1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

George’s mother was very poor. Instead of having bright blazing fires in winter, she had nothing to burn but dry sticks, which George picked up from under the trees and hedges.

One fine day in July, his sick mother sent George to the woods, which were about two miles from the village in which she lived. He was to stay there all day to get as much wood as he could collect.

It was a bright, sunny day, and George worked very hard; so that by the time the sun was high, he was hot, and wished for a cool place where he might rest and eat his dinner. While he hunted for a spot about the bank he saw among the moss some fine, wild strawberries, which were a bright scarlet with ripeness.

”How good these will be my bread and butter!“thought George. Lining his little cap with leaves he set to work eagerly to gather all he could find and then seated himself by the brook.

It was a pleasant place, and George felt happy and contented. He thought how much his mother would like to see him there, and to be there herself, instead of in her dark close room in the village.

George thought of all this and just as he was lifting the first strawberry to his mouth, he said to himself, ”How much mother would like these!“and he stopped, putting the strawberry back again. ”Shall I save them for her?“said he, thinking how much they would refresh her, yet still looking at them with a longing eye.

”I will eat half, and take the other half to her, “said he at last, and he divided them into two heaps(t). But each heap looked so small, that he put them together again.

”I will only taste one“thought he. As he again lifted it to his mouth, he saw that he had taken the finest and he put it back. ”I will keep them all for her, "he said with great happiness, and he covered them up nicely, ready to take home.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I hadn’t spoken with Samantha in months. Perhaps it was because I was jealous (嫉妒的). After all, she seems to have everything a girl could want. I used to admire her too until she proved that she could draw better, run faster, and score higher in every other subject.

My family was going to go camping at the lake on summer holiday like we always do. Only this time, my Mom announced some very unwelcome news. ”Hanna! Guess what? I’ve invited the McCarthy’s family on our camping trip. “How does that sound?” “Terrible,” I groaned. However, Mom wasn’t changing her mind.

At the lake, my family organized ourselves in the cabin (小木屋) while the McCarthy’s set up their tent. I spent the week ignoring Samantha and staying inside reading. I thought I could get away without talking to her, but it wasn’t so.

On the fourth night of our trip, a thunderstorm struck. The McCarthy’s decided to spend the night in our cabin because they didn’t feel safe in the tent. I, of course, had to share a room with Samantha.

I woke up late at night. The storm had gotten worse. I desperately needed to use the toilet. Our cabin didn’t have one, so I had to use an outhouse a short walk away.

I got out of bed, being careful not to wake anyone up. However, when I was reaching for my flashlight, I accidentally stepped on Samantha’s arm. She woke up immediately. Knowing that I would go to the bathroom alone, she insisted to go with me.

Outside, it was raining hard. Lightning flashed across the sky and the thunder was so loud it seemed to shake the cabin. When we went back and rounded the comer to the cabin, we saw a big tree lay across the entrance of the cabin, blocking the door. There was no way to get back in.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Have you ever lost something you borrowed from others? Well, my situation is close to that, but instead of losing what I borrowed, I wrecked it.

I live in San Francisco, where it seldom snows. But if you get in a car and drive a few hours, you’ll arrive at these beautiful snow-covered mountains. Last week, my friend Ollie and his grandmother Mary invited me to go skiing with them. It was colder than I’d expected. Mary offered to lend me her scarf. It was the softest, warmest, most awesome scarf, and Mary had knit (编织) it herself.

“These old knees need a rest!” Mary said after a couple of hours of skiing. “You two go ahead and take another run. I’ll be in the lodge, reading by the fire,”

So Ollie and 1 took one more ride on the ski lift up the mountain. As we looked around at the trees and watched people zipping down the slopes, I said, “This one piece of yarn (毛线) on Mary’s scarf keeps tickling my chin.”

I pulled on the end of the yarn, thinking it was just a loose piece that had separated from the scarf. But the more I pulled, the longer the piece became.

“You’d better stop.” Ollie said, “The scarf is unravelling (散开)!”

