The French author Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin once     1    , “Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are.” Put more     2    , this means “You are     3     you eat.” Most people today     4     this saying to healthy eating. However, Brillat-Savarin was actually referring     5     our personality, character, and culture.

No matter how exciting space exploration sounds, there’s an important point that needs to be considered: food supplies. Right now, astronauts typically       1     (依赖) dry food in airtight bags and cans, since there are strict weight limits on items taken into space. Foods that we     2     (认为是理所当然的), such as fresh fruit and vegetables, are out of the question for space explorers.

For those who     3     (有强烈的愿望) to grow food during space flights, they’ve faced many difficulties, including the absence of gravity, and a lack of soil, air and humidity (湿度). However, growing food to add and minimize the food that must be carried to space will be increasingly important on long-duration flights into space. Recently, a leading team has worked out how plants can absorb nutrients from human urine (尿). Human urine is 95 percent water, with the other 5 percent    4     (构成；组成) nutrients which are harmful to the human body but not to plants, and it could supply three to four out of the six nutrients that plants need. By recycling liquid waste and producing food, an efficient cycle will be created.

And most importantly, the duration of space flights will be greatly extended to “20 years of flight”, meaning we may be soon sending astronauts on flights to Mars, or even beyond.

Our comfort foods are highly     1    . They vary from person to person, depending on our own unique experiences that have     2     our lives. If we grow up eating certain foods in our family, then those foods tend to be linked with positive     3    . For example, we often connect chicken soup with a happy childhood and its     4     becomes tied up with the feeling of being taken care of. When we eat it again, we     5     memories of a time when we were loved and looked after, and this cheers us up.

The c    1     of spicy, salty, sweet and sour flavors makes Gong Bao Chicken hard to     2     (抗拒). What’s more, it’s easy to make and can be     3     (适应) to individual tastes. So, don’t forget to pick up some chicken on your way home and try this     4    (菜谱) out.

I’m here in Sydney! Certainly, in many ways this seems to be t    4    . Chinese cuisine is a case in point. P     5     to coming to China, my only experience with Chinese cooking was in America, with Chinese food that had been changed to suit American t     6    . For example, America’s most popular Chinese dish is General Tso’s chicken, which consists of fried chicken covered in a sweet sauce, flavoured with hot red p    7    . This is probably not an authentic Chinese r     8    , however, so it cannot tell us much about the Chinese. On the other hand, it does tell us a lot about Americans. It tells us, for example, that Americans love bold, simple flavours. And, since the dish was also i     9     recently, it tells us that Americans are not a     10     to try new foods.

    1     (有安慰的食物) may mean to increase the waistline but it is good for the soul. A study found that it can stop loneliness     2    (仅仅想一想) mashed potato, chicken soup or chocolate pudding. It is thought that we     3    (应该选择) certain foods when the going gets tough because they remind us of happier times, including childhood meals and family holidays.

At a     1    , the kinds of food local people     2     tell us what they grow in their region, what kinds of lives they lead, and what they like and do not like. Could we also say, for example, that those who like bold    3     are bold themselves? Or, that those who like     4     food tend to have a hot temper? Maybe. Maybe not. What we can say, however, is that culture and     5     go hand in hand, and if you do not experience one, you can never really know the other.

For hundreds of years,     1     after reindeer was a way of life for the Sami. They used the reindeer’s meat     2     food, their bones for tools and their skin for making clothes and tents. Since reindeer     3     always on the move, the Sami would pick up their tents     4     accompany them. Today,     5     Sami have houses in villages near Sarek and live a modern life just like their neighbours. But every spring,     6     small number of Sami still follow their reindeer into the valleys of Sarek, living in tents or old cottages and enjoying their traditions. I am not a Sami, but in Sarek I have     7     some of their habits. For example, this morning my breakfast is flat bread     8     over a fire, dried reindeer meat, and some sweet and     9     berries     10     I found growing near my tent.

The stores in the Chinatown offer     1     souvenirs, goods, and clothing. All kinds of     2     can be found, too, and there are Chinese tea stores, where visitors can taste and buy     3     Chinese tea.

But perhaps what many tourists and San Franciscans     4     about Chinatown is its food. There is Chinese food to     5     with traditional dishes from all over China.
