2 . What are your favorite stories you learned as a child? What stories do you hope your loved ones will tell about you when you aren’t around?

Storytellers were once known as “liars”. This was not to say their stories weren’t true. But they were often exaggerated in colorful ways that brought a story to life.

I grew up in a family of “liars”. They all told stories. And I grew up to earn my living by writing stories. The stories I write about my family are always true. But I can’t always be sure of every detail, so I rely on imagination to fill in the gaps.

My grandmother’s stories changed a bit each time she told them, and I smiled at how her changes made a story better. I loved hearing her stories. And my grandchildren seem to love hearing mine.

“Tell it again, Nana!” they say. I do, and they start laughing before I get to the funny part. Recently, they begged to hear a Halloween story I’ve told countless times. Here it is:

Once upon a time, when I was 10, my mother told me to make costumes (服装) and take my brothers to go trick-or-treating. Denton was 4. He looked like a monkey. Joe was 6 and totally blind. I threw a sheet over his head but forgot to tell him he was a ghost (鬼).

We knocked on the first door and waited. The door flew open, and we all shouted, “Trick-or-treat!” Mrs. Fisher patted Joe’s head through the sheet and said, “What a cute little ghost!”

And Joe yelled (叫喊), “I am not a ghost!”

True story. My grandchildren love it. They beg me to tell it again and again.

I hope to tell them more stories as they grow older. I want them to remember me and the big, crazy family I grew up in. Stories are the unbreakable threads that bind generations together, tell us who we are and give us hope.

My grandchildren have never met their “Great Uncle Joe”, but they won’t soon forget him. To them, he will always be, not a ghost, but very lovable.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要探究颜色与情感之间的联系。

3 . First, all participants found it quite easy to link colors and emotions. This was particularly true for colors like red, black, or yellow. Other colors, like brown and purple, received fewer associations. We found that colour-emotion associations were not one-to-one, but many-to-many.

Participants did not select one emotion for a colour, but often chose several emotions. In turn, different colors were linked to the same emotion, like pleasure, which was associated with red but also yellow, orange, pink and purple.

What you can also see is that most colors were associated with positive emotions. Only brown, grey and black—that is, darker colors—were associated with negative emotions. Red was the most controversial colour. For some, it was a very positive colour—the colour of passion, love and desire. For others, it was a negative colour—the colour of danger, anger and hate. For even others, it was both positive and negative. What connects all these emotions and ideas is the fact that red is activating and strong.

Second, we found few cultural differences. In other words, many colour-emotion associations seemed universal. Most participants agreed that pink was associated with love and pleasure, yellow with joy and amusement, or that black was the saddest colour.

Third, if you are interested in cultural differences, we found some specificities too. For example, in addition to the universal associations of love and anger with red, Chinese participants also associated joy and amusement, while Nigerian participants additionally associated fear with red. Another example is the association between purple and sadness that only Greek participants chose. For others, purple was generally a positive colour with very little agreement on the exact emotions associated with purple.

Fourth, participants whose languages were more similar to each other also had more similar associations. To arrive at this finding, we estimated the degree of linguistic (语言的) similarity between two languages, which shows how related or unrelated they are. And then, languages from different language families, like English and Chinese, would have the lowest similarity scores.

1. Which colour is most likely to cause controversy?
A.Black.B.Red.C.Yellow.D.Brown.
2. What is pink associated with according to most participants?
A.Love and pleasure.B.Joy and amusement.
C.Anger and sadness.D.Fear and disappointment.
3. Which group of people associate purple with sadness?
A.Chinese participants.B.Nigerian participants.
C.Greek participants.D.English participants.
4. What’s the best title of the text?
A.The Deep Meaning of Colours
B.The Link Between Colours and Emotions
C.Cultural Differences in Different Countries
D.Linguistic Similarity Between Two Languages

4 . My mom and my grandpa have been making jam(果酱)every summer for more than 20 years. The jam is sweet ,made from local Okanagan fruit. Not only is it delicious but it also helps me remember my childhood. As kids, we traveled to Salmon Arm, B. C. ,every summer to spend it with my grandpa and grandma. Memories of house-boating, fishing, countless hours in the lake, and of course jam-making remain in all our hearts.

We were never part of making jam, but I remember watching my mom and grandpa carry in fresh berries from the car, and then measure and cook. Only breaking to sleep and eat, they would show up two days later tired, sometimes covered with burns, and proud faces. Although at that time I couldn't tell you how the jam was made, I knew that each jar(瓶)was made with love and care. They never sold the jam at any local markets; they kept some for themselves and the rest was given away to friends and family.

One summer, for some reason, they weren't able to make jam. I remember my mom being really sad and I didn't understand till some years later that making jam with her dad wasn't really about the jam at all. It was an occasion (场合),where she had his undivided attention and he, hers. I don't know what they talked about for all those hours, or if they even talked at all, but any silence was filled with feelings of love and happiness.

