4 . How do you create lots of affordable housing with limited materials, labor, and other resources? One group of researchers at the University of Maine has come up with a solution: hook up a 3D printer.
The United States faces rising rents and housing shortages, but Maine has its own unique challenges: The state needs another estimated 20,000 homes to meet the current demand for low-income housing. It also has the oldest average population in the nation, with a median age of 44.7, an issue that exacerbates the state’s labor shortage.
BioHome3D, the prototype (样品房), was the first 3D-printed home made entirely of organic, renewable materials. It is 600 square feet in total, with a modern roof and a wide front porch. The interior contains an open-concept kitchen, living, and dining area with wooden walls and tall windows. The single bedroom doubles as an office, and a bathroom completes the space.
The materials used to manufacture the 3D-printed home also help address another issue in Maine: the shutting of several paper factories that once processed byproducts from local sawmills (锯木厂).
Dagher said, “We asked ourselves, could we print a home with that material?” The answer, thus far, has been yes. The prototype, which was shown on Nov. 21 at the University of Maine’s Orono campus, is now undergoing tests to see how the building fares during Maine’s harsh winters.
Though Dagher’s lab is not the first to 3D print a house, they are the first to use a 3D printer to create the entirety of the structure, as well as the first to use reusable materials. “There’s a lot of potential, not only to solve a crisis in Maine, but to assist in a solution to the housing crisis nationally as well,” he said.

5 . Morgan Hartman was born with both physical and cognitive (认知的) disabilities. For years though, she lacked a diagnosis (诊断). One thing she did have: a happy spirit. Her dad, Cordon Hartman, never wanted to see that spirit dulled. But unfortunately, at times it was.
“In 2006, we were on a family vacation where I watched Morgan not be able to participate in a pool activity with three other children, and it was simply because of her lack of expression,” Gordon said. “It almost puts a lump (肿块) in your throat because it gives you a sad feeling that all Morgan wanted was to participate. She just wanted to play.”
After seeing this, Gordon started on a quest to create a space where no one felt left out. His idea: an inclusive theme park. He had experience as a builder and enlisted help from other experts to turn his dream into what is now Morgan’s Wonderland. The park, opened in 2010, is believed to be the only one like it in the world and it has expanded to a sports center and camp with an outdoor adventure park. Across all the recreation areas, all are fully accessible to everyone with physical and mental disabilities.
Gordon has seen firsthand how an accessible theme park can change lives through joy. “I met a couple from Mexico City. And they had never had a chance to, because of their special needs, ever a chance to play in water together. They heard about it and came here. They cried with me and talked to me about how this was the most wonderful opportunity they ever had,” he said.
Morgan’s Wonderland has welcomed visitors from dozens of countries and all 50 states of the USA — and those with disabilities enter for free. “It’s the small things that make the big difference: Having fun,” Gordon said. “Here at Morgan’s Wonderland and all the different Morgan’s venues, you don’t watch. You participate.”

9 . One morning soon, you’ll get on your bike and ride from one end of America to the other, because the Great American Rail Trail is 53% complete, making a cross-country bike ride closer to a reality.
The idea of a bike trail(小路) made up of scenic paths, trails and former rail lines from Washington DC to Washington State has been 30 years in the making. Now, with more than 50% of the trail up and running, the project, run by the Rails to Trails in cooperation with local authorities, is building up, with hundreds of miles of trails in development now. Though not entirely complete, the rail trail has drawn people of all types.
Last August, Ryan Gardill and a colleague biked 350 miles from Pittsburgh to Washington DC. Their travels took them through some beautiful and historical parts of the American East. “The trail connected me to our revolutionary and industrial history. Most of the towns on the trail were once important to America.”
The major goal of the trail is to provide the American public with the opportunity to explore their beautiful country, without getting in their car. A secondary objective is to bring prosperity(繁荣) back to the small towns and cities that once prospered along the country’s now diminished rail system, according to National Geographic.
One of these is Muncie, Indiana, a city located on a former rail system and a part of the Rail Trail. The city is already seeing the economic benefits of the trail. “A large majority of our customers are local, but the Rail Trail could help grow tourism,” said Jason Allardt, owner of the historic Kirk’s Bike Shop.
This is the hope for many once-prosperous towns and cities all throughout America, though it may take nearly 20 years to get the entire trail up and running.
