To memorize her mother.
4. What does the author want to tell us most?
A.We can never show love to our mothers enough.
B.Nothing is greater than a mother's love to her kids.
C.Mother's words and actions affect kids' whole lives.
D.The greatest test is to bear hardship without losing hope.

10 . My 10-year-old Donna said, "Mom, I made a new friend at school today. Can she come over tomorrow?" Donna was a shy girl and I wanted her to make some friends to bring her out of her shell.

"Sure, honey, that sounds great." I said, thinking back to my own best friend, Lillian. We lived across the street from each other in Washington Heights, New York. We met at the age of 10, too. Like my daughter, I was shy, but Lillian drew me out. She was one of the friendliest people in school, with shiny black hair and a mile-wide smile. I knew we would be best friends forever.

In senior high school, Lillian went on a trip to Florida. This was the first time we had to be away from each other for a few days. "I'll be back soon." she told me.
