Natural perfume or artificial perfume?

The use of perfume dates back to earliest times. The ancient Egyptians perfumed the bricks used to build their houses and temples, and wore perfumed fat in their hair.

These days, consumer demand for perfumed products is intense. In the home, from washing-up liquid to paper tissues, soap to shoe polish, fragrance is the common ingredient. Artificial leather is perfumed to make it smell like the real thing, and in Japan, some companies spray perfume through building’s air-conditioning system at key times of the working day.

To meet the demands of the perfume industry, scientific developments have made the companies use substitutes for some natural ingredients. Scientists have also discovered that natural and artificial materials are highly complementary and are acceptable to the consumer. Even the most expensive perfumes are in fact compounds of both natural and artificial ingredients. The French perfume manufacturers were among the first to blend artificial compound when they made the famous perfume Chanel No. 5 in 1923.

Producing natural oils is very expensive. For example, 1000 kilos of jasmine flowers make just one kilo of extract. Using artificial fragrance has reduced the costs of manufacture overall, although the chemical operations involved can be very time-consuming and costly-sixteen or seventeen chemical separations may be needed to produce the right result.

Nevertheless, the use of complex chemical to reproduce fragrance is likely to increase, as the artificial ingredients as well as natural oils gives perfume manufacturers more control over the production process, which is why many classic perfumes owe their characteristic top notes to fruits of science not nature.

5 . Directions: Write the summary of the passage in no more than 130 words and the original sentences in the passage are not all owed to use.

It has been found that fewer than one shopper in five makes a complete shopping list before going to the store. The reason for this is that seven out of ten of today’s purchases are decided in stores where shoppers tend towards impulse buying. Buying groceries on impulse has risen for the past forty years, and this rise has coincided with the growth of self-service shopping. However, in grocery stores where clerks wait on customers, there is much less impulse buying. It is hard for people to buy on impulse if they have to address a clerk.

Psychologists have joined forces with merchandising experts. It is their job to persuade people to buy products which they may not need or even want until they see them attractively presented. It was discovered by the psychologists that shoppers want help with their purchases. Having so many choices confuses them, but they are affected most by attractive package designs. Attraction also depends a lot on the products position on the shelf, however, and persuading shoppers to buy is easier when the product is located at eye-level.

All the housewives who went to the new supermarket had one great ambition: to be the lucky customer who did not have to pay for her shopping. For this was what the notice just inside the entrance promised. It said: “Remember, once a week, one of our customers gets free goods. This may be your lucky day.”

For several weeks Mrs. Emerson hoped, like many of her friends, to be the lucky customer. Unlike her friends, she never gave up hope. Her kitchen were full of things which she did not need. Her husband tried to dissuade(劝阻) her but failed. She dreamed of the day when the manager of the supermarket would approach her and say, “Madam, this is your lucky day. Everything in your basket is free.”

One morning, after she had finished her shopping and had taken it to her car she found that she forgot to buy any tea. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Two years ago, Li Yuhua’s daughter taught her how to shop online. Since then, the 51-year-old farmer in Wushan has been a regular online shopper. Shoppers like Li Yuhua are the new target for China’s e-commerce giants, including Alibaba Group, which operates the Taobao platform, and JD. com. Rural China added 3 million more Internet users in the first half the year, bringing the total number to 225 million, or 26. 3% of the country’s total Internet population of 854 million, according to a report on rural e-commerce development released last week by the China International Electronic Commerce Network. That helped improve rural online sales in the first half of the year by 21 % to $109. 6 billion, outpacing the national growth rate by 3.2 percentage points.

“However, it is a little bit early to say that China’s e-commerce battlefield is moving to rural China,” said Chen Tao, a senior analyst. Unlike urban residents, most rural Chinese haven’t experienced e-commerce shopping. While that provides online platforms with one of the least undeveloped markets for e-commerce, progress has been slow due to the lack of infrastructure(基础设施)and logistics(物流)support.

