It was my tenth birthday—double digits—which would be a big day for me, and I would have the biggest party ever. The guest list, which I kept at the back of my homework assignment folder, began with a few close friends. Nearly every girl in my fifth-grade class had been invited to sleep over at my house for a big celebration. I was especially happy when each guest I invited excitedly accepted the invitation. As you could imagine, my family room was full of crazy shouts and bursts of laughter. We had just finished a game of Twister and were lining up for the limbo (林波舞)when the doorbell rang suddenly. I hardly paid attention to who might be at the door. What did it matter? Who cared? Everyone I liked from school was there, in my family room, preparing for the game —to lean under the stick held by my two sisters.
“Judy, come here for a minute,” Mom answered the door and called loudly from the front door.
I hated to be interrupted. I rolled my eyes and shrugged to my friends as if to say, “Now who would dare bother me at a time like this?” What I really wanted to say was, “It’s tough being popular!”

Without much hesitation, Mr. Maude bought what the service lady recommended, expecting to give his wife a big surprise. What he didn’t expect was that what he finally received from SM was more than a surprise
Days after Mr. Maude placed the order online, he received a parcel from SM when his wife was taking care of the garden. Thinking that he needed to take a look at the real thing before he gave it to his wife, he took the parcel to the bedroom and opened it. Inside the package, there was some wrapping bubble plastic sheets. When Mr.Maude emptied the package, to his surprise, he found not one but two ring boxes. Inside each box, there was a ruby ring. The two rings are only slightly different from each other. “This is obviously not supposed to be a buy-one-get-one-for-free offer. Ruby rings are just too expensive for that. Most probably, this is a mistake of some kind,” Mr. Maude said to himself.

My mother and I dragged in the final section of our seven-foot artificial Christmas tree from the garage. Before setting the tree in its stand, we moved our sofa over so we would have the room needed for our large tree to fit in the living room. In a moment, we would form the branches that would hold our decorations.
Everything was going smoothly, and my sister announced the stand was ready. Mother and I lifted the bottom section of the tree and were about to place it into the stand when I heard a scream. It was so loud that I assumed someone had broken into our home.
“A mouse! A mouse!” screamed my sister. She screamed just as loud, and jumped up on the sofa as the baby mouse ran to one side of our living room and then the other. Because of the loud screams, the mouse was frightened. The little creature had obviously found a home in our Christmas tree. Once we brought the tree inside and opened the branches, the baby mouse fell out of its temporary home and ran across our living room.
“Get the mouse!” my sister screamed.
It was so tiny and quick that I wasn’t sure what to do. I tried grabbing its long gray tail, but it slipped away. Then I ran to our bedroom and came back with an empty shoebox and a fly swatter (蝇拍). My plan was to stun (打晕) the little mouse and put it in the box.
I was about to hit it with the swatter when my sister shouted out, “Don’t kill it! It’s a baby and kind of cute.” My mother agreed with her, and I could tell by its frightened eyes that the little mouse did, too.

This was an excellent chance to get one parent on my side. “That’s not fair to you, Dad. You’ll be too tired to have fun after driving so much.” I crossed my fingers. “Then you’ll have to drive all the way home too! Being on a plane would be very relaxing for you because you won’t be driving so much.”
My father smiled and patted my back. “Thanks for being so concerned, but I’ll be fine. No need to worry.” Then he looked at my mother and winked.
Parents can be so frustrating. Didn’t they get it? I’m in desperate need of a plane ride, and I need something cool to talk about with my friends when we get home. I lost control. “Sitting in the back seat of the car sucks,” I blurted out, then rapidly covered my mouth with a hand to prevent any other forbidden words from escaping.
“Jay!” My mother shouted. “Watch your mouth!”
“I don’t want to hear that type of language again,” my father said, slapping the table angrily.
“Ok, sorry, but I really wanted to go by plane.”
“This conversation’s over.” My father said. “If you have finished eating, go to your room.”
On Saturday morning, We loaded all our luggage into the car.

Birthdays are typically the occasions for delight and feasting. Family and friends get together on the occasion and convey their regards with the beautiful presents they bring with themselves. I am personally a big fan of birthdays and wait for my birthday approximately a month prior to the day.
This year, my birthday came off on last Monday. I didn’t know that my parents had arranged a special party for me. At eight o'clock in the evening of my lucky birthday, I was alone at home complaining and frowning, and pitying myself for my misfortune. I thought it was going to be a special day filled with presents and fun, but all I received was a “Happy Birthday”.
All of a sudden, the electricity was cut off and there was a complete darkness in the house. I couldn’t do anything. Therefore, I decided to go to sleep and end this unlucky day.
Out of the blue in that quiet night, I heard a sudden noise coming from downstairs. Startled and terribly shocked, I suspected that someone broke into the house. Immediately, I tried to phone my parents, but no one answered.
After a couple of minutes of fear, I started to calm down. Although in the meantime I heard more noises of people talking, I summoned up some courage and started heading for the basement. As I slowly drew closer to the basement, I guessed there were more than one person, but I found it hard to believe. There couldn’t be a lot of people in our basement!
Courageously, I opened the door of the basement. There was a complete darkness. There wasn’t a single noise. However, as I approached, I heard some laughter and confirmed that there were people. Suddenly, the lights were on and there stood my parents and friends cheering at me with the beautiful presents they had carefully prepared for me. It was a surprise party! The room was beautifully decorated with colorful balloons. Tables and chairs were laid and covered with white and contrasting red sheets. A gigantic birthday cake was positioned on the innermost table.

Having set a pretty table, Mama looked up, smiling. “Help me carry in the food,” she said. Slim, who had come out of his room by this time, went racing into the kitchen. " I'll get it! I'll get it!” The rest of us piled in behind him, everyone grabbing a dish. Then we watched Dad carry in the biggest, brownest, best-smelling turkey we had ever seen with Mama's hand under the plate, just in case. Together they lowered the turkey to its place at the table.
It was the tradition in our family to think of something for which we were most thankful. We all ran to the table yelling something like “I'm thankful for school being out” or “I'm thankful for pecan pie!” All eyes were on that enormous turkey as we took our seats.
Yes, everything was perfect except for one thing. On that special day, it was Dad who sat at the head of the table and carved the turkey. It was an honor that he had eagerly expected for days. Mama always called Dad a clumsy ox. He frequently tripped (绊倒) over his own two feet, and he could drop just about anything.
We automatically eased back when Dad tested the electric carving knife in the air. Dad went to work on the white meat first with surprisingly few problems. Slice after slice landed neatly on the plate with thick gravy (肉汁)。Dad leaned forward and grabbed the end of the left turkey leg and cut it off, placing it whole on the plate. His oily fingers shone brightly in the light of the chandelier (大吊灯)，and Mama waved her napkin. “I'm all right, Mama,” he said. “I'm all right. ”
