文章大意:这是一篇说明文,文章主要讲述丹麦的一项研究表明,在农村长大可能有助于成年后保持良好的心理健康。

4 . A study from Denmark suggests that growing up in the countryside may help you stay in good mental health as an adult. The research involving nearly a million people found children, who live in green areas, are 55% less likely to develop a mental health disorder in later life.

The researchers believe green spaces help create friendly communities where people enjoy talking to others, as well as encouraging people to exercise. This helps improve a child’s cognitive (认知的) development, which may positively affect their mental health.

The research was led by Dr Kristine Engemann from Aarhus University in Denmark. The researchers used satellite data collected between 1985 and 2013 to assess (评估) the green space around the participants’ childhood homes. This data was then compared against the risk of developing mental disorders later in life. “After mastering a huge amount of data, as well as other information such as house location and disease diagnoses from Denmark, we compared it with satellite images which show green space of individual when growing up,” Dr Engemann said.

Results showed that those who grew up surrounded by lots of green space were less at risk of a mental health problem. Dr Engemann said, “We find that the longer you have been surrounded by green space from birth and up to the age of 10, the lower the risk of developing a mental disorder. There is increasing evidence that the natural environment plays a more important role in mental health than thought before. Our study gives us a better understanding of its importance across the broader population.”

Noise, air pollution, infections (传染病) and poor social and economic conditions increase the risk of a mental disorder, according to the study. The researchers are calling on city planners to design greener cities to improve the public’s mental health.

A.A further research needs to be conducted.
B.Green areas can help cure mental problems.
C.Green space throughout childhood matters a lot.
D.City planners pay little attention to green areas.

5 . It is three o'clock in the afternoon, yet there is not a single reader in the reading room of the Braille Library of China (BLC). However, the librarian on duty is quite busy: she keeps one eye on WeChat, while simultaneously checking another App for new messages, as well as standing ready to answer the phone that might ring at any time. All calls and messages come from visually impaired (受损的) people seeking that most essential of societal needs-access to knowledge.

Since its foundation in 1994, the BLC has operated a mailing service for the visually poor so that they can just write or pick up the phone to request the books they need, then wait at home for them to arrive. After finishing the books, they only need to attach a prepared address card to the mail bag that comes with the books, then put it in the mailbox. All are free of charge. This service has enabled many visually impaired people to achieve their dreams of learning at home without needing to travel to the library.

A smart listening device (设备), which looks like an old-fashioned cell phone, is another service the BLC offers to visually impaired people. The user just needs to press the buttons under the audio guidance to gain access to audiobooks stored on the BLC website, making access to literature for the visually impaired even easier. Also available is a screen-reading software. When the user operates a normal computer, the software will read out loud the information displayed, including image descriptions.

The BLC provides a unique service for fully sighted people, too. Inside its building there is a windowless room, about 20 square meters in size, which becomes totally dark when the doors are closed. Anyone can enter and explore the black room by touching the specially designed walls. It takes only eight minutes to experience, but provides visitors with a lifetime of gratitude for the eyesight with which they are blessed.

Chez Justine

7 . I am lucky enough to live in a house that has a walled garden. In fact, this was one of the main features which encouraged us to buy this house.    1    . Apple, plum, and cherry trees are growing well here. Since we moved in, we have been turning this area into a richer forest garden.

2    . Walled gardens can be created from the very beginning using recyclable materials. They can also be created in old industrial or agricultural sites, where the roofs of structures are no longer in good repair. In fact, our walled garden was made from an old cattle shelter.

I live in an area where temperatures can fall as low as around -5℃.    3    The stone walls help in temperature regulation(控制). Plants benefit from the protected microclimate in the garden all year round.   I find I can successfully grow several plants that would not usually grow well outdoors.

Stone walls can provide a quieter space than other gardens surrounded by fences. We live in the countryside but are near a busy road. Enter this garden, however, and we might be in a different world protected from traffic noise and other outside distractions(使人分心的事).     4    .

Finally, it is also worthwhile considering that when a garden is surrounded by walls, it provides a range of choices for vertical(垂直的) growing.     5     Fruit trees can be trained to grow up the walls to make the most of the space. There are plants to choose from for each wall of a walled garden, each of which offers different conditions.

A.People are likely to live in a warmer place
B.This wall can turn the garden into a quiet heaven
C.Such kind of places can make excellent wall gardens
D.Climbers and small plants can find their places along the edges
E.The stone walls of this garden protected a collection of fruit trees
F.There may be arguments about where to create walled gardens
G.However, the garden warms more quickly in spring and cools more slowly in autumn

8 . High school students perform better on tests if they are in a classroom with a view(视野)of a green space, instead of a windowless room or a room with a view of built-up space, according to research from the University of Illinois Department of Landscape Architecture.

“It is the first to show a relationship between studying with a green view and students performance, said William Sullivan head of the research team. It’s a significant finding that if you have a green view outside your window, you’ ll do better on tests.”Sullivan hopes the results of their research will lead to policy(政策)changes. Changes in school design, for example“would be a much better thing than any of the things we spend money on in secondary education today ,Sullivan said.

The research included 94 students at five central Illinois high schools Students were randomly assigned(随机分配)to one of three kinds of classrooms-windowless, with a window looking out onto built-up space, or with a window looking out onto green space. Each kind of classroom had a similar size and layout. The students took part in one-on-one experiments in which they did 30 minutes of activities that included a proofreading exercise, a speech and a math exercise. Following the activities the students were given an attention test which asked them to repeat a series of(一连串)numbers.

The findings: Students did better on both study activities and the attention test if they were in a classroom with a green view ,Sullivan said.

The researchers suggest their findings can help planners and policymakers improve students' well-being and learning.
