Discovering a Lost Brother

Kieron Graham always knew he had an elder brother named Vincent. His adoption papers,     1     (sign) when he was three months old, listed a brother named Vincent but no last name. Though Kieron spent years thinking about Vincent, he could never track him down.

That changed in December 2017, when Kieron’s adoptive parents gave him an DNA test as a Christmas gift. When his results came back, he was surprised     2     (find) he had a lot of DNA matches for relatives who had also taken the test. Most were distant connections, but one match was so strong that it     3     (label) “close family.” His name was Vincent Ghant. Kieron looked for him on Facebook and soon made a possible connection.

When they connected, it was     4     they had known each other their whole lives. As they talked, the brothers realized they lived about 20 minutes from each other.     5    (surprisingly), they attended the same university and majored and minored in the same subjects.

Vincent was nine when Kieron was born and remembers caring for his baby brother. But times were tough, and Shawn, who worked 15-plus hours a day as a nurse, decided that     6    (place) Kieron for adoption would give him the best chance to succeed.

“She was very emotional about that time, to the point     7     it was hard for her to put into words anything about what happened,” Vincent says.

Now the brothers had the chance to make up for lost time. They decided to meet at a local tea shop that week. One of Vincent’s concerns was that Kieron     8     hate his birth family for placing him for adoption. He was relieved Kieron didn’t, and     9     he’d grown up in a loving family. After that first meeting, the brothers played football together and celebrated Christmas with their families. “We’ll keep growing our relationship     10     it’s time to leave this planet,” says Vincent. That shouldn’t be hard. As Kieron says, “We’ve got years and years to catch up on.”

Mystery of the White Gardenia (栀子花)

(Every year on my birthday, from the time I turned 12, a white gardenia was delivered to my house. No card or note came with it.)

One month before my high-school graduation, my father died of a heart attack. My feelings ranged from grief to abandonment, fear and     1     (overwhelm) anger that my dad was missing some of the most important events in my life. I became completely uninterested     2    my upcoming graduation, the senior-class play and the prom (班级舞会).But my mother, in the midst of her own grief,     3    not hear of my skipping any of those things.

The day before my father died, my mother and I     4    (go) shopping for a prom dress. We’d found a spectacular one, with yards and yards of dotted Swiss in red, white and blue,     5     made me feel like Scarlett O’ Hara,     6     it was the wrong size. When my father died, I forgot about the dress.

My mother didn’t. The day before the prom, I found that dress - in the right size - draped majestically over the living-room sofa. It wasn’t just delivered, still in the box. It     7    (present) to me - beautifully, artistically, lovely. I didn’t care if I had a new dress or not. But my mother did.

She wanted her children to feel     8    (love) and lovable, creative and imaginative, filled with a sense     9     there was magic in the world and beauty even in the face of adversity. In truth, my mother wanted her children to see     10     much like the gardenia - lovely, strong and perfect - with a feeling of magic and perhaps a hit of mystery.

My mother died ten days after I married. I was 22 years old. That was the year the gardenias stopped coming.

I teach a course in marine biology at a college in central Maine. In order to give each student the individualized attention he or she     1    (deserve), I cap the class size at 15. Some years back, while calling out names from the roster (花名册) on the first day, I noticed a gray-haired woman of about 70. She     2    (hang) about at the door, with her new books like a schoolgirl.

“I’m not on the roster,” she volunteered, clearly self-conscious about all the     3    (seat) 18-year-olds looking her over. “But I was wondering if I     4    just sit in on the first class, to see what it’s about.”

There were already 15 in the class, but this woman’s eagerness impressed me, so I invited her to have a seat.

I began by chatting informally with the class to get a feel for how much knowledge they were bringing to     5    course. The result of open admissions is that professors are faced with very uneven crops of students, many of     6     know relatively little about the world around them.

In marine biology I like to see if they know the difference between fishes and seagoing mammals (哺乳动物). I often hold up a sponge (海绵) in the hope     7     someone will recognize it as an animal rather than a plant. I talk about the difference between a sea and an ocean.

8     I questioned, most of my new students remained silent. But Natalie, the older woman, was on the edge of her seat,     9    (volunteer) answers with the quickness of a game show contestant. In time, I felt as if it were just she and I engaged in a private conversation. At the end of class, she came up to me and apologized for being the “extra” student. “I certainly wish I could take this course,’’ she said. “Will you offer it next week?” Alarmed at the prospect of losing her, I acted quickly to relieve     10    concern. “I’ll see you next class,” I said.