To address that problem, one of China’s largest e-commerce operators, JD. com hired more deliverymen and tested drone(无人机)delivery services to improve service in rural China. Alibaba Group, China’s largest e-commerce player, announced in April last year that it had invested $717 million in Huitongda Network Co. Ltd, which helps to boost sales in 15,000 towns across 18 provinces.

Another inhibiting factor in the development of rural e-commerce is the income gap. In 2018, annual per capita disposable income(人均可支配收入)in rural areas was 14,600 yuan compared with 39,300 yuan in cities. “Lower disposable incomes in rural areas limit the consumption,” said analyst Chen. It also takes time to educate rural residents to accept e-commerce services as most of them are new to online shopping. There is still a long way to go to popularise online shopping in rural China.’’

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇光整的短文。

As we get older there are certain gifts standing out in our memories for a variety of reasons.

One gift I was given and treasured most was a doll named Patsy. She wasn’t originally mine but was my younger sister’s Christmas gift, but on holding Patsy I immediately fell in love with her and couldn’t bear to part with het. Luckily, my sister was quite happy to exchange dolls. From then on Patsy was my baby and I continued to love her dearly and would have died for her.

Another gift I offered my Mom has been shining in my mind. On a Saturday, I was on my way to the local cinema when I happened to glimpse(一瞥) at the window of the gift shop at the corner of our street. There were lovely gloves, pretty flowered handkerchiefs, and rose patterned teacups and saucers, all in pretty boxes. Seeing all these lovely gifts reminded me that it would soon be Mother’s Day and my mother’s birthday. Wouldn’t it be nice, I thought, if I could give my mother something really special, something I’d bought myself? So I stepped inside the shop and admired a dressing table set, which was a green cut glass with ornamental tray(装饰托盘) and several matching pieces. I was sure my mother would love it.

The lady must have seen my disappointment when she told me the price. But she had a suggestion which immediately lifted my spirits. She pulled out a large notebook and wrote my name in it and the gift I wanted to buy, and in return I paid her a penny from my pocket money. It meant no sweets that day but I didn’t care. At the age of nine, I’d made my very first lay-by(分期付款)…and felt like a grown up. From then on, every Saturday I dropped in at the shop on schedule and paid a penny, which the lady dutifully recorded in her notebook.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

The day before Mother’s Day I paid the last two pence.

10 . 阅读下面短文,根据内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

College students need textbooks to help them learn and earn an academic degree. However, on top of tuition, room and board and meals, why are textbooks so expensive? Textbooks cover many areas of knowledge. They are prepared specifically with a lot of information that include many original pictures, special charts, and specific data. Textbooks are extremely useful to students for learning and profitable for the companies that publish them. While textbooks can be a financial burden on the student, they can be profitable for a book scouter (侦察员).

A book scouter is an opportunist who buys cheap used books at thrift stores (二手店) or book sales, and sells them for more money. Brand new textbooks are the most desired of books for scouters since they typically cost over $100. Of course, used textbooks don’t cost as much. But when the scouter goes to a thrift store and book sales at libraries, textbooks can cost as little as several dollars. So, buying used textbooks that are new is one of the most profitable books that sellers can buy.

Unfortunately, many college textbook editions change every year, which eliminates (消除) the student’s chance to use last year’s edition. So, they will have to pay more money for brand new textbooks. The sad reality is that very few changes are generally made between editions.

Book scouters search for textbooks as well as other categories of books available at local thrift stores or book sales. Textbooks that are new or relatively new are marked down to just a few dollars. Then they can be sold on Amazon for potentially high profits. Amazon buys new textbooks for a lot more money than most other types of books. If you want to try scouting textbooks to make a profit, buy their newest editions or the ones ahead of them. Buy it in the best condition possible. If you live in a town or city where there is a university, you have a better chance of finding good textbooks.

Although textbooks can be expensive for the average student, he or she could potentially sell them on Amazon for the same price that they were purchased. Just remember, knowledge is power and can be profitable too.
