3 . Our mother has to leave home every day before we go to school. She has to walk twelve blocks to take the bus to work. We think it’s terrible that there is no bus that comes closer to our street.
I said to my mother, “This is a public transportation system. It is our system. It should come closer to our home. I do not want you to walk that far to get to the bus.” She agreed, but she said it would take more than one family to get the bus line to change. I told my mother I would ask my teacher about it. We could do a study and maybe start a petition (请愿书).
My teacher liked the idea. He said we could do the survey. So our class surveyed all our parents. We collected our survey data and made a table. We found that 90% of all the parents would use the bus more if it was easier to get to. We also found that only 20% of the parents could get to it easily, just by walking five blocks. For all the others, it took between 6 and 12 blocks.
We made a map to show how the bus route (路线) could be changed to reach people in our community more easily. Then my teacher called the alderman (市议员) to see if we could meet to talk about our study.
The alderman was impressed. She said we had done a really good job of thinking out the problem and a solution. She promised she would talk with the head of the transportation system about it.
Now my mother can leave later, and she only has to walk four blocks to get to the bus. When she leaves in the morning, she always says, “Son, I’m so glad you got the bus route changed.”

5 . As in other countries, road safety is always a concern in America. Studies show that in 2022, 7,485 pedestrians (行人) were killed by vehicles in the U.S. That’s an increase of more than 65% since 2012. Even during COVID-19, when fewer people were driving, more pedestrians were hit and more died.
Researchers found that drivers took advantage of empty streets and pay little attention to traffic rules. Another factor is the increasing popularity of SUVs, pickups (皮卡) and vans. These kinds of vehicles are up to three times more dangerous than smaller cars when hit pedestrians. The more fault drivers believe they could bear for the hitting, the more likely they are to leave without giving any help. Younger male drivers are more likely to run away. So are those who get drunken or lack a driving license. Other factors include the age of the victim, as children and elderly people are less likely to be left alone. Also, with more witnesses around, the drivers are less likely to hit and run.
In the U.S. drivers run away from serious crashes with pedestrians about 20% of the time, and the rate is very different among different states.
In 2020, 6,519 pedestrians were killed in the U.S. Speeding driving were a major cause. While Florida “wins” the least number of deaths caused by speeding. These following states were reported to have the most dangerous road accidents.

With more bikes than people, the city is structured with cyclists in mind. Low-speed limits in the centre limit the impact of cars, while bike racks on public transport make it easy to travel long distances, Rental shops are everywhere. The terrain (地热) is famously flat, and an online bike route planner makes it easy.

10 . Paris, France is known as the city of love. Now, the city hopes to also be known as the most bike-friendly city in Europe. That’s because Paris is planning to improve its infrastructure (基础设施) to become a safe cycling place by 2026.
This is a major change from a city that was once considered harmful for bicycle riders. Now, city leaders are hoping for a 100 percent turn around. Today, over 1 million Parisians are traveling by bike daily without the proper infrastructure, using lanes (车道) shared by cars and motorcycles. This will all soon change.
Some of these measures are already in place. As part of the 2021-2016 cycling plarcalled Velo Act 2, bicycle parking will be increased at the same time car parking spaces are reduced. The city has already removed 70 percent of its on-street automobile spots. There will be 40,000 secure bike spaces installed near railroad stations funded by the city and an additional 50,000 will be built. Paris already has 1,000 km of safe bike paths including 52 km that were added during the coronavirus pandemic (新冠疫情) when people were hesitant to use public transportation. There are now plans to add an additional 130 km of paths to encourage people to cycle. The aim of Velo Act 2 is to allow people to cycle from one end of Paris to another.
“This cycling plan is one of the essential parts of ecological and social transformation that we are leading in Paris,” said David Belliard.