Now in my mid-30s, my brother, sister and I have our own children to bring to Salmon Arm every summer, it only for a few days. Much has changed but one thing that has not is the jam. Mom and Grandpa disappear for a couple of days to make it. I feel joy watching my mom and grandpa share this time together. It's a tradition that one day my mom will carry forward with me, and many years from now, I will carry forward with my daughter.

1. What can best describe the author's childhood?
A.Unusual.B.Poor.
C.Troubled.D.Colorful.
2. How did the author feel when she saw her mom being sad?
A.She shared the same feeling.
B.She was unable to understand.
C.She didn't care about it.
D.She felt sorry about it.
3. What might be the point of making jam?
A.Filling the family with joy and love.
B.Making a good living for the family.
C.Bringing happiness to children.
D.Helping the old family members feel less lonely.
4. What decision does the author make?
A.To make jam on her own.
B.To learn her mom's attitude to life.
C.To follow the family tradition.
D.To spend more time with her daughter.

5 . I was sitting at my kitchen table the other day with a pen, notebook, calculator and a pile of bills. I was doing my monthly budget. There were bills for electric water, rent, insurance, the car payment, the phone bill, and the cable bill. Plus money needed to be set aside for food, gas, clothes and hopefully a little left over to save for those unexpected bills that always seemed to show up. When I was done, I shook my head, closed my eyes and thought of a time long ago when I would regularly get treasures.

When I was a boy, we lived across the road from Camp Caesar. It held week long camps all through the summer and my grandma who I lovingly called “Nanny” worked in her big kitchen. I remember slipping there getting a smile, a hug, a kiss and a hot roll from Nanny. Then she would always take deep in her pockets and pull out a treasure, a shiny quarter. She would give it to me and I would run down the hill to either get an ice cold can of coke from the pop machine or I would head to the camp’s swimming pool where I could buy a warm cup of cherry coke for 15 cents and a tiny 10 cent bag of chips from a stand. I took my time because it was always a big decision. It was nice too feeling so rich for a few minutes.

Looking back now I can see that the real treasure was not the quarter at all. It was the love with which Nanny gave it to me. I would have still visited her at work every day if I had never gotten a single quarter. It was her smile, hugs, and kisses that were priceless in my heart then and now.

The old saying is true, “With your work you can make a living, but it is with your love that you make a life.” You can always welcome love into your heart, soul and mind. And you can always share your love with others. It is that one treasure that lasts forever.

1. According to Paragraph 1, what was the author trying to figure out?
A.Where to get treasures.B.What food and supplies to buy.
C.How to sort out these bills at hand.D.How to balance the money available.
2. What does the underlined word “roll” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.A kind of breadB.A kind of act.
C.A sound.D.A greeting.
3. Which of the following best describes Nanny?
A.Considerate.B.Generous.
C.Affectionate.D.Enthusiastic.
4. Why does the author mention the old saying in the last Paragraph?
A.To change people’s heart and soul.
B.To show what we should value in life.
C.To explain work and love can make a life.
D.To advise more love and sharing in childhood.

9 . Why is it that many people who have suffered a major shock, such as divorce or death of a family member, seem to be weaker against a variety of major and minor illness? One common idea among psychologists has been that people could deal with suffering more effectively if they were able to understand and accept it. Indeed, many experts stress the value of expressing thoughts and feelings connected with upsetting events.

Recently, a team of medical researchers studied the links between describing psychologically painful events and long-term health. In one experiment healthy college students were asked to write about either personally disturbing experiences or ordinary topics over a period of four days. In the months afterwards, students who had chosen to show their inner thoughts and feelings in their writing visited the health center for illness much less often than those who had written about everyday topics.

In an experiment that followed, another group of healthy students were given the four-day writing exercises. Some chose to write about highly personal and upsetting experiences (including loneliness, problems with family and friends, and health). When questioned immediately afterwards, they said that they did not feel any better. However, their blood samples(样本) taken before and after the experiment showed evidence of an improved resistance to illness. The white cells that fight off bacteria and viruses had increased their reaction and sensitivity to these invaders”. This trend continued over the following six weeks, when another blood sample was taken. Individuals who showed the best results were those who wrote about topics that they had actively kept from telling others about.

The researchers suggested that failure to face up to painful experience can be a form of stress itself, and can increase the possibility of illness. It follows, then, that actively dealing with a major shock makes possible its understanding and acceptance. The answer is not to suffer in silence. It may not always be possible to talk about personal problems, but writing them down will help the body to fight disease in the long run.

1. In the first experiment, the students who wrote about painful events ________.
A.started to suffer psychological problems
B.enjoyed sharing their inner thought and feelings
C.were less likely to seek treatment for sickness
D.couldn’t deal with suffering effectively
2. People who wrote about personal problems in the second experiment ________.
A.had more bacteria and viruses in their blood
B.had decreased feelings of loneliness
C.showed an improved white cell reaction
D.did better in their writing tasks
3. What does the underlined word "invaders" refer to?
A.The white cells.
B.Bacteria and viruses.
C.Resistance to illness.
D.The reaction and sensitivity of the cells.

A.Suffering and Health
B.Inner Thoughts and Feelings
