European Transport Systems

It is difficult to conceive of vigorous economic growth without an efficient transport system. Although modern information technologies can reduce the demand for physical transport by    1    teleworking and teleservices, the requirement for transport continues to increase. For passenger transport, the    2    factor is the spectacular growth in car use. The number of cars on European Union(EU)roads saw an increase of three million cars each year from 1990 to 2010, and in the next years the EU will see a further    3    increase in its fleet.

As far as goods transport is concerned, growth is due to a large extent to changes in the European economy and its system of production. In the last 20 years, as internal frontiers have been    4    , the EU has moved from a “stock” economy to a “flow“ economy.   This phenomenon has been emphasised by the    5    of some industries, particularly those which are labour intensive, to reduce production costs, even though the production site is hundreds or even thousands of kilometres away from the final assembly plant or away from users.

The strong economic growth expected in countries which are candidates for    6    to the EU will also increase transport flows, in particular road haulage traffic. In 1998, some of these countries already    7    more than twice their 1990 volumes and imported more than five times their 1990 volumes. And although many candidate countries    8    a transport system which encourages rail, the distribution between modes has tipped sharply in favour of road transport since the 1990s.

However, a new imperative—sustainable development—offers an opportunity for adapting the EU’s common transport policy. This objective, agreed by the Gothenburg European Council, has to be achieved by integrating environmental considerations into Community policies, and    9    the balance between modes of transport lies at the heart of its strategy. The ambitious objective can only be fully achieved by 2020, but proposed measures are nonetheless a first essential step towards a sustainable transport system which will    10    be in place in 30 years’ time.

Firstly, great changes have been taken place to the transportation inside the city, which makes it convenient for citizens to get around. Some narrowly streets have been broadened, but there are less traffic jams. Secondly, transportation to other cities had also improved. Several highways are now on construction. Two high-speed railways connected our city to the national high-speed railway web is close to completion. At that time, the travel time to Beijing will be reduced to three hour. What deserves to be mentioned is that a airport has been in use for several years, making your city more and more popular.

10 . From quiet paths by a stream in a forest to busy roads running through a city, people have created various forms of routes in different places. These now exist all around us, and their use is imperative for societies. These routes have enabled people to move, transport things, and send information from one place to another quickly and safely. Throughout history, they have been important in our daily lives.

Early routes were often formed naturally on land. They gradually developed over long periods of time while people traveled them on foot or horseback. A significant turning point in their history arrived when the first wheeled carts appeared in ancient times. Once this happened, people recognized the importance of well-maintained routes. Therefore, towns, cities, and entire countries improved them. As a result, life became more convenient, communities grew, economies evolved, and cultures expanded.

People have established routes on water, too. Rivers and canals have served as effective routes for people to move around and carry things. For instance, in the old, Japanese city of Edo, water routes were used for the transportation of agricultural products, seafood, and wood. People have also opened routes across the sea. The seaways were critical for the navigation of ships, particularly in the days when they moved mainly by wind power. Using these sea routes, people could travel great distances, and go to places they had not previously been able to reach.

People have gone on to open routes in the sky as well. Since the invention of the airplane, they have made it possible to travel long distances easily. Eventually, people became able to travel safely and comfortably high in the sky, and going vast distances only took a small amount of time.

Today, we have a new type of route, the Internet. By using this worldwide route, people can easily obtain information that once was available mainly from books and face-to-face communication. They can also instantly send messages to large numbers of people all at once.

As long as there have been people, there have been routes to connect them. Currently unknown routes will surely take us even further in the future.