In a butcher’s store, Laura saw her Strycon’s colleague Jorge, an engineer, selling pork. However, the man     1    (prove) to be William, a butcher. The     2    (follow) Monday at Strycon, Laura told Jorge about her funny misunderstanding. Jorge laughed and told her that he did have a twin named Carlos, but they didn’t resemble each other     3    appearance. At that moment, Laura seemed to realize something.

Laura wondered whether she should tell Jorge about his double. That question tugged (拉) at her until Sept. 9     4    Laura showed William’s photo to Jorge. Jorge stared at the image and said in surprise, “That’s me?!”

Out of curiosity, Jorge started looking through William’s Facebook images     5    (find) out more. Much to his surprise, the friend sitting next to his double had a face that Jorge     6    (know) for years—it was the face of his twin brother, Carlos.

After Jorge returned home, he seated Carlos down in front of the laptop and started clicking on photos, showing him the photo of:William alongside Carlos’s double     7    (name) Wilber. Unlike Jorge, whose first reaction to the photo was to lean in and stare, Carlos sprang back     8    something had pushed him hard in the chest. Jorge told him what he learned from Laura that day. The young men in the photo     9    (raise) on a remote farm in Santander. According to their Facebook pages, they shared the same birth place as Jorge and Carlos in late December 1988. The truth came out     10    they were actually mixed-up brothers. Parents from two families took twin babies back by mistake at birth.

Few people ever took notice of Mr. Jimmy Tan whenever he entered a room. He was a shy, quiet and simple man who     1     (prefer) to keep to himself in public. On the other hand, Mr. Thomas Kim, a fellow scientist, was a man everyone would notice on the streets. He wore bright outfits with huge flower prints, spoke with a booming voice, and his laughter could     2     (hear) from all corners of a room.     3     the differences in character, Mr. Kim and Mr. Tan were also great rivals (竞争者) at work in the Institute of Future Science.

4     Christmas Eve, everyone left work early to celebrate the special occasion, except Mr. Tan and Mr. Kim. They were in their laboratory     5     (analyze) the results of their latest experiments. Mr. Tan realized that something special was taking place in his experiment — the bacteria he had cultured     6     (growing) extremely quickly under high pressure and at a very low temperature. After noting down the findings in his notebook, he left the room to prepare for another round of tests. Shortly after, Mr. Kim entered.

“Hey Jimmy,” Mr. Kim called out, “do you have     7     extra copy of the laboratory booking form?”

There was no reply, so Mr. Kim looked through Mr. Tan’s things. He soon found Mr. Tan’s notebook and was surprised     8     (see) that Mr. Tan had managed to make one of the most important discoveries in modern science. He then looked into the deep-freeze cupboard     9     a dish containing the bacteria was kept. He put them into his pocket and returned to his own laboratory.

Mr. Tan came back an hour later to find his notebook and the dish missing. He knew that Mr. Kim     10     (take) them and went to Mr. Kim’s laboratory to find out. When he opened the door, he found Mr. Kim lying on the floor motionless. The deadly bacteria had been handled improperly.

My wife Laura and I were on the beach, with three of our children, taking picture birds near our home in Alaska when we spotted a bear. The bear was thin and small,     1     (move) aimlessly.

Just a few minutes later, I heard my daughter shouting, “Dad! The bear is right behind us!” An aggressive bear will usually rush forward     2     (frighten) away its enemy but suddenly stop at the last minute. This one was silent and its ears pinned back --- the sign of an animal that is going in for the kill. And it was a cold April day. The bear behaved abnormally, probably     3     hunger.

I held my camera tripod(三脚架)in both hands to form a barrier as the bear rushed into me. Its huge head was level with my chest and shoulders, and the tripod stuck across     4     mouth. It bit down and I found myself     5     (support) its weight. I knew I would not be able to hold it for long.

Even so, this was a fight I had to win; I was all that stood between the bear and my family,     6     would stand little chance of running faster than a brown bear.

The bear hit at the camera, cutting it off the tripod. I raised my left arm to protect my face: the beast held tightly on the tripod and pressed it into my side. My arm could not move, and I sensed that my bones were going to break.

Drawing back my free hand, I     7     (strike)the bear as hard as I could for five to six times. The bear opened its mouth and grasped its fur,     8     (try) to push it away. I was actually wrestling with the bear at this point. Then, as suddenly as it had begun, the fight ended. The bear moved back toward the forest, before returning for another attack -- The first time I felt panic.

Apparently     9     (satisfy) that we caused no further threat, the bear moved off, destroying a fence as it went. My arm was injured, but the outcome for us     10     hardly have been better. I’m proud that my family remained clear-headed when panic could have led to a very different outcome.

As a man who has already stepped into the tomb of love, I always have a feeling that it is my obligation to warn those guys who     1     (not; marry) so far or are about to do that of the danger involved in marriage. Those simple-minded men can easily get     2     “killed”, if they don’t know that comes with marriage.

