Michael kept looking at the clock on the classroom wall. He couldn’t wait for his Science lesson to end so as to get to his basketball practice on time. As soon as the bell rang to end the lesson, Michael grabbed his bag and dashed out of the classroom. As he turned the corner, he ran straight into a classmate, scattering the school books he was carrying all over the floor. No sooner had he said sorry and picked up all his belongings than he started to run again.
After the basketball practice, Michael hurried to join the other members of the school Debating Club. They had an important debate that day. To nobody’s surprise, Michael arrived late again, still wearing his sports clothes and sweating from basketball. Unfortunately, Michael hadn’t prepared his arguments properly and performed badly, letting his team down. Eventually, at the end of a long day at school, Michael arrived home, tired and unhappy.
In his bedroom, Michael sat down at his desk and sighed heavily as he looked at all his schoolbooks. He had to make preparations for the upcoming exams, but he could barely keep his eyes open. The next thing he remembered was his mother waking him up. He had fallen asleep with his head on the desk. As he sat up, his mother gently removed a sheet of paper that had stuck to his cheek. She smiled lovingly at her son and smoothed his untidy hair.
“So”, she began, “how was school today?”
Michael looked nervously at her and took a deep breath. “Well, to be honest, not so good, he said sheepishly. “I couldn’t focus on my lessons, I ran into a classmate and I let my debating team down. It doesn’t really get much worse than that, does it?”
“Well,” Michael’s mother said gently but seriously, “I think you have been taking on too much.”
Later that evening, before he fell into a restless sleep, Michael realized that things could not continue the way they were.

A Chair for My Mother
My mother works as a waitress in the Blue Tile Diner. After school sometimes I go to meet her there. Then her boss Josephine gives me a job too. When I finish, Josephine says, “Good work, honey,” and pays me. And every time, I put half of my money into the jar (罐子).
It takes a long time to fill a jar this big. Every day when my mother comes home from work, I take down the jar. My mama empties all her change from tips for me to count. Then we push all of the coins into the jar.
Sometimes my mama is laughing when she comes home from work. Sometimes she’s so tired she falls asleep while I count the money. Some days she has lots of tips. Some days she has only a few. Then she looks worried. But each evening every single shiny coin goes into the jar.
We sit in the kitchen to count the tips. Usually Grandma sits with us too. Often she has money in her old wallet for us. Whenever she gets a good bargain (划算的交易) on tomatoes or bananas or something she buys, she puts by the savings and they go into the jar.
When we can’t get a single other coin into the jar, we are going to take out all the money and go and buy a chair. Yes, a chair. A wonderful, beautiful, fat, soft armchair for Mama and Grandma. When Mama comes home, her feet hurt. “There’s no good place for me to rest my feet,” she says. When Grandma wants to sit back and cut up potatoes, she has to get as comfortable as she can on a hard kitchen chair.
So that is how come Mama brought home the biggest jar she could find and all the coins started to go into the jar.
Paragraph 1:
Now the jar is too heavy for me to lift down.

The excited sound of seventh-grade laughter and voices spilled down the hallway as the students filed into the gym. I weaved my way through the mass of people and sat down next to my best friend, Lauren.
“So, what exactly are we doing here?” she questioned.
“Well, according to Mrs. Marks, we’re supposed to be listening to a speech about bullying and peer pressure.”
As soon as the speaker started talking, I snapped to attention. She had this way about her, as if she knew how to reach into our minds and souls and make us think. I though about the kids who came to school every day, despite knowing that they would have to face cruel comment all day long.
One boy, in particular, came to mind. Every day, this boy came to school late, and I suspected it was because he needed to get medicine from the nurse. But this didn’t stop kids in the class from making fun of him. The boy would put his head down on his desk in shame. The worst, though, was when he tried to fight back. His attackers only laughed and continued the cruelty until the entire room was laughing at his expense.
As I sat in the auditorium, absorbing everything the speaker had to say, thoughts of this poor boy crept into my head.
“Now, before I leave today, I would like to give everyone here an opportunity to say anything he or she wants to on the subject of bullying or peer pressure. You may apologize to a friend, thank someone for his or her kindness, anything, And this is the one time I can promise that no one, will laugh at you.”
The stillness in the room made me believe her. Slowly, I saw a few hands raise tentatively (犹豫地) in the air behind me, One girl wanted to apologize to a friend she had been ignoring recently. Another thanked a boy for his kindness when she slipped on the steps the other day.