When I took off the scarf to see what she meant, I was horrified. “Oh, no! I just turned Mary’s special scarf into half a special scarf and half a big pile of yarn!”

It was one-of-a-kind-thing that I'll never be able to replace! “What am I going to do?” I asked my best friend.

Ollie suggested, “You could say you accidentally dropped it.”

“I hope you’re kidding.” I shook my head.

“You know 1 am joking around,” said Ollie, “Honesty is more important to Mary than anything. You just have to tell her the truth.”

Right then, it was our turn to get off the lift. 1 shoved the wrecked scarf into my jacket pocket and skied extra slowly down the hill to the lodge.

I wasn’t in a giant hurry to tell Mary the news.

6 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

There was once a troubled family. The parents spoiled their children. The son, John, loved to play video games all day long when summer vacation was around and he did not like to study. The daughter, Emily, on the other hand, loved studying without play. To her, video games were for foolish people who were unable to achieve anything useful. Life went on with parents complaining and not changing anything.

One day two new neighbors arrived in their neighborhood. One lived on the right side of John’s house while the other lived on the left side of John’s house. These two people were twins. They did not communicate with anyone other than themselves. John and his family felt uncomfortable living right between them. Strange sounds came from their houses every midnight until the afternoon. People heard and saw thunder and lightning coming from the house. After a couple of weeks of lightning flashing, machines roaring, this disturbed every household. Everyone could not help but wonder what their new neighbors were doing. It was whispered that they were inventing a time machine in secret.

People were beginning to dislike them. Every moment they heard these noises, they felt like something was going to explode soon. To deal with this problem John and Emily’s parents walked to both houses to speak with the owners. But on each door hung a sign that said, “DO NOT DISTURB!” They tried knocking the door and no one responded or came out from the house. The machine noise kept going but once in a while it did stop for a small break before it continued. They tried nearly every day to get the attention of their new neighbors. But in the end they gave up. They decided to send their kids to get their attention instead. So they made a plan and the kids successfully entered the neighbor’s houses.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Emma had two exams that day — physics and history. She really hated physics. It was her worst subject. Alice looked at her, and then looked away quickly. Emma thought Alice looked pleased, because she didn’t have a problem with physics, she didn’t have a problem with anything...Miss Perfect!

“I thought we were friends, but she hasn’t spoken to me for two weeks now. she promised to help me go over for the physics exam too, but then she’s forgotten all my calls and texts. And when I rang her house, her mum just told me she was busy.” Emma thought angrily. At that moment, Mr. Read asked all the students into the exam room.

Emma couldn’t answer some physics questions. Suddenly she saw Alice sitting two rows in front of her. Emma couldn’t believe it! Alice was holding her phone on her knee under the table and reading from it. Is that how Alice always got such good grades? She felt really angry at Alice, and thought about telling the teacher, but...“Stop writing,” said Mr. Read and started to collect the exam papers. Oh no, Emma hadn’t answered two of the questions. She was going to fail again!

Emma wanted to talk to Alice at lunchtime, but she couldn’t find her anywhere. Emma went to the library to prepare for the history exam, which was her favorite. But she couldn’t concentrate. “Unfair! Alice was getting good grades by cheating all that time.” She thought about telling a teacher, but everyone would hate her if she did that. Just then, Mr. Read walked past her table. “Mr. Read...”

Emma was sitting behind Alice again in the history exam that afternoon. Mr. Read wanted her to look at Alice and agreed if she saw that Alice was cheating in the exam.

8 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was a Friday afternoon in July, the last day of term. The school holidays were starting. Six weeks of freedom! Jenny was walking home in the hot sun. She always thought, “Is this just a nice day, or is it global warming?” But today she was happy and laughing, and full of plans for the holidays like going to the seaside, hanging out in the park, going to the cinema, and just lying in bed in the morning, doing nothing.

