The history of Chinese garden architecture dates     1     the Shang and Zhou dynasties. During that period, Chinese kings and the nobility began developing forests and woods for hunting, which could    2    (see) as early gardens. The Han Dynasty advanced the concept of these "natural gardens" by adding living quarters and animals.

Traditional Chinese garden architecture was well developed in the Tang Dynasty. During this era, the    3    (construct) of beautiful gardens developed into what would include man-made hills, pools, and fountains.    4    time went on, this man-made beauty was able to successfully mix well with the beauty of the natural environment.

The Ming Dynasty    5     (follow) by the Qing Dynasty saw the heyday (最兴盛的时期) of Chinese garden architecture. Especially in the Qing Dynasty, emperors gathered skillful craftsmen (工匠) from all over the country    6     (create) even more complicated gardens. Gardens in this period were no longer    7     (mere) places for fun, but also served as areas     8    more formal ceremonies could take place.

Also, gardens in different regions of China have different styles. In northern China, they're large and often designed in scenic mountain areas. The Summer Palace is a typical example. The gardens in the south are    9    (small) than those in the north but no less delicate. Famous gardens    10     (belong) to this type are popular in Jiangsu Province, such as Li Garden and the Lion Forest Garden.

The Jingshan Park    1     (locate) in Jingshan Front St. Xicheng District, Beijing. On Beijing’s Central Axis(中轴线) in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it is the imperial（帝国的） garden of the two dynasties. Many people may not know Jingshan is not a     2     (nature) mountain. So why did it appear on the Beijing Central Axis complex? And how did it come into being? It used to be part of the course of the Yongding River. Chinese ancestors     3     (use) the method of digging-a-lake-&-building-a-mountain. Since the Liao Dynasty, it     4     (pile) up for more than 700 years, then the scale of the mountain gradually formed. During the Yuan Dynasty, Jingshan was at the center, and an imperial palace was built to the south of it,     5     the Drum Tower was built to the north. Therefore, Jingshan not only became the benchmark of urban planning at that time,     6     formed a similar urban spatial pattern with Jingshan at the center. During the reign of Emperor Qianlong, the imperial court greatly expanded Jingshan, while also building a pavilion on each of the five peaks. Among the five pavilions(亭阁), the Wanchun Pavilion located on    7     top of the hill and on the central axis, with a relative height of 45.7 meters, is the     8     (high) and best scenic look-out on Beijing’s north-south Central Axis.     9     (look) south from here, you can see roofs of the Forbidden City are golden yellow. Jingshan is a creation of wisdom of the ancestors. It makes use of the waste brick and soil, and     10     (clever) accumulates them into the brightest pearl in the center of Beijing in the Ming Dynasty. It not only makes up for the single layout of the Central Axis complex, but also makes Beijing even more magnificent!

It doesn’t impress like George Washington’s plantation on the Potomac, but Lincoln’s home in downtown Springfield, Illinois,     1     （prove）irresistible to visitors since it opened to the public. Beautifully restored（修复）to its 1860 appearance, the house was Abraham and Mary Lincoln’s home for 17 years. In 1844 they bought it     2     $1,200 and some land from Charles Dresser, who performed their     3     （marry）ceremony in 1842.

When the house was built, it was much     4     （small）than it is today. Mary’s niece wrote, “The little home     5     （paint）white.” It was sweet and fresh. Mary loved it. She was extremely pretty, and her house was a reflection of     6     （she）, everything in good taste and in perfect order.

Although Mary loved flowers,     7     she nor her husband was known as a gardener. A long- time neighbor said they never planted trees and only kept a garden for one year. Mary’s sister, Frances Todd Wallace, often came over     8     （plant）flowers in the front yard.

    9     Lincolns enlarged the house to a full two-story in 1856 to meet the needs of their growing family. Three of the four Lincoln sons were born here. After Lincoln was elected President of the US in 1861, they rented the house and     10     （sell）most of their furniture.