Since I am a quick learner, it didn’t take me long to find out     3     a man needs to do to survive a marriage. Here are the 7 golden principles, which I would like to call “Marriage Survival Tips for Man”. Ready to take notes?

No.1: Anything     4     (request) by your wife should be doubtless taken as your priority in your to-do list. Whether it is to mop the floor or babysit your son, do it immediately and do it for life, idiot! Because the more times she has to ask you to do that, the     5     (patient) she will be.

No.2: Caution! Do not argue with your wife!     6     reasonable you think you are, you will always end up saying sorry to her Trust me. As a man, the last thing you want to do is to get into an argument with a woman. Women are not supposed     7     (reason) with. They are not designed that way. (Pardon me for being such a male chauvinist (直男炎). Deep down, I totally support feminism.) So unless you want to start a full-scale war you can never win, otherwise apologize to her the moment you two make eye contact.

No.3: Always give positive feedbacks     8     any questions raised by her. For example, if she wants to buy a pair of high-heels or a fancy coat, say yes! Of course, always saying yes will cost you a fortune but at least it can save your life! And     9     you are alive, money does grow on trees! But when the questions are related to her weight, stay with a simple life-saving rule: for God’s sake, she is not even a little bit fat! Calling her fat would be viewed as a horrible crime which deserves a death sentence!

No 4: Sorry man! I can’t make this up anymore. Her Majesty     10     (call) me again. I have to go now! Pray for me!

This weekend many families in America will celebrate Mother’s Day. The event dates back to   May 9, 1914,     1     America’s President Wilson   established the official     holiday. Some people had begun campaigning for the holiday a few years     2     (early).   Finally in 1914, the president made it official. He declared that each second Sunday in May     3     (dedicate) to thanking the nation’s mothers. He also ordered all government     buildings     4     (display) the national flag on that day. According to President Wilson, this was done “as a public expression of …love …for the mothers of our country.”

Before long, people in other   countries     5     (begin) asking for a similar   holiday to celebrate their mothers. Mexico celebrated its first official Mother’s Day on May 10, 1922. May 10th became their annual holiday because the country preferred a fixed date to     6     that changed.

Other countries are happy to share the day with the United States. Some on the list include Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Japan and Turkey.

Oddly enough, the U.S. Congress rejected a Mother’s Day resolution at first. Today, though, Mother’s Day is a highly popular holiday. It’s also very successful commercially. Along with giving cards,   candy   and flowers,     7     (take) moms out for brunch is a very popular gesture. America’s National Restaurant Association says Mother’s Day is the year’s most popular day for eating out.

But why do we honor our mothers? Many moms lovingly dedicate their lives to their children. Moms sacrifice time, sleep and often their own dreams. Moms try to provide a strong foundation     8     children   can   build   their   lives. With     9     (love)   care,   mothers guide their children toward adulthood.

When we consider everything our mothers have done for us, how can we not honor them? There’s no need to wait for a national holiday, though. Every day is a great opportunity to tell our mothers     10     they mean to us.

I was eighteen, summer fading, when my parents drove me to my university apartment. It was my first apartment.     1     (walk) my parents solemnly back to their car, I noticed that my mother had tears in her eyes. I     2     (struggle) to hold back my own. Such a strong woman was she     3     it was rare to see such a show of emotion. At the time, I was rather surprised. Being the youngest of five children, I thought that my parents were accustomed to     4     (let) go. But maybe it’s something that never gets any easier,     5     many practice swings you get. As my parents drove off, I realized that they would return to an empty home,     6     all of their children leaving to pursue dreams and lives of their own. Their nest, full of love and joy for so long, was now empty. Relishing (憧憬) my new-found freedom, I concentrated on my college life. My parents did their best to give me space to learn and grow, even if I neglected to call or visit. It was a time of “firsts,” and a taste of first “lasts.”

I have recently been playing Travel Frog, a mobile game that has me emotionally     7     (influence). In the game you gather resources, send your frog on his adventures and your payoff is, *drum roll please* ... postcards. That’s right, postcards. I thought it was a silly, overly-simplistic game at first, but then it started to bring back memories from long ago.

While the game lacks the narrative detail or the interactivity of other games, you have a lesson     8     (learn) from your itinerant (四处奔波的) “Frog Son”. You do not control when he sets off on his adventures,     9     can you be sure that your hard work will land you a coveted (梦寐以求的) postcard. This game, however, has emotionally affected many players. They     10     (remind) of their parents who restlessly await their return home, their familiar voices, their love. Parents sacrifice a large part of themselves for their children. It is a sacrifice that can only be paid back with love.