Later, at dinner, with the cooked chicken on the table, her family were talking about cars. Jenny said, “Dad, your car makes too much noise and causes too much pollution. You had better change it for a new one.” Her father agreed with her and said that he was tired of going to work by car every day. He decided to work at home sometimes, but it meant he was going to need an office. “Which room are you going to use?” asked Jenny. “Well, I need a lot of space. I will cut the old tree at the end of the garden and build a new office there.” Jenny said, “No! Please don’t cut the old tree!”But her father insisted, “Sorry. I have to.” Jenny was shocked. Her face turned red with anger, her eyes flashing. “That’s so unfair!” Jenny said, jumping up. She walked quickly to the door and said, “I’m leaving home. I will go to my grandpa who understands and cares about me!” Then she walked out. “Bang!” She shut the door behind her angrily.

Jenny ran up to her room. She was so upset that she couldn’t help sobbing. She couldn’t believe what she had heard. The old tree and her tree house! With tears in her eyes, she emptied her school bag and filled it up with clothes, her MP3 player, and her favorite books. Jenny waked quickly down the stairs towards the front door. But then she stopped. She couldn’t leave home. They were going to cut down her tree! What could she do?

9 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

My mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment.

She ran a small shop at a flea market (跳蚤市场) and collected old clothes and some other things to sell for the money we needed. Once during elementary school, it was field day, and my mom came. I was so embarrassed and wondered how could she do this to me? I threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school, my schoolmates asked me, “Your mom only has one eye?” and laughed at me.

I was so angry with my mom and wished that she would just disappear from this world. So I said to my mom, “Why don't you have the other eye? You're only gonna (将要) make me a joke!” My mom trembled with shock, and said in an apologetic tone, “I'm so sorry that I only have one eye, and I was an embarrassment for you. But I was so proud of my son to see a whole new world for me with that_eye. I will leave right now. Sorry!” My mom turned around and staggered away.

For the words I had said to her earlier, there was something biting at me in the corner of my heart. Even so, I hated my oneeyed mom and our desperate poverty. Maybe because my mom hadn't punished me, I didn't think I had hurt her feelings very badly.

I told myself that I would become successful in the near future, so I studied very hard. Later I got accepted by the Seoul University. I left my mother and came to Seoul to study. I never went back to visit my mom.

Then I got married there. I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. Now I am living happily as a successful man. I enjoy the life in Seoul because it's a place that doesn't remind me of my mom and my past. This kind of happiness was getting bigger and bigger, until one day someone knocked at my door.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Every Saturday, Grandpa and I walk to the nursing home (养老院) a few blocks away from our house to visit some of the old people who live there.

First we visit Mrs. Sokol. I call her “The Cook.” She likes to talk about the time when she was a well-known cook back in Russia. People would come from miles around, just to taste her famous chicken soup.

Next we visit Mr. Meyer. I call him “The Joke Man.” He tells us jokes, and laughs at his own jokes, shaking up and down and turning red in the face. Grandpa and I can’t help but laugh along with him, even when the jokes aren’t very funny.

Next door is Mr. Lipman. I call him “The Singer” because he loves to sing for us. Whenever he does, his beautiful voice fills the air, so clear and strong that we always sing along with him.

Then we visit Mrs. Kagan, “The Grandmother,” who shows us pictures of her grandchildren. They’re all over the room, in frames (画框) and even taped to the walls.

One day Grandpa got sick and had to go to the hospital. The doctors said they didn’t think he would ever get better.

Saturday came. How could I go visiting the nursing home without Grandpa? Then I remembered what Grandpa once told me: “Nothing should stand in the way of doing a good deed (行为).” So I went alone. Everyone was happy to see me. They were surprised when they didn’t see Grandpa. When I told them that he was sick and in the hospital, they were sad. They told me that Grandpa would have a complete recovery.

The Cook went on to reveal (透露) some of her secret recipes (食谱). The Joke Man told me his latest jokes. The Singer sang a song especially for me. The Grandmother showed me more pictures. After a while, I said goodbye to everyone.

A few days later, Grandpa was still in the hospital. He was not eating, he could not sit up and he could hardly speak. I went to the corner of the room so Grandpa wouldn’t see me cry.
