It was my tenth birthday and I would have the biggest party ever. The guest list, which I kept at the back of my homework assignment folder, began with a few close friends. But in the two weeks before that special Friday night, it had quickly grown from seven girls to a total of seventeen. Nearly every girl in my fifth grade class had been invited to sleep over at my house for a big celebration. I was especially happy when each guest I invited excitedly accepted the invitation. It would be a night of scary stories, pizza and lots of presents. But as I later realized, I would truly treasure only one gift I received that night.
The family room was a flurry of shouts and bursts of laughter. We had just finished a game of Twister and were lining up for the limbo when the doorbell rang. "Nothing will ever be the same again," Ally whispered. She sank slowly into her father's favorite chair and stared at the small American flag on his desk. It was the flag which Chief Russell had given to her after the funeral last summer, when he hugged her and told her how proud the Police Department was of her dad's work for them. A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

The summers in my hometown of Desert Springs were exceptionally hot, and all that people wanted to do was nothing but swimming in the public pool. This also meant that the most coveted (令人垂涎的) summer job for a high school student was to be a swimming instructor. You got to spend the whole summer in the pool and it was really glamorous (有魅力的), too!
However, I did not get a job as a swimming instructor. I tried really hard—I’m a good swimmer and I practiced my interview answers for weeks beforehand, but the pool offered me a job as a lifeguard instead.
Being a lifeguard wasn’t nearly as fun or glamorous as being a swimming instructor. Mostly, being a lifeguard meant sitting next to the pool, sweating in the hot sun, and making sure everyone obeyed the rules. “Being a lifeguard is an important job,” my dad kept reminding me, “and you have to be one of the best swimmers in the whole town. If someone gets hurt or in distress in the pool, it’s your job to rescue them.” I knew that, and I wanted to do well at such an important job, but I was still disappointed. No one at school next year would be impressed with a story of how I sat in a chair all summer and got sunburnt.
But finally I took the job anyway. Once I began work, I quickly learned that being a lifeguard was much more involved than I thought. With half of the town at the pool at any given time, there were a lot of people to keep an eye on.
I was also still jealous of the swimming instructors, who I could see every day from my seat in the lifeguard chair, which was almost eight feet tall to give me a good view and right by the side of the pool. The swimming instructors always looked like they were having so much fun, giving their lessons and playing around during their breaks in the cool, inviting water.
One afternoon, midway through the summer, I was arguing with a group of elementary schoolers about the no running rule when the sound of a woman shouting caught my attention. “Carey! Carey!” I glanced around and saw a woman searching frantically (疯狂地) for something. Immediately, my eyes went to the pool.

My Dad’s Best Flower
I remember my first home was a small apartment on the second floor with a lovely and spacious balcony (阳台). When my mom was busy in the kitchen, she let me stay on the balcony watching the kids playing in the street. On that balcony I played sometimes with my elder sister, Maria. She was seven years old and when my mon was absent she was like a mother to me. The balcony was a great hobby place for my father. After his work he used to grow carnations (康乃馨) in the flower boxes. His carnations were red, pink and white, and everyone appreciated them for their beauty.
He took care of them with so much love and devotion. He dealt carefully with his flowers like a mother taking care of her baby. Many times I sat on the floor of the balcony for hours observing him and his lovely flowers with patience. He was always doing something on that balcony. He was watering them every day, cleaning the balcony floor, changing the potting soil and when the stems (茎) were thick, strong and high enough, he started his improvement operation like a doctor.
My dad took a tiny knife and with his left hand he held the stem of the carnation and measured the height. Then he made a small mark on the stem with his finger. Afterwards he made a sharp cut with the knife, just enough to fit in a grain of barley (插穗的芽). Then he bandaged the stem with a small bandage. His job was then to water the plants and to take care of them. “No one should touch them” , he said to mom. Every day, when he came home from work he went straight to the balcony.
Mom used to tell us: “Do not touch daddy’s flowers. ” For us it was a fascinating experience to watch how the small stems were growing and making flowers. When the carnations had grown big enough, my dad enjoyed watching them every day. We the kids did too.

Although many people on the beach shouted at them and asked them to swim back immediately, they continued to swim further from the beach. The wind became stronger；all of a sudden, one boy was washed away by a rising wave and the other two boys were so scared that they shouted for help and swam as fast as they could to the beach. However, no one on the beach risked his life to save the boy as the waves were so alarming；and the crowd were asked to move to a safe place.
